Professional mountaineering in the Saas Valley dates back to the mid-nineteenth century and pioneers such as Alexander Burgener (1845-1910) and Matthias Zurbriggen (1856-1917). They were the first: guiding affluent Britishindustrialists through the mountains and laying the foundations for tourism in the valley. Humble mountain-farming families becamemountain-guiding dynasties. Indeed, the core activity of the Saas-Fee Guides still comprises tours to the peaks of the valley’seighteen four-thousanders, imparting knowledge, and equipping guests with the right technique for future expeditions. But theexpertise of the best-trained and highest-qualified mountain guides goes beyond that still. In recent years, Saas-Fee Guides havebecome known and applauded for organizing team events in the valley’s mountains, facilitating film projects in high-alpine terrain, maintaining hiking and mountain biking trails, and carrying out of rock face stabilization works. The guides also boast soft adventureskills, offering guided tours over the unique via ferrata of the Saaser Vispa river and fun for all in the Adventure Forest rope park. For years now, the Saas-Fee Guides have been promoting bike-tourism in the Saas Valley through pioneering efforts: be it by takinga shovel and maintaining trails, or by establishing new deals and marketing schemes.

SAAS-FEE GUIDES MAGAZINE Ice formations the size of houses stand on the Fee Glacier below the Alphubel. Photo: Puzzle MediaTARGET AUDIENCET he Saas Valley’s first mountain guides were themselves surprised by the influx of visitors in the middle of the nineteenth century. British tourists took home tales of beautiful peaks and glaciers, and eventually, come 1881, the first of Saas-Fee’s hotels was opened. Uniquely positioned in the glacier village at 1’800 metres above sea level, the founders named the hotel after the Dom, the highest mountain in Switzerland. Locals carried their guests through the glacier village on sedans, their luggage on the back of mules.Needless to say, much has changed since then. Holiday apartments and hotels have come to offer accommodation for more than 7’000 guests. Word-of-mouth no longer suffices to fill the many guest-beds. Now, in addition to cultivating and managing their social media and online presence, Saas-Fee Guides also rely on the high-quality lifestyle magazine to market their range of services.Saas-Fee Guides also intend for the magazine to bring the valley’s natural treasures to the attention of local residents. As such, Saas-Fee Guides Magazine is distributed to around 1’100 private households in the area. The Saas Valley, comprising the four municipalities of Saas-Fee, Saas-Almagell, Saas-Grund and Saas-Balen, is one of the most famous tourist regions in Switzerland. It tallies over 900’000 overnight stays in tourist accomodation per year, and guests’ origins are just as wide-ranging as the region’s offerings and activities.
