TABLE OF CONTENTS Travels in Parallel Reality (4 - 11) Genius in Nature (12 - 17) History, Theory & Culture (18 - 21) International Summer Design Workshop (22 - 27)

1. TRAVELS IN PARALLEL REALITY A project that consisted of us finding a location in Singapore that existed in the past, was demolished and filled in by its modern replacement. With the knowledge of how both buildings operated and their respective audience, we were tasked to combine both the past and present into an entirely new space.

2 - Series of Elements

research of location -

I explore the more “degenerate” side of attending the cinema in this collage, using key - collage of various elements elements of both the past and ongoing events that occur in a movie theatre. This is done to attempt to stitch a story together that I could use to create a new building concept. movies showing projectionists - misinterpretation of Singapore by overseas film industries = could be considered “propaganda” - unbothered if movie is inappropriate or not, - how citizens respond = skipping showtimes of said automatically assumes movies, either out of disinterest or protest? the audience is the suitable age local film industry snacks and concession booths - small, not much of interest compared to - theatres intentionally raise prices to earn more = public starts sneaking in their own snacks overseas rivals - could lead to some making raunchy, outrageous propaganda just for the sake of catching the public eye? - possible “brainwashing” of sorts, especially to the easily impressionable

timeline of concept proposal - With the conclusion that theatres and their visitors have a common interest in “scamming” each other, be it for money or pure entertainment, I was inspired to conceptualise a place that encourages this unspoken cinema culture. The following timeline shows the life of an employee that works in this hypothetical cinema, with the corny title of “Come-N’-Con” to suit the hijinks that go on in the theatre.

Collage created by cutting up an old projector and inserting other - sectional collage of project cinema elements into spaces on Photoshop, in an attempt to visualise EMPLOYEE LIVING how people could move around in such a complicated space. 2. GENIUS IN NATURE The project objective was to choose and study an animal, insect, etc then use its unique features to create and design a special dwellling for the people living within the space.

research on chosen organism - The chosen organism for this project was the water strider, chosen for its ability to float on water. With further observation, a specific habit was found; they liked to stay in groups to protect each other during dormancy(similar to hibernation), which ends when the summer solstice has passed and temperatures begin to decrease. So a decision was made to focus my architecture on that inclusivity between them during that stage.

- study diagrams of water strider

3D rendering of project The end product was a large, buoyant structure made up of smaller units for homes, all created for the purpose of being habitable for fishing communities that preferred living out in the sea rather than on land. Front view Side view The units are all able to reattach and detach, like how the water strider can move freely around and then go back to its family when they need protection.

- home unit fishing process One unit that fits a family is composed of four water strider-like structures, with four different rooms within them to represent different rooms; the bedroom, kitchen/dining room, living room and bathrooms. These four rooms are connected with another water strider structure, attaching them all from the top with a fishing net hanging loosely underneath it; this is how the fishermen living in a unit will be able to catch fish with less effort than needed With this system, they can collect fish easily and either keep it to sustain themselves, or they can choose to trade or sell it in the large centralised unit. This unit serves the purpose of being a marketplace where fishermen and their families could relax, trade and converse with one another, while also acting as a farm and garden on the second floor. Going back to the idea that the smaller family units are able to move about, some will be able to go to land and sell fish to whomever needs them in demand, like markets etc. They would be able to trade them for other foods as well, meat being a notable item, and go back to the centralised unit to trade among other fishermen.

3. HISTORY, THEORY AND CULTURE The course’s final project had us make an abstract paper lantern using geometric structures from the book “Geometry of the Unconscious - An Uncertain Truth in Architecture” by our lecturer Jyanzi Kong, and Photoshopping them into a unique amalgamation to colour, print and cut out.
