Chevrolet Traverse The longest SUV and the biggest, most spacious interior Although its interior design is not the prettiest, the Traverse’s third row is pretty roomy. Ingress and egress is easy, and you don’t feel claustrophobic when riding in the back. But for almost $50,000 we wish the interior had more to offer. Ford Explorer Less than a year in and already feeling old The floating screen is a nice touch, but there are exposed wires underneath. The Explorer’s interior can’t compete in terms of value or design—from its poor choice of materials to the short list of amenity features. Honda Pilot Black on black on black for the Black Edition Besides the black wheels and grille, the Black Edition adds black leather seats with red inserts. A new infotainment system adds smart features like CabinTalk, which lets the driver talk to his or her kids through the speakers.

Hyundai Palisade Quilted leather and handy features go beyond expectations If you remove the Hyundai badges, some people may think this is a luxury-brand interior. The quilted leather in every row is distinct, and handy features like a button that instantly moves the second-row seat forward make the Palisade stand out. Kia Telluride Standing out in a crowded, popular field When Kia’s interior designers worked on the Telluride, they wanted the cabin to stand out. The grab handles on the center console and the lines used on the seats are distinct design elements that are not typically seen in this segment. Mazda CX-9 A plush cabin overridden by a poor infotainment system One feature we disliked the most in the CX-9 was the center console on the second row. It’s big and bulky and doesn’t do much for rear passengers. Regular armrests would do the job without taking so much space.

Subaru Ascent When a color combination really stands out After getting in and out of all nine SUVs, the Ascent’s interior really stood out thanks to its tri-color combination. The light brown leather seats were completely different from the rest, and everything inside the cabin was well labeled and easily reachable. Toyota Highlander Smart cubbies and chic trays for all Even in the mid-trim Highlander XLE, the materials and cabin layout are well established. But we cannot get over how bad the third-row legroom is. Even for short city drives, the third row is cramped and claustrophobic. Volkswagen Atlas Exceptionally roomy and comfortable, but plasticky The second row is very spacious and comfortable, and accessing the third row is easy even when you don’t get captain’s chairs. But the amount of hard plastic you’ll find in the second and third rows is too much.
