CHEMICAL MELTING POINTS - SHOULD IT BE SOLID OR LIQUID? • Some chemicals have melting points which lie within a range covering typical room temperatures, chemical storage room temperatures & temperatures which might be encountered in our warehouse or during delivery (particularly in winter) • The consequence of this is that these chemicals may be in either a solid or liquid state on arrival, or when required for use • If they have solidified (due to lower temperatures) then they will need re-melting some time before use. Please note that the temperature may have to be raised somewhat higher than the stated melting point of the chemical in order for it to melt (liquefy) - which may take an hour or two • The best method is to gradually raise the temperature, by placing the chemical container in a water bath or jug of hot (not boiling) water and allowing it to gradually come up to temperature. Please note that some of these chemicals are flammable, so no naked flames or high temperatures should be used during this process. PRODUCT TST strips (Temperature, Steam and Time) and Autoclave Indicator Tape are useful, if not essential, when using autoclaves, as they give a clear indication that the sterilisation cycle has been completed correctly. This is particularly important when disposing of spent cultures, to ensure that all microbes have been properly destroyed. The TST strips will change colour when the correct conditions have been reached (i.e. temperature, steam & time) and Autoclave Indicator Tape will change colour to indicate that the contents have been autoclaved. (Please note that this is not as specific as the TST strips as it ONLY indicates that autoclaving has taken place, rather than that specific conditions have been attained). Timstar offers 3 types of TST strips - 121˚C for 15 minutes (AU00980); 126˚C for 11 minutes (AU100200) – as well as an autoclave indicator tape (AU00976). We strongly recommend the use of sterilisation indicators, to be sure that the correct sterilisation conditions have been achieved.
