GORUMARA NATIONAL PARK Gorumara National Park is a National Park in Northern Bengal, India, located in the Himalayan foothills’ Terai region. The Gorumara grassland is well-known for its natural population of the Great Indian One-Horned Rhino. A lagoon with beautiful surroundings is about 1 mile away. BAKKHALI Bakkhali is one of the numerous deltaic islands that dot southern Bengal. Except for a handful on the outskirts, most of the islands are part of the Sundarbans. Bakkhali has seven tourist attractions that visitors may visit. One of the few beaches that provides excellent views of both sunrise and sunset. Bakkhali Beach Bakkhali’s long, broad beach spans from Bakkhali to Frazergunj. Although there are no tigers in the mangrove forest near the beaches, it is a popular tourist destination. Although the beach is robust enough to support bikes and cars, certain areas are soft and sinkable. A peaceful walk on the beach, particularly around sunset, is both restorative and lovely. SAGAR ISLAND Gangasagar, also known as Sagar, is a vast deserted island of 300 square kilometres located where the Hooghly River meets the sea. The Gangasagar Mela, which takes place on Makar Sankranti in January, is reputed to draw millions of Hindu pilgrims. After the sacred Kumbh Mela, the Ganga Sagar Fair is the world’s second-largest gathering. The island’s abundance of mangrove swamps makes it a popular tourist attraction. 110

West Bengal My El Dorado 111 FRAZERGANJ Frazerganj, named for Andrew Fraser, is only 2 kilometres north of Bakkhali. Fraser attempted to develop the region into a resort in the early 1900s but was unable to do so because the waves washed the structures away. The remnants of his office may still be seen here. In Frazerganj, there is a Wind Energy Farm that generates 1 MW and will soon be expanded to produce 2 MW. SUNDARBAN Sundarbans, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is located in the 24 Parganas district, roughly 110 kilometres from Kolkata. The Sundarbans was named after one of the mangrove trees, Sundari (Heritiera Minor). They are part of the world’s biggest delta, created by the great rivers Ganga, Brahmaputra, and Meghna. NEW 7 WONDERS OF NATURE Aside from having the world’s biggest mangrove ecosystem, the Sundarbans also have the world’s largest deltaic mangrove forests and are home to one of India’s most iconic animal species, the Royal Bengal Tiger. It is also the world’s biggest estuary forest, with hundreds of streams and tributaries crisscrossing it, as well as a network of tidal rivers, tiny islands of salt-tolerant mangrove forests, and mudflats. SUDHANYAKHALI WATCH TOWER A wildlife enthusiast can glimpse a tiger from the Sudhanyakhali Watch Tower. The watch tower has a capacity of 25 people. Behind the guard, the tower is a pond with delicious water. Wild animals used to come here to drink water. Behind the pond is a huge grassland that provides an energising view of the wilds. Aside from tigers, other animal species such as crocodiles, wild boars, and axis deer may be seen. 111

112 West Bengal My El Dorado SUNDARBAN NATIONAL PARK Sundarbans is the world’s biggest mangrove forest, featuring a high concentration of Royal Bengal Tigers. Many unique and endangered creatures live in the biosphere reserve, including aquatic mammals, tigers, birds, and reptiles. Sundarbans are mostly found between India and Bangladesh at the confluence of the Ganga and Brahmaputra basins. WILDLIFE OF SUNDARBANS More than 250 tigers live in the Sunderbans jungle. There are also chital deer and rhesus monkeys in the wild. Batagur baska, an endangered river terrapin, may be seen on Mechua Beach. Crocodiles can be observed often along the mud banks. SAJNEKHALI WATCH TOWER The Sajnekhali Guard Tower is one of the most well-known watch towers in the park. From here, a tourist can receive authorization to enter the national park. The main attractions in this area are the Bono Bini Temple, the Mangrove Interpretation Centre, and the Bengal Tourism Department’s tourist resort. This watch tower makes exploring the outdoors enjoyable and simple. BHAGABATPUR CROCODILE SANCTUARY The Bhagabatpur Crocodile Project in the Sundarbans has recently become a popular tourist attraction. The extensive mangrove forest near the junction of the Saptamukhi river system offers enormous natural beauty that draws visitors all year.
