A message from the president……….. On behalf of the Niagara County Music Educators Association (NCMEA), the county unit of the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA), I welcome you to the 2019 All County Music Festival Con- certs. It truly is my privilege to preside over these performances that honor the musical achievements of students across our county, the dedi- cation of their music teachers, the support of school districts, and the love of families. The All County experience is special. Children from different communi- ties come together, lend their talents, and create something beauti- ful. They work as a team with each member actively contributing to the final goal. The students think creatively and demonstrate great poise. They learn challenging music, work with a new conductor, make lasting friendships, and create mem- ories that will reach far beyond this day. The incredible skills and talent that brought them to this moment will continue on throughout their lives as they shine for years to come. These young people are the next generation and will add positively to the community. It truly is an amazing experience, a gift. I would be remiss if I did not formally thank the devoted teachers of Niagara County that give up hours of extra time and immeasurable effort to assure this experience is available to your children. The level of mu- sicianship in Niagara County is to be commended and is a direct result of wonderful teaching. Teachers who inspire, motivate, and model; who believe in curiosity, vision, and challenge. The incredible Peter Boonshaft in his book Teaching Music With Passion quotes Zoltan Kodaly- “Real art is one of the most powerful forces….and he who renders it accessible to as many people as possible is a benefactor of hu- manity”. Your children are the leaders of tomorrow. They are the creative force America will need. Part of their success will be from the musical education they have been given. Let us make sure that music education remains a large part of our children’s education. It is through the arts that communities will grow and thrive. A huge thank you parents, families, friends, teachers, adminis- trators for your invaluable support. Now, please sit back, relax and enjoy the beautiful concert and the gifts your children will share today. April Carere, President NCMEA 3

In Memoriam—Amrom Chodos, retired from Barker This year the music community lost a great friend in Amrom Chodos in July of 2018. Amrom Chodos was an orchestra and recital clarinetist and a retired high school music teacher from the Barker Central School District. He studied clarinet with Leon Russianoff and Robert Marcellus, among others, attended the Manhattan School of Music and earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in Clarinet from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1972. Mr. Chodos' performance career includes service as an Army Bandsman in the West Point Band, a member of the \"Creative Associates,\" an avant-garde music group in the Center for the Creative and Performing Arts at the University in Buffalo, a regular performer with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and the Assistant Principal Clarinetist with the Florida Symphony Orchestra in Orlando and a member of the Niagara Symphony Orchestra since 1980. In 1984 he founded the Barker Community Band. He taught Clarinet at the State University College at Fredonia, New York for seven years. Mr. Chodos grew up in Brooklyn, New York surrounded by the sounds of Jewish music which has had a great influence on his performance and compositional career. He wrote many pieces following the traditional style of Klezmer. A personal reflection from Naomi (Kyle) Moore, music teacher at Lockport City School District Some people help change the course of your life forever. The lasting impression is immeasurable. Amrom was one of those people. He loved to the core and knew exactly what was best for every individual. He made me a musician and a teacher. Amrom always went above and beyond and my favorite example of that is when he composed two klezmer pieces for me and we performed them together for my Senior Recital at SUNY Fredonia. Amrom provided everything I needed to get started in my career and was a constant source of encouragement. My testimony to Amrom’s character and impact on music education in our region is just a small example compared to all of the lives he has influenced. A life well lived and not soon forgotten. 15
