Part Three: Personal Perspectives on CULI’s 40 Anniversary th
PERSONAL PERSPECTIVES CULI’s 40 th Anniversary On the occasion of the fortieth anniversary of CULI, I am delighted to share my memorable experiences as a longtime member of the teaching staff. During the past four decades, I have seen CULI develop into a powerhouse in ELT, a teaching institution consisting of staff of high calibre, devotion and strong commitment to English language education. All members have worked collaboratively and laboriously towards a common goal: producing effective English language communicators. Given its expanded mission, I have also seen CULI make steady progress to achieve excellence not only in teaching, but assessment, research and services to society in general. To me, CULI is a vibrant learning community in which staff, old and new, are here to share and learn from each other. I am proud to be part of this institute, having witnessed its ever-increasing growth. Therefore, on this auspicious occasion, I wish CULI greater achievements and success in the promotion of English in the future. Supanee Chinnawongs Full-time instructor (1980-present)
To me, CULI is like my second home. Through the 26 years since becoming a member of this prestigious institution, I have been granted many hard-to-come-by opportunities – the opportunity to do what I love CULI’s 40 th Anniversary for a living, the opportunity to grow academically and professionally, and, most importantly, the opportunity to pay back Chulalongkorn University and the community for the privilege of being a member of the university faculty. I am immensely grateful for the richness of intellectual culture that CULI has kindly provided me. On this auspicious occasion, I sincerely hope CULI will maintain its role as a source of academic excellence in English language instruction and testing and evaluation to help contribute to Chulalongkorn University’s vision to be a fount of knowledge and reference and a guiding light for the sustainable progress of the country. I would like to express my congratulations on CULI’s past achievements and best wishes for continued success for years and years to come! Punchalee Wasanasomsithi Full-time instructor (1991-present) I joined CULI as a part-time instructor thirteen years ago in 2004 and then as a full-time instructor in 2005. I’ve since grown from an inexperienced English teacher to a more knowledgeable one thanks to those around me. Not only are the fellow teachers and supporting staff at CULI individuals of high caliber, they are also nice enough to lend me a hand whenever I’m in need of help. Most notable are the kind-hearted people I’ve met who have always been there to support me through both good times and bad. Without CULI, I wouldn’t have met those great people. Without them, I wouldn’t have become the teacher I am today. And by that I’m touched and to them I will be forever grateful. I hope CULI will remain a place where great minds produce new generations of great minds for years to come. Rananda Rungnaphawet Full-time instructor (2005-present)
Working at CULI has provided me with tremendous opportunities to be engaged in a variety of challenging administrative tasks and extra-curricular activities, apart from teaching English. My strong impression about CULI is the coworkers – both teaching and support staff – and their unstinting goodwill and support for one another. There is always someone for everyone to turn to on a bad day. It is a friendly and pleasant work CULI’s 40 th Anniversary environment. At CULI, I have developed both hard and soft skills – lead- ership, teamwork, and problem solving abilities to name a few. As for the teaching part, I am fortunate to have a chance to meet different groups of students in various fields of study every semester. I could not have asked for a better career than being an instructor here. Rawiwan Buppanhasamai Full-time instructor (2005-present) To talk about what the Chulalongkorn University Language Institute means to me, I would start by looking at what it hopes to accomplish. The major goals of CULI are to encourage sharing, growth, and development – not only of language skills and knowledge, but of people as a whole, for, after all, as author Melinda Marchetta noted, “without our language, we have lost ourselves. Who are we without our words?” These important objectives are set not only for the students whom we teach, but for those of us who work here as well. Being a part of CULI has shown me that every day is a wonderful opportunity, as well as a call to arms, to fulfill these goals. Onuma Lakarnchua Full-time instructor (2007-present)
I have been part of CULI since 1999, and it has been a wonderful 18 year-experience working here. Over the years I have been involved in various kinds of duties and that is how I know how professional and CULI’s 40 th Anniversary hardworking CULI faculty members and staff are, while at the same time being caring and supportive. At CULI we work hard and we are very good at multitasking as our work always presents new challenges. Many things have changed since the day I started working here and there will always be more changes to come, but one thing that remains the same is that we all will continue to work hard and know that our achievements depend on our cooperation and teamwork. Chatraporn Piamsai Full-time instructor (1999-present) My life at CULI started 8 years ago on the 1st of May, Labor Day in Thailand. So many colleagues mocked jokingly that I must be working very hard for sure. And yes, it is true. I do. We all do! But it’s not in an onerous way at all. CULI’s staff includes many intelligent, collegial and caring people and that’s what’s good about it as there are many people I can learn from. Turning 40 this year, CULI has experienced its ups and downs. For me, if CULI were a person, it would be a kind-hearted parent who lets me try things on my own while watching my back, who tells me constructively when I’m wrong, and offers opportunities for me to reach the world through the medium of English. On this occasion, I would like to thank and wish CULI the very best ahead and hope that we all continue to keep it moving forward as we have always done. Karuna Naphon Full-time instructor (2009-present)
Having worked here for almost two years, I would say that I am very fortunate to be a member of CULI and grateful for all the great opportunities CULI has offered to me. I have learned and experienced a number of wonderful things I would not have been able to if I had not joined this organization. Effective teamwork, academic excellence, and integrity are some of the values that I have come to appreciate and hold CULI’s 40 th Anniversary dear since I started working here. Most recently, I was sponsored by CULI to attend the 52 RELC International Conference from March 13-15, nd 2017 in Singapore, where I had an opportunity to explore new research trends and teaching perspectives which I can apply to my teaching and research. On the very special occasion of CULI’s 40 anniversary, I would th like to extend my most sincere congratulations to every CULI lecturer and staff member who has tirelessly and diligently contributed to the success of Chulalongkorn University Language Institute. Seehhazzakd Rojanaapichatsakul Full-time instructor (2016-present) When I first heard of CULI, I was not quite certain of what to expect. I had heard people speak positively of Chulalongkorn University whenever I had been in Thailand. However, I was unsure as to how things would compare with universities and teaching philosophies in Australia. After a few months at CULI, things started to become clearer. After a year, I realised how extensive the range of courses offered was and how talented the group of teachers on staff. Most striking was the diversity of the courses, from English for medical and law students, through to those specifically for pharmacy, architecture and business. It is a testimony to the professionalism and skill of all CULI’s teachers that such a curriculum is not only designed and delivered, but done so very well. Having now been at CULI for several years, I am happy to say that the same high educational standards I knew in Australia exist here. Marc Darlington International instructor (2012-present)
Coming to CULI from having worked at Wall Street -Thailand was a pretty big change for me. I went directly from teaching small groups of office workers at Wall Street’s corporate centers to teaching large groups CULI’s 40 th Anniversary of young adults here at Chula. It was a transition that took a little getting used to but I soon came to appreciate both the challenges and rewards that teaching at university offers. I feel fortunate to have the opportunity to teach English in such a wide range of contexts and to students of various majors. I also appreciate the support I’ve received from coworkers at CULI. Whenever I’ve had questions, staff, both teaching and support, have always taken time out of their busy day to assist. Such support and the overall experience of teaching at Chulalongkorn University has helped keep the experience fresh for me – so much so that it’s hard to believe that I’ve now been working here for 10 years. Richard Lemarie International instructor (2007-present) Teaching is accompanied by learning and at the Chulalongkorn University Language Institute, we are involved in a variety of faculties that present us with challenges. Those I have encountered are mitigated by the incredible people I work with thanks to the spirit of teamwork and shared goals of inspiring and motivating students. Working with both Thai and International teachers not only makes our responsibilities manageable but opens doors to new learning opportunities. When I joined CULI, one of the challenges we faced was the students’ reluctance to engage in conversation in English. The Self Access Learning Center is a testimony to how collaboration and dedication among CULI teachers and staff can lead to change. Starting with “Conversation Hour”, the number of activities and the amount of student participation increased. After a couple of years, some who had participated returned to say “thank you”, having been accepted to study abroad with language skills and confidence improved. This is just one of the rewards of teaching at CULI. Zeny Ehrlich International instructor (2009-April 2017)
Congratulations to the Chulalongkorn University Language Institute (CULI) on its 40 anniversary. I joined CULI in 1981 when CULI was one of th the first university-based English language institutes. Since then, CULI has pioneered English language teaching. The institute also plays a seminal role in professional development of teachers throughout Thailand. CULI was instrumental in establishing Thailand TESOL, Thailand’s only CULI’s 40 th Anniversary association for English language teaching professionals. Professor Toemsakdi Krishnamra, then Director of CULI, was the association’s first President. At CULI’s annual conferences, teachers learn about global trends in English language instruction. CULI has received numerous grants from the Office of the Higher Education Commission and Regional English Language Office of the US to support local/regional projects, including symposia/seminars with leading universities and the Lower Mekong Initiative English project. I wholeheartedly congratulate CULI for its contributions to English language education. I urge the Institute to continue along this bright path. Developing workforce English competency will be key to Thailand’s ability to increase global competitiveness. Suchada Nimmannit Retired instructor Director of Rangsit English Language Institute, Rangsit University A melting pot of enthusiastic, competent and intelligent people A place of opportunities, challenges and changes The pioneer of the Kingdom in ELT This is CULI in my eyes. With different attitudes and visions, but united in our goals, CULI has marched forward. During my 30 years, I watched friends and colleagues become leaders in ELT, bringing fame to our institute, university and, of course, Thailand. We can proudly say we have pioneered Thailand’s English language teaching, be it in courses in English for Specific Purposes or the CU-TEP and CU-AAT examinations. CULI continues to develop teaching methodologies for grammar, translation, and task-based online
learning, teacher training and many more. CULI also allowed me to pursue my passion for English debate, Asian and British Parliamentary Formats. I have been able to found Chulalongkorn University Debate CULI’s 40 th Anniversary Society, teaching Thai teachers and students how to “replace weapons with words, logic and love,” and for this, I am grateful. Piyanart Faktorngpan Retired instructor Former Deputy Director for International Affairs Expert to National Commission on Human Rights on The Rights of Children and Education I would like to express my heartfelt congratulations to the Chulalongkorn University Language Institute (CULI) on the 40 anniversary. As a former th faculty member who worked for 35 years at the institute, starting in its early years, I have seen CULI grow from a healthy infant to a strong mature person. In a human being’s life, forty years usually marks a time when a person is firmly established with experience, social recognition and financial security. The Chulalongkorn University Language Institute is already the most prestigious language institution of higher learning in Thailand and is also recognized internationally through its persistent efforts to create excellent English language programs for its students and the public. Yet, CULI is still young and has more energy to go further to an even brighter future. An outstanding institution cannot be built overnight. During the past forty years, CULI’s place as a leading language institution has been secured through the hard work and selfless devotion of many people. I am delighted to say that I have been proud to be a part of this reputable institution. It is my sincere hope to see continued success at the Chulalongkorn University Language Institute. Prakaikaew Opanon-amata Former Deputy Director for International Affairs Former Deputy Director for Research Retired instructor Assistant to the President, Navamindradhiraj University (2015-present)
CULI gave me more than a job, or job security, for that matter. I have learned a lot working for CULI: individualization – a form of programmed learning with the provision of self-pacing, communicative approach, self-access learning, standardized tests, experiential English etc., to name a few, whatever is the name of the game at that point. CULI then gave me the opportunities to try my ideas and make myself useful teaching, CULI’s 40 th Anniversary and working on test-writing and translation service assignments. Without CULI support, I definitely would not have learned as much. CULI was also where I met many valuable friends and colleagues, young and old. I have now retired, but considering how much time one spends at work, CULI has undoubtedly been a big part of my life. I also have to say ‘a big happy part.’ In this way, how can I not love CULI and have only the best wishes for CULI as the institute as well as for all those working for CULI always. Ubolrat Thengtrirat Retired instructor In my opinion, CULI has enjoyed such success not because of its budget but because of its academic human resources. CULI’s staff are so professional because they are carefully selected. When I applied for a job here more than 30 years ago, in addition to an applicant having to graduate with honors or study abroad where English was the first language, applicants had to pass the most rigorous English tests and observation. After I started working here I came to truly appreciate the working environment. I realized that there was not excessive competitiveness among the teaching staff. Instead, the mixture of teamwork and independence at CULI allowed us to work in harmony. Our achievements were a product of a team work—and were not a patchwork, but always a well woven fabric. As a result, I am proud and happy to be able to have been part of the teaching staff at CULI. Krongkeo Kannasoot Retired instructor
Dear CULI After retirement, whenever I come to Chula I can’t help stopping by to say hello. It’s more than 30 years that I have worked with you! You still CULI’s 40 th Anniversary look beautiful, cheerful, lively and smart. When I think back to my days here, I realize that I have always been surrounded by many good things. I see beautiful and smart friends walking to and from faculties, hands laden with teaching materials but still smiling. I hear greetings, laughing, talking from the common room, people sharing food and stories and I can’t help joining them happily. Here, two words come to mind: chance and choice. The chance to impart knowledge and experience to others each year. And choice: we choose our own office, where we can enjoy the peace of our quiet corner before and after teaching. We also choose our schedules, subjects and sometimes, even students. At the age of forty, you look mature and established. I wish you more and more prosperous and productive years ahead. Thank you CULI Parichat Choochotkaew Retired instructor Whenever I sit back and reminisce, fond memories come to mind of my days working for over 34 years at the Chulalongkorn University Language Institute. CULI had a very humble beginning with a small work force. I was one of the first group of seven newly-fledged young instructors who passed the recruitment process and joined CULI in 1978. I remember how we persevered together despite the difficulty of our task. Our first challenge was to prepare teaching materials for the first, second and third year students of the Faculties of Engineering, Political Science, and Commerce and Accountancy. With Professor Toemsakdi Krishnamra, whom we affectionately called “father”, experts from the British Council helped us in material preparation, teaching methodology and staff development. Over the years, CULI has grown tremendously and has assumed a remarkable role in the ELT world, fulfilling its challenging mission for
academic excellence. In addition, the institute has collaborated with many local and international institutes, universities and organizations in various projects. I feel privileged to have had the opportunity to work closely with a group of highly capable Thai and international scholars and colleagues. Commitment, dedication and consideration are core characteristics of CULI’s 40 th Anniversary CULI staff. With pride, I can say that a strong tie of love and friendship remains in our hearts. On this auspicious occasion, I would like to extend my sincere congratulations for CULI’s 40 anniversary. I also wish CULI administrators th as well as all staff, continued happiness and success. Wattanawan Sanguanruang Former Deputy Director for International Affairs Retired instructor With over three decades of working at CULI, I can honestly say that it has been more like a second home to me than just a place of work. CULI has continually motivated me to become a better version of myself. I have found lifetime friends, young and old, among my colleagues, and we have shared our happiness as well as sorrow, and supported one another along the path of lifelong friendship. I am and will always be eternally grateful to CULI. Engtip Rattarungsri Retired instructor
Part-time teaching at CULI has been one of the happiest activities for me since my early retirement in 2012. Like all lecturers, I like seeing my students having fun while studying a variety of topics. Many of my students CULI’s 40 th Anniversary are very hardworking and try to finish assignments such as the online diagnostic test and SALC activities early. Class discussion is the most enjoyable part of the lesson for them so we usually spend most time on that. It can be difficult to move on to the next part of the lesson when the students keep raising their hands, wanting to share their ideas. The most beautiful thing about being in the classroom is that the students can laugh and enjoy themselves even when they cannot answer correctly. What a friendly atmosphere! At Chula, teaching and studying English is fun, a lot of fun. Rachada Ratanasin Part-time instructor (2013-present) The picture of a banner waving in front of CULI, “Come and join us on the summer English camp”, is still fresh in my mind. I joined the camp and that was the beginning of my personal transformation. After the English camp, I was selected to be the president of the English Club. Here, my confidence and leadership skills were developed which helped me enormously in my position in an international and multicultural environment. Now returning to CULI for the second time, as a teacher, I have noticed many changes, for instance, a well-equipped Self-Access Learning Center with excellent language programs, a variety of books, magazines, newspapers, videos and computers, and interesting activities to help students excel in English. As CULI reaches its 40 anniversary, I would like to thank all the staff, th past and present, for their dedication and hard work. I wish CULI continued success for the years ahead. Kittipong Chiaoroongroj Part-time instructor (2010-present)
My professional life revolves around using English for communication in today’s globalized society. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to join the Lower Mekong Initiative (LMI) English Project: Professional Communication Skills for Leaders on the topic of environment organized by the Chulalongkorn University Language Institute (CULI) in collaboration with the Regional English Language Office of the US Embassy in Thailand CULI’s 40 th Anniversary to help me with this. The course has helped me improve my English skills as well as provided me with knowledge of procedures and techniques on how to make a proper presentation and present proposals at an international conference. In addition, I’d really like to thank all the teachers of CULI for their effective teaching and the friendly atmosphere. While taking the courses, I could recognize that my English communication skill was improving every day. Apart from that, CULI gave me the great opportunity of sharing my professional experience with the students in “Career Talk” – one of the special activities of the CULI English Club. On the occasion of CULI’s 40 anniversary, I would like to say a th special thanks to all teachers and staff for your continuing efforts and congratulations on their forty years of excellence. Kanokthip Wacharalekagool Invited Speaker for CULI English Club (2015-present) Policy and Plan Analyst United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification Group (UNCCD) Planning Division, Land Development Department Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives
I first became familiar with CULI as part of a Staff Development Project administered through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and I was impressed with CULI’s dedicated and efficient staff. I now look at becoming a CULI’s 40 th Anniversary CULI staff member myself as one of the key turning points in my life. Professionally, I have had the opportunity to work in many positions in almost all of the departments such as the secretary to the director and the secretary to the Academic Affairs Department. Personally, I have come to see CULI as my second home, and I am fortunate to be surrounded by friends I have made here who have supported me both in good times and in bad. In my view, having good relationships with colleagues is one of the best parts of working at CULI and I think this also helps promote efficiency. I am delighted to be part of this institute that has contributed so much to Thai education. On its 40 Anniversary, I wish CULI th continued prosperity and success. Charassri Potiwattutham Support Staff (1989-present) Head of Academic Administration (2014-present) I have been working at CULI for 26 years, and I am going to retire next year, my 27 anniversary. It is here that I have witnessed a lot of changes th as well as challenges that CULI has faced in its management. All executive teams share the same common goal of developing CULI. However, in my opinion, the diversity of staff points of view, both academic and support, has been the main challenge. So, systematic management is the first priority. To achieve this, I strongly believe that communication between the support staff and immediate supervisors is the most important factor which can bring about positive outcomes. In addition, regardless of differences in attitudes, all CULI staff members only need “understanding”. No matter what role they play, no matter what generation they belong to, it is essential for everyone to open their minds and learn from each other. Ornwipa Khumyai Support staff, Academic Service Center (1991-present)
The Chulalongkorn University Language Institute is like a huge tree. For forty years, this gigantic tree has branched out and stood in stability with its roots spreading deep into the soil. Sometimes, this tree has been through storms, downpours, and droughts. Yet, it remains upright and strong, being a protecting shelter for birds, squirrels, and any passers-by. Likewise, CULI has long performed its duty with a strong will and CULI’s 40 th Anniversary determination for the utmost benefit of the society and it will continue this responsibility forever. Somkiat Panyameepholkit Support Staff, SALC (1980-present) The Chulalongkorn University Language Institute (CULI) is a great resource for English language instruction and possesses highly capable instructors. It is widely known in Thailand due to its outstanding academic achievements including CU-TEP, a well-known English proficiency test, the Self-Access Learning Center (SALC), which was a pioneer of its kind, and the English development project titled “Sustainable Si Chang” which supports local people in Chonburi. In addition, CULI is blessed with teaching and non-teaching staff who have great integrity, capability, and efficiency. That is why CULI is a valuable institution which contributes English language instruction and resources to both students and the wider public. Sureerat Kongsomprat Head of Correspondence Unit (1983-present)
Throughout my 37 years in the Operations team of CULI, I participated in a number of activities including representing CULI in the university sports activities for almost 30 years and acting as a representative on CULI’s 40 th Anniversary the Chulalongkorn University Savings Cooperative Administrative Committee for 14 years. CULI has developed apace from its strong foundation laid during the first ten years. With the continuous support of our administrative board, we continually adopt new pedagogical technologies to be used in developing courses provided by the language institute. Therefore, it is no doubt that for the past 40 years, since the establishment of CULI, we have proved to the public that we are truly the nation’s leading educational institution whose mission is to strive for academic excellence, maintain the language education policy objectives in accordance with those of the university and the government, conduct research beneficial for the development of language teaching, as well as to become an institution with a commitment to enhance and disseminate the knowledge of language teaching and language testing throughout the country. Vichian Plumkid Head of General Administration (1980-present) Dating back to 1986, my first year working here, CULI was just a small institute occupying only two stories, the third and the fourth floors, and a room on the first floor to sell books and supplementary materials. Six years later, the second floor area and room 107 became CULI’s property. In the subsequent years, CULI’s goal to have a wider space to respond to the needs of its students would become reality. In my view, the physical expansion reflects CULI’s prosperity and continuous determination to achieve its instructional mission to produce great graduates with first rate English language skills, our country’s key asset. Wichian Koedphum Support Staff, IT Unit Former Head of Building, Grounds and Vehicle Unit (1986-present)
It’s 24 years now since I started working here at CULI. My first day was totally different from a typical day today. Then the State Personnel Development Center, under the supervision of the Research Department, arranged only one to two projects a year. After a while, I realized that I would not be able to grow in my career without love for what I was doing. This caused me to change from being an unmotivated employee to a very CULI’s 40 th Anniversary dedicated one, aiming to work harder and make my work more systematic. From that turning point, CULI became my second home as I started working early in the morning until late at night. Now CULI is much more prosperous in all respects whether in terms of academic programs, research or extra academic services. It has also assembled a huge number of highly capable staff. As part of the institute, I am always determined to work at my best and contribute to the growth of CULI. It’s because of CULI’s support that I have developed professionally. I congratulate all CULI staff for our success. Srichan Tantineeranart CULI Support staff The State Personnel Development Center, Academic Service Department (1993-present) The picture of CULI in 1982 is still clear in my memory. Then, CULI was a small institute with few staff members occupying only the third and fourth floors of the Prem Purachatra Building. I have been very happy to keep CULI clean and tidy and efficiently deliver documents to staff. Apart from my two main responsibilities mentioned, I also assisted other units and departments, especially when there was a shortage of staff or when CULI was organizing an important event. For example, over two decades ago when computers were not available, I helped the staff in the Distribution Unit to manually write receipts for students. I also helped prepare materials for national seminars and international conferences. Nowadays, CULI has more staff members and is more modern and well-equipped with high technology. However, one thing that never changes is the helpfulness of all staff members working together. I am so proud to be part of CULI to witness its prosperity and wish to see its ongoing development continue in the future. Vilai Boonpame Janitor (1982-present)
It is quite inspiring how the collaboration between Chulalongkorn University Language Institute, the Office of the Higher Education Commission, and the U.S. Department of State has grown and developed over the last five CULI’s 40 th Anniversary years. The Lower Mekong Initiative Professional Communication Skills for Leaders (PCSL) project has consistently improved and this is due, in large part, to the commitment and leadership of the Thai team at CULI. Thank you for your commitment to expanding opportunities for professionals and educators in your country and your region, and thank you for opening your doors to this U.S./Thailand collaboration. The PCSL program has cultivated transnational relationships that will continue long after the project ends this year, and the staff and faculty of CULI can be proud of a job well done. Megan Montgomery English Language Fellow, Thailand (2015-2017) Over the last five years, the Chulalongkorn University Language Institute (CULI) has been a part of the successful Professional Communication Skills for Leaders project. This transnational collaboration between Cambodia, Laos PDR, Myanmar, Thailand, the United States, and Vietnam has been one of the most active endeavors of the Lower Mekong Initiative. CULI faculty and staff have contributed to many aspects of the project and provided essential support for seminars, fora, conferences, and workshops. I have enjoyed co-teaching and presenting with CULI staff. Working on this project has been one of the highlights of my professional teaching career. Ami Christensen English Language Fellow, Thailand (2015-2017)
Since its establishment on 7th November 1977, with an original mission “to provide English language instruction and training as well as conduct research related to the Thai and the English languages”, CULI has greatly developed its role. It has provided courses to correspond to various needs of faculties in Chulalongkorn University. In addition, it also caters to a variety of functions for both government and the private sectors. One CULI’s 40 th Anniversary highlight is the initiation of proficiency tests under two well-known names, the “CU-TEP” and “CULI Test”. With a strong foundation and expertise as a leading institute in testing and assessment, I hope to see CULI developing its test bank which can respond to the needs of all stakeholders in Thailand. Similarly to other teaching institutes challenged by ever changing global circumstances and the advancement of technology, I wish to see CULI continue motivating and strengthening their teaching and support staff over the long term to enhance and make an even stronger academic contribution. Puth Seesopaporn Retired Support staff Former Administrative Director (1982-2016) I have seen continuous progress at CULI over the years. It originally started as a project of the Planning and Development Department of Chulalongkorn University. It later became an English language center and merged with the Central Institute of the English Language (CIEL) of Ministry of University Affairs. Eventually, it was established as the “Chulalongkorn University Language Institute”. CULI provides English language instruction to both undergraduate and graduate students. In addition, it is well-known for its Self-Access Learning Center and as a center of English language academic resources. Dating back 40 years, CULI started as a small sprout. All of the staff has helped water, weed and fertilize, to cultivate and strengthen it. All share the same goal to see this plant grow and be fruitful year after year. Now, CULI is like a deep-rooted tree of Chulalongkorn University which has contributed greatly to Thailand’s educational institutions and its contribution will last forever. Pannee Meethong Former head of Self-Access Learning Center (SALC) Retired Support staff
CULI moved to its current and permanent location in the Prem Purachatra Building after periods in the Planning and Development Department, the Faculty of Commerce and Accountancy, the Computer CULI’s 40 th Anniversary Building (aka Chamchuri 8) and the Statistics Building. Now CULI is like a big tree with strong deep roots. I am very proud to have been a part of CULI since its establishment to my retirement. Supenporn Pengsa-ard Retired Support staff In my opinion, university is like an incubator, preparing youths with skills and knowledge so that they can achieve their goals. Language is a crucial skill that can open up many opportunities and benefits for us. CULI helps students to practice, use and improve their English skills. With the various activities and programs that CULI provides, each student can choose how to improve the English skills they lack, making CULI stand out from regular English courses or tutoring. The program that I participate in the most is the CU Gavel Club, an English public speaking club. The Gavel Club has opened up many opportunities for me: receiving a scholarship from the Innes Vienna Institute, participating in the Dtac Telenor Youth Forum, participating in the Asean Students Leadership Forum and other beneficial activities. Although I have been a club member for more than 2 years, I still learn new things at every meeting. I strongly recommend the club to other Chulalongkorn students who love to keep improving and to stand out from others. Chanavee Suwanasri Faculty of Architecture, 5 year (2013-present) th Vice President of Public Relations of CULI Gavel Club (May 2016-present)
My Impression of Let’s Chat The aspect of Let’s Chat that impressed me the most was the sincerely supportive intention behind the activity; the Language Institute’s collective desire for students to improve their English through self-directed learning tools in the SALC. When I first heard about it, I wondered if it was necessary since there were already so many other English activities for CULI’s 40 th Anniversary students to choose from. However, when I participated as one of the student assistants in the activity, I realized that having students of more or less the same age conduct Let’s Chat was what set it apart from other English activities which often involved instructors. In this manner, I believe Let’s Chat allowed students to open up more, dare to make mistakes, and apply their English skills in a practical way without reserve. Indeed, it was truly moving to meet many fellow students and witness their self-driven initiative to master English. Tientip Chalokkongtaworn Faculty of Arts, Year 4 (2014-2017) Bachelor of Arts Program in Language and Culture (BALAC) When I was a first-year student in the Faculty of Science, I took English as a compulsory course. I felt like English was not important for me and that I wasn’t good at it. Then in my fourth year, I realized that I wasn’t able to communicate with foreigners, which really matters for my future. As a result, I started practicing and coming to CULI, which really helped me to improve my English skills. I went to SALC to do all of the activities that they had. The teachers and staff were so nice and kind to me. They always gave me wonderful advice. I registered in 2 English courses in my last semester. I did my best and it paid off. This made me realize that if I try as hard as I can, I can accomplish anything. While studying at CULI, the teachers never got tired of giving me help on my pronunciation, writing, presentations, mock exams, resume writing and how to make a great interview—even though they sometimes scolded me for being late. Sarah Gaffar Faculty of Science, Year 4 (2014-2017)
As an Arts student majoring in English, I felt the need to find as many opportunities as I could to be in an English speaking atmosphere. The CU Gavel Club and English Club caught my attention immediately. Why? CULI’s 40 th Anniversary Not only was I able to practice my English, but I was also able to share experiences and create friendships for a lifetime. CULI inspired me to speak, to dream big and to make that a reality. With my 3 years of journalistic experience at BBTV Channel 7, I can proudly say that English is what brought me forward in this competitive world. I learnt not to be afraid to speak English and that the more I spoke, the more I learned. Joining activities at CULI was instrumental in helping me to achieve my goals. If English is a door that opens up the whole wide world, CULI is definitely a key that can lead you to success. Jinny Nicharee Patthong News anchor, BBTV CH7 Faculty of Arts (2009-2012) CU Gavel Club Vice President Education (January-July, 2010) CU Gavel Club President (January-July, 2012) During my 4 years at Chulalongkorn University, I enrolled in many courses offered by CULI and also regularly participated in various activities in the SALC which were designed to meet the various needs of English language learners. In addition to the excellent facilities and lessons, CULI has been continuously trying to improve and develop to create the best learning experience for students. For me, CULI is the ideal language institute for students to effectively enhance their English skills in a friendly environment with devoted staff. I dare say that I would not be successful today without the help of CULI and SALC. Nontaphop Charoenkhwan Officer at The Department of Provincial Administration, The Ministry of Interior Faculty of Political Science (2011-2015) SALC Let’s Chat Session Leader (2013-2015)
Growing up in America during my early years gave me an edge in English competency when compared to my Thai peers. Quite often scoring top of the class during high school, I became a bit cocky. It was not until I entered Chulalongkorn University and found out that my English was just a little bit above standard but still lacked writing skills. Thanks to CULI teachers and their curriculum, I got back on track. Thus, CULI played an CULI’s 40 th Anniversary essential part in bringing me to where I am today. Then, in early 2017, Chulalongkorn University selected me to be host of the CU on the Road English-language quiz show which presented the chance to work with CULI staff again. This reconfirmed to me the devotion and inspiration of CULI staff. Thank you again. Suphajon Klinsuwan TV presenter and news anchor Lecturer, Faculty of Journalism (International Program), Thammasat University Political Science graduate, Chulalongkorn University (2003) If someone asked me to think of the best experiences in my university life, there would be a lot of them associated with CULI. The Institute impressed me from the beginning by sending me some of the best teachers I’ve met in my life in the courses it provided. I never felt I was forced or obliged to study. The lessons were tailored to fit different students from different faculties and majors. In the Activating Skills in English course, the teach- er inspired me and other teachers-to-be, as she showed that she understood us very deeply. CULI also became the place I came to every weekend as a member of the Gavel and English Clubs. This provided me with the opportunity to meet great people, to do activities, to travel and to learn. I can’t imagine my college life without CULI. Karanpatt Zienxanoh English Teacher, Assumption College (2017) CU Gavel Club Vice President Education (2013) CU Gavel Club Secretary (2012)
