ART BY MCCARTHY ART & DESIGNS 2019

INCLUDES: BRAND DESIGN UI / UX DESIGN ART & DESIGN MCCARTHY

ART BY MCCARTHY I was introduced to the Golden Ratio in college, through my studies in design. As an artist up to that point, I struggled explaining how I was able to make a work of art, or a design esthetically appealing. The Golden Ratio is the formula for creating esthetically pleasing art: the rule is that the ratio between small elements and larger elements must be balanced and maintained for it to work. The artist’s mind complex in the sense that we execute a process that is scientifically proven in creating works of art, architecture, and mathematics—often at the speed of thought. Sometimes we don’t know why a design works; it just works. Art and business go hand-in-hand. Art, as the foundation of design is what drives people’s decisions on what house they buy, which car they drive, and even which brands they gravitate to. Such as art is an essential part of business, so much more then is the artist an essential ingredient in your driving your business. Art By McCarthy is the endeavor to bring art into its rightful place in the business world, and to transform the face of the industry through thoughtful design with a purpose. Please enjoy this brief insight on how we have done that so far. Sincerely, David David SJ McCarthy Art By McCarthy artbymccarthy.com

In undergrad, I began designing logos for businesses. By the time I finished my education, my vision became developing brands through design. What started as a small logo design venture led me to using advertising and design principles to develop the identity of a business that aligned with the brand’s story. I studied the DNA of the business, assessed design trends so that the business is visually relevant and unique, and analyzed the target audience to create a brand experience which would be most impactful.

STACY IKE Stacy Ike was developing her career as an actress and tv host in Los Angeles, when she discovered my services. She wanted to use her established brand materials to develop a unique face for her brand. Because of the nature of her brand as tv host and actress, it was necessary to closely knit her personality to her brand. From designing event advertisements, product design, and designing the user experience and branding for her website, we took full responsibility for the development of all graphic content for her brand. With time, we were able to satisfy her expectations for brand imagery that was complimentary to her personality, one that resonate with her audience, and grew her viewership. During my time as Stacy’s Digital Brand Content Manager, I helped grow her audience from 5K content followers to over 10K content followers on Instagram alone.

Detroit based Public Relations firm Mario Morrow & Associates required less digital work, however their brand was in need of updated print materials to bring the brand up to date. They requested fresh brand identity materials to be designed for their business cards, folder and booklet templates, and letterheads and email footers. Referencing what the brand had been designed prior to our influence, we were able to reboot the brand visually in a way that was still recognizable to their previous clients and audiences.

Designing for web and mobile app came later in my education and career. I learned programming logic, which assists me in rapidly learning code languages. Along with developing skills in design, I have been able to couple those skills with technical aptitudes. Understanding visual design proved advantageous when performing user centered research and applying principles in human computer interaction to developing websites and a mobile application interface.

BLUE BOX MOBILE APP As a capstone project, I was a part of a team who sought to solve a community issue through modern technology. We conducted multiple forms of research to identify a common concern on campus. Our process was concept development, layout and wireframing, design reviews and usability testing, we designed a prototype for a mobile application called Blue Box. We found that campus could become a safer place with an open line of communication between the students on college campuses and the local campus security. Blue Box takes the concept of having emergency pillars on campus, and puts it into the phone of every student and faculty member on campus.

Students would be able to contact public safety officers, stay up to date on campus news and events, contact rides from public safety drivers to different campus locations, and report emergencies from a special screen with the button to public safety’s direct hotline. Blue Box makes experiences with campus security interactive in order to engage the college community in fostering a more safe and secure environment for students, faculty & staff. It serves as a concise platform for the campus community to connect with the students, deliver alerts, and safety guidelines and services right from their mobile devices.

Art and design being the center of my interests often translate in the form of digital paintings and portraits. Being an artist keeps me creative and mentally flexible. Being an artist at the core keeps me in a process of constant input and output. I study my art, music, and the society surrounding it and after digesting that, I am able to create new works of art that would reach a group of people with whom the art would resonate.

MJSD MJSD (pronounced “Majesty”) is a fictional expression of mine. I created him as a way to express myself and amy beliefs. He is always smiling, no matter the situation. This sounds good at first, until MJSD finds himself in a grim situation and he’s still smiling, which can be a bit strange, depending on how one were to look at it. There are cases of specifically themed artwork surrounding his character which have direct interpretation attached to them. This character and his depiction generally will allow someone to see whatever they intend to see; he is one who will reveal his story with time, and will also teach us about ourselves depending on what we see when we look at him.

I was born in Kentucky; my upbringing makes me a Chicago native. DePaul University is my alma mater, and while I was there I started the Art By McCarthy design studio. I have been an artist all my life, studied as an architect, then as an advertiser and graphic designer before I began designing for brands. I am dedicated to creative, compelling user experiences, providing design solutions, and being a thought leader in the industry’s design today. I cook, read often, and travel as much as I can these days. Life is always interesting as an entrepreneur, that’s why I remain a student of my craft and industry. I’m a lover of good people and super hero comics.

DAVID SJ McCARTHY Designer & Innovator Dear Exelon, I am a millennial, a college graduate, and an entrepreneur and business owner. My education has allowed me to develop technical skills in software and development, along with corporate communications skills. My career thus far has revolved around communication design strategy, graphic development for products and brands, and playing a part in a team, often managing a team and its efforts. My education and experience make me the right fit to be a Communication Specialist with you. My experience with DePaul in marketing gave me hands on experience with team management, campaign development and advertisement, and project management. This led to my work in digital content management for influencer brands, and visual brand development with businesses and companies. My time with Oracle further developed my team playing and technical abilities and solidified my understanding of cloud software company structure and culture. Personally I have had my artwork featured in national publications, and art shows, and I am looking forward to the next part of this adventure with you. If I am who you are looking for, reach out to me: it would be a pleasure to talk more about building a good, lasting work relationship. I hope to become a valuable member of your team, and look forward to the chance to speak with you about this great opportunity. Thank you for your time and consideration.
