2020 September—December Program Guide(309) 921-5074 www.ipdpl.org Your key to activities and programs at all Illinois Prairie District Public Library branches!

A Letter from the Director Dear Patrons, At this point, it’s old news. All six IPDPL branches were forced to close on March 17 this year. We made the announcement on March 14, which led to a busy, chaotic Saturday and Monday. Staff adapted to the unique situation and responded quickly to patron needs. Everyone was safely relocated home for the short-term. And then, the longer-term. While our buildings remained closed until June 29, staff provided curbside service to patrons beginning on May 1. So, what did we do between March 17 and May 1? Most obviously, our online borrowing skyrocketed. Statistics for TumbleBooks alone, as an example, suggest usage increased by 800% in March, tripling again in April! Additionally, we temporarily doubled the number of checkouts available on Hoopla, making for a high of 732 borrows in April, up from pre-pandemic highs of around 300. We also reimagined our programming efforts to continue to provide services to our communities, such as summer reading and our ever-popular story hours. We interviewed best-selling, award-winning authors via Zoom and even recreated Dial-A- Story, a popular library pastime for many of our patrons (dial 309-921-5060 to listen to a new story each week). Be sure to visit our YouTube channel to see some of our great programming! With the release of this special programming guide, we attempt to navigate our new normal. To be perfectly honest, we aren’t sure when special guests will feel comfortable coming back to provide the big, splashy in-person programming that we are proud to have built up over the past couple of years. But, we do know they want to come back and, as a result, we can all look forward to several big authors that are eagerly waiting in the wings, so to speak. Meanwhile, we are excited to reopen community spaces for small groups to meet up, including book clubs, knitting groups, and adult coloring throughout our district! Details are listed throughout this booklet. In July, we celebrated 70 years of library service to Woodford County. We reopened a renovated branch in Roanoke. We’ve added upgrades to the look and feel of our headquarter location in Metamora. We continue to look ahead to see what the next 70 years will bring to our communities. Thank you for being our patron! Joel Joel D Shoemaker, MLIS Director
