ITUP certification ceremonyA befitting celebration for Western Cape informal traders who participated in ITUPIt was a jubilant moment at the Zolane Community Centre in Nyanga, Cape Town on 9 February as 116 Informal Tradersreceived certificates for completing training programmes through the Informal Traders Upliftment Project (ITUP). ITUP is a joint project between the W&RSETA and Department of Small Business Development (The dsbd) which was launched in 2014 as part of the multimillion rand strategy on informal businesses, the National Business Upliftment Strategy (NIBUS).DHET Minister, Dr Blade Nzimande, W&RSETA Acting The objective of ITUP was to capacitate 1000 informal tradersCEO, Mr Andile Sipengane, The (dsbd) Director -General, nationally to increase their profitability and sustainabilityMs Edith Vries with a group of Informal Traders at the through skills development. The project also aimed at increasing the competitiveness of the businesses and certification ceremony infrastructure improvements of the informal traders. 992 informal traders have completed the programme from the pilot project.Informal traders received training from various TVET colleges across the province and the modules included introduction toentrepreneurship; advertising and promotion; customer care and service; basic financial management; purchasing skills; legalissues and compliance, amongst others.The beneficiaries were also provided with equipment as part of the infrastructural support to the traders.In his opening address, our Acting CEO, Mr Andile Sipengane pointed out thatITUP is a very unique programme because not only it provides coaching andmentoring but it also provide infrastructure to Informal Traders.Two beneficiaries shared their testimonies with the guests on how the project hadtransformed their businesses. This was all the proof that was needed to confirmthat the project has indeed making a difference in the lives of our fellow citizens.Speaking at the event, Minister of Small Business Development, Ms. LindiweZulu was overly excited about the milestones that ITUP had made towards smallbusiness development which was one of the Government’s key priorities.Issue 06 |February | 2016 Acting CEO, Mr AndileSipengane 2

“The ITUP is the best thing that has ever happened to small businesses. Government must ensure a conducive environment for small traders to operate in order to change the face of small businesses and grow the economy. It will be pleasing to see informal businesses transforming to a point where they are able to create more jobs in future,” said Minister Zulu. The Minister of Small Business Developement, Ms Lindiwe Zulu, DHET Minister Dr Blade Nzimande, W&RSETA Acting CEO Mr Andile Sipengane with one of the beneficiariesThe Minister of Higher Education and Training, Dr Blade Nzimande spoke like a proud father and commended the TVETcolleges for heeding to the call to open the doors of leaning for all by partnering with the SETA to provide the training.Guests at the event The Minister also took the opportunity to announce the imple- mentation of ITUP II. “I am very pleased that the project was extended to rural communities because more often we focus on urban communities and neglect those who are really in need of assistance. I am proud to announce that both the W&RSETA and The dsbd have set aside R10 million for ITUP phase II which will assist another 1000 informal traders across the country. I look forward to a few years from now on when the investment will be increased to reach more beneficiaries said Dr Nzimande. Well, the challenge is on, SME Department! The bar has been raised and the expectations are high. We have no doubt that you will exceed the expectations. The last two certification ceremonies will be held on 20 February in Gauteng and 11 March 2016 in Northern Cape.Issue 06 |February | 2016 3

SMME RoadshowsSME Department embarks on National RoadshowsThe Small and Micro Enterprises (SMME) Department has embarked on national stakeholder roadshows which are aimed atpromoting different opportunities for small business development and to engage with the various role players on addressingSMME development within the Sector. The roadshows started in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu Natal on 3 February 2016, followedby Umtata, Eastern Cape on 5 February.Some of the partners that have come on board for this initiative include the Small Enterprise Development Agency (SEDA),National Youth Development Agency (NYDA), South African Revenue Services (SARS), Companies Intellectual PropertyCorporation (CIPC) and the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF).In Pietermaritzburg, the roadshow was attended by 164 stakeholders with 90% being youth business owners. The Office of thePremier and local Mayor’s Office also landed their support.142 stakeholders attended the Eastern Cape roadshow. About 80% of the attendees were women business owners. In additionto the partners that have come on board, the Department of Local Economic Development was also represented.A total of 10 Sessions will be convened and the roadshows will conclude on 29 February 2016 in Soshanguve, Gauteng.Umtata roadshowIssue 06 |February | 2016 Pietermaritzburg roadshow 4

PMO WorkshopPMO conducts capacity building workshopProject management is undoubtedly an important aspect of the operation of the SETA whose delivery is predominantly throughproject implementation.The SETA has also faced various challenges in the aspect, which resulted in audit findings in recent years.To address these challenges and to inculcate a culture ofsound project management within the Organisations, theProject Management Office conducted a two-day workshopfor staff members who are involved in project management.The session was held on 3-4 February at Premier Hotel ORTambo in Johannesburg.The session was officially opened by the Executive Managerin the CEO’s office, Advocate Daniel Rampai who welcomedand thanked the colleagues for taking their time off theirschedules particularly at this critical time of the year to prioritiseaddressing one of the SETA’s main challenges.The workshop focussed on capacitating staff on key project Staff members during the workshopmanagement principles and the processes and proceduresrelated to the implementation of projects within theOrganisation.The workshop also provided an opportunity for robust Human Resource Department also took the opportunity todiscussions on the various challenges around project gather on-spot perception from employee on three topicsmanagement in the SETA.
