President’s MESSAGE Summer 2019 Dear Xavier Alumni and Friends, I am pleased to present to you this year’s issue of Xavier Gold magazine. As each year passes, we remain guided by the mission of St. Katharine Drexel to promote the creation of a just and humane society. Today that mission remains alive on our campus. Xavier recently launched programs that address recruitment and retention of black males, started the first collegiate Knights and Ladies of Peter Claver Court, established the Center for Equity, Justice, and the Human Spirit, and partnered to form the Joint Causes of Black Sainthood. Xavier is in good health. The recent forgiveness of the Disaster loan put us on solid financial ground. The University is making strides to expand our recognition nationally. Our academic programs continue to grow with new majors, minors, and graduate degrees that meet the interests of today’s students and prepares this generation of Xavierites for career success in growing industries. Fall 2018 first-year student enrollment grew by 21%, while retention between first and second year grew by nearly 3% - bringing total enrollment to its highest level in eight years. Academic excellence remains at the top of our priority list with nearly 10% of our graduating class of 2019 achieving summa cum laude status and 865 students achieving a spot on the Dean’s Honor Roll this past spring. We maintain our position as the number one producer of African Americans who persist to achieve their MD’s, and have received numerous accolades for our success preparing students to achieve PhD’s in the sciences, law, business, and the humanities. This issue of Gold spotlights a few of our illustrious alumni: legacy families that have sent multiple generations to Xavier, individuals who have served as presidents at some of this country’s best colleges, and a most resourceful 94-year-old who shares incredible memories of her Xavier experience. The Honor Roll of Donors recognizes all of you who made a commitment to Xavier and to those who follow your footsteps today in the halls of our academic buildings. Your support and generosity is vital to our mission to educate deserving students, and we are immensely grateful to each and every one of you. I am grateful. Our students are grateful. I ask for your continued support, commitment, and prayers for the students, faculty, staff, and myself as we work together with you to live our foundational mission each day. Sincerely, Reynold Verret President 2 | XAVIER GOLD

COVER STORY GENERATIONAL Xavierites Legacy families just keep ‘em coming A young Jeanne Victor Labat ’28 and her family on steps of “The Prep” on Magazine Street: (L-R) grandmother Marie Rosine Picou, Jeanne, siblings Emile, Lucien, and Lydia Victor, and mom Leoncia LaBranche Victor. From its humble beginnings as a small prep school to today’s status as a recognized national academic powerhouse, the Xavier gene pool has been enhanced by successive generations of the same families passing through its halls. The names are many, quite familiar, and in more than a few cases, nearly legendary: Banks, Bynum, DeGrange, Dumas, Felton, Haydel, Jupiter, Lapeyrolerie, McKenna, Rousseve, and Tureaud, just to name a few. Some members of these iconic families have returned to campus to serve their alma mater as faculty and staff. Others have spread out throughout the width and breathe of the country, as well as abroad, to become noted leaders in health care, the sciences, education, public and private business, the arts, and government. The one thing they all have in common is a keen recognition that Xavier was, and still is, something special – so much so that they continue to trust each successive generation of their own children to its care. 8 | XAVIER GOLD

THE FAMILY LABAT Always a Family Presence One such family can trace its Xavier lineage back to the earliest days of “The Prep” – the normal school/high school from which the University traces its own unique history – and to the marriage of Victor H. Labat ’33 and Jeanne D’Arc Victor Labat ’28. Jeanne, whose mother Leoncia worked as a cook and seamstress for the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament, lived on the Magazine Street grounds with her mother and three siblings. That fortuitously set the stage for her courtship with the eventual family patriarch, who arrived at The Prep in 1922 with essentially a fifth grade education, the highest level of formal education then afforded to Blacks in his hometown Bay St. Louis, Miss. Thanks to some home-schooling, Victor H., already 18, was actually a little more advanced than that, and he was horrified at the Sister’s initial plans to start him in the lowest grade. “Sister, you can’t put me in a classroom with those little ones” is the accepted version of his reaction. Taking him at his word, and in deference to his age and size, the Sisters placed him in the 10 grade and were rewarded when he graduated in th 1925. At the request of the SBS, Victor H. returned to The Prep to teach manual job training shortly after graduation even though he was now himself a student at the University, which was itself in the process of moving its college operation from Magazine St. to the current Drexel St. (formerly Palmetto St.) location. Jeanne, meanwhile, taught in several rural Louisiana parochial elementary schools also run by the Sisters. So intertwined with the SBS were the couple that when they married in 1931, the Sisters served the wedding breakfast in the dining hall of their convent. Victor H. went on to earn a master’s degree from Howard University, before returning once more to his alma mater (this time the University), where his name would eventually take on legendary proportions. While he led the industrial arts program for many years as both a professor and chairman, he is best remembered as the Xavier’s first alumni director. In Victor H. 1953 1955 1982 1986 THE FAMILY RHODEMAN A Tale of 3 Family Names Still another of Xavier’s legacy families currently has two third-generation students on campus and a third on the way. Their roots go back to the marital union of Thomas Rhodeman, Sr. ’55 and wife Clare Marino Rhodeman ’53, MA ’57, back in late 1950s. Clare, one of eight children, grew up in Biloxi, Miss., and therefore, that their two children – Dr. Thomas Rhodeman, attended Our Mother of Sorrows School, which was staffed Jr. ’82 and Dr. Nichole Rhodeman Herbert ’86 – followed in by the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament. HAIL TO THE Presidents When it comes to leadership in higher education, XULA grads take a back seat to no one 14 | XAVIER GOLD

Let’s test your XULA trivia IQ: name a Xavier alumnus who is serving or has served as a college president or chancellor. If “Dr. Norman C. Francis” immediately popped into your head, your answer, of course, would be both correct and most appropriate. You don’t spend 47 years as the face and voice of one of America’s most iconic Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) without drawing a little attention. But Francis ’52, while arguably foremost, is not the only Xavier graduate to have ascended to ultimate leadership in higher education. In fact, to date a total of nine have done so.
