THETFORD HERITAGE AND ARTS WEEK 2021 EVENTS 11th - 19th September

HERITAGE WEEK Welcome to Thetford's heritage week. This is a quick guide to everything that's happening during the week, and we hope that you can attend some or all the events, which have been combined with Leaping Hare, Ancient House Museum, The Guildhall and Thetford Town Council. This week will also co-inside with the official re-opening of The Guildhall. We hope that this, with, other historical places in the town, will become a hub for the history of Thetford. Please enjoy the history that is on our doorstep.

WHAT'S ON - ANCIENT HOUSE MUSEUM Ancient House Open Day's Sunday 12th September 10am to 4pm Saturday 18th September 10am to 5pm Explore one of the best examples of an early Tudor house in East Anglia. The house dating from 1490 became a museum of Thetford life in 1924. The building and much of the collection were donated by Prince Frederick, Duleep Singh, second son of Maharajah Duleep Singh. FREE ENTRY but must be booked in advance here https://norfolk- museums.arttickets.org.uk/ancient-house/2021-09-12-heritage- open-day-at-ancient-house-museum Maharajah Pop-Up Exhibition Sunday 12th September 10am to 4pm Saturday 18th September 10am to 5pm This special pop-up exhibition explores the life of Maharajah Duleep Singh, the last Sikh ruler of Punjab in Northern India through images, illustrations and text. The exhibition will be displayed alongside a set of Indian miniatures which includes ones of Maharajah Duleep Singh as a child and his mother, Maharani Jinda. WHAT'S ON - LEAPING HARE Mrs Sanderson Talks WVS Saturday 11th September 11am - 2pm It's 1942 Mrs Sanderson is chatting all things WVS and making the most of your rations! Come and meet Mrs Sanderson and Aunt Dolly. It's 1942, jam making season and Mrs Sanderson is a WVS volunteer and likes to make the most of her rations. She'll show you how to make something from nothing and tell you all about the work of the WVS in Thetford. Look out for Mr Bye from Thetford's Homeguard. https://leapinghare.org/events/education/mrs-sanderson-talks-wvs/ Strolling Through Time - Food of the Past Saturday 11th September 2pm - 3.30pm A special Strolling Through Time event for Heritage Open Days. Come with us and explore a little of Thetford's food and drink history. Finish with tea and scones (available to purchase) if desired. https://leapinghare.org/events/heritage/strolling-through-time-food-of-the-past/ Medieval Coin Striking Saturday 18th September 11am - 2pm Come and see how money was made in medieval times. Thetford had its own mint in the 10th Century and coins have been found as far afield as Scandinavia. WHAT'S ON - THE GUILDHALL Saturday 11th September - Thetford Folk - Children's Heritage Show. 3pm A magical interactive theatre show about the historic characters of The Guildhall and Thetford. Full of fun and laughter, our show will inspire learning about history in a fun way. FREE EVENT Tuesday 14th September - Guildhall Sketchers 10am - 12noon and 6pm-8pm At this workshop, we invite you into The Guildhall to explore and be inspired by our beautiful building and historical stories. You will then be able to create your own art work, that will be displayed in The Guildhall. This workshop is suitable for mixed abilities, although some experience with art will help, as work is self-directed. FREE EVENT Wednesday 15th September - Tales of Thetford Assizes - 7.30pm An Immersive theatre experience. Assize courts tended to deal with the more serious criminal offences. Come and join our jury for an evening of theatre and storytelling. Tickets limited. £12.50 each.

WHAT'S ON - THE CARNEGIE Tuesday 14th September - 2pm - Botanical Drawing Workshop- Isobel Bartholomew from Iceni Botanical Artists will be leading a class in learning to produce accurate and beautiful depictions of plants - in this case some locally grown edibles. Thursday 16th September - 7.30pm - Edible Britain - A Conversation with Richard Mabey. The renowned author of ‘Nature Cure’, ‘Flora Britannica’ and ‘Wild Cooking’ and the foraging bible ‘Food for Free’, talks about our local wild plants and their many uses. WHAT'S ON-KING'S HOUSE Saturday 11th September - Regalia and Civic Heritage - 10am- 2pm - Thetford has more than 800 years of mayoralty and the regalia will be on display, upstairs in the Council Chamber, with other civic items.The sword and mace take pride of place within Thetford's Mayoral Regalia.

WHAT'S ON - THE MARKET PLACE HOLMES AND KABLE - PLAY Saturday 18th September at 4pm Sunday 19th September at 1pm and 4pm FREE EVENT This year we have teamed up with Magic Floor Productions to bring Holmes and Kable to life. Inspired by the true story of two petty criminals, sentenced In Thetford assizes court and transported unjustly from Norfolk to Australia in 1787 Come and join us on the Market Place for an immersive, fun adaptation of this incredible story. From the hang man's noose, the kindhearted turnkey to Australia. Join us on the market place for drinks and a tale that you will never forget.
