District 2452 Governor’s Letter Fellow Rotarians, Another month of our Rotary year has just passed. We are all on the run to execute what we have planned without compromising the quality of the benefits presented to our club members and local communities. It is important to keep in mind that September is Rotary Basic Education and Literacy month. Rotarians are asked to concentrate on educational projects that provide technology, teacher training, and vocational training teams to strengthen the capacity of communities in all the countries of our district. Please remember that key stakeholders in a basic education and literacy project should include school administrators, teachers, school staff, parents of students, and naturally the students. Members of the ministry or department of education are also key stakeholders. Worth highlighting here is one of our mega projects in the district that serves one of the needs for basic education and literacy. It falls under “Lack of resources in schools” and it’s the Water Filtration project. This mega project provides clean water to children in Lebanon’s public schools with the support of local partners and multiple global grants from the Rotary Foundation. As I mentioned in the previous issue, Ghada and I are very excited and rather overwhelmed by the number of activities during September. We will be spending more than twenty days travelling outside our home in Jordan. We shall start our first official club visits in Lebanon, where we will attend our first District Polio Seminar and the first District Membership Seminar both of which take place in Beirut. Later, I shall travel to Mombasa, Kenya to participate in the Reach Out to Africa (ROTA) meeting by invitation from President K.R. (Ravi) Ravindran. During the last week of September, I shall happily have the chance to officially visit my fellow Rotarians in Armenia and Georgia. I will be accompanied by a group of dedicated Rotarians to help provide additional training in these important countries of our district. Amid all of the above, there is a lot of excitement in our family as we are expecting our first granddaughter to come to this world anytime in September! Difficult planning, as you can imagine, mostly for Ghada!! In my continued efforts to encourage our Rotary Clubs to give and to benefit from the Rotary Foundation, I again congratulate the Rotary Club of Beirut, Lebanon on the approval of their global grant application for funding to provide four mobile clinics in Lebanon. It was submitted jointly with RC Villers-la-Ville (D-2170) in the amount of US$ 138,828. Dear friends, I am still not satisfied with the response of our Rotarians to calls from the Rotary International President and from myself to register in My Rotary. Some clubs have achieved our Rotary International and District goals on Rotary Online Tools but unfortunately, many more are still behind. I urge my assistants, club presidents and their teams to do all their utmost to demonstrate the importance of this matter to every Rotarian. Rotary International President’s Letter There was once a strong young man who was offered a job as a woodcutter. He set about his task with energy: The first week, he turned 18 trees into firewood. The second week, he worked just as hard, but was surprised to find he had chopped only 11 trees. The third week, despite working nonstop from morning till night, the number was six, and he went despairingly to the foreman to offer his resignation. \"I am losing my strength. I can no longer cut as many trees as I once could.\" The foreman looked at the young man, who seemed to him in fine health. \"Have you thought of sharpening your ax?\" he asked. \"Sharpen my ax? Who has time to sharpen an ax?\" the young man asked indignantly. \"I have been too busy chopping wood!\" When we aren't making the kind of progress we feel we should be making, the natural response is to redouble our efforts. Sometimes, though, the better response is not to work harder, but to work smarter. Look at your tools. Analyze your processes. Are you directing your resources in the most effective ways? Or are you pouring all your strength into chopping wood with a dull ax? For the last 20 years, we have relentlessly beaten the drum of membership in Rotary. We set goals and launch campaigns, all focused on bringing in more and more members. And yet, our overall numbers remain the same. It is time to sharpen our tools. Instead of focusing on the question, \"How can we bring more members into Rotary?\" we should be asking ourselves, \"How can we add more value to Rotary membership, so that more will join and fewer will leave?\" One way we are doing that is with the new Rotary Global Rewards program, which launched in July. This innovative program allows Rotarians to connect with, and receive discounts and concessions from, businesses and service providers around the world. Individual Rotarians may submit their own business to be included alongside those with which Rotary has already negotiated relationships; the most appropriate offers will be added to the listings. We have also created the option of allowing businesses to return a percentage of their profit on each transaction to our Rotary Foundation, and several companies have already been locked into this part of the scheme. Each month we will update the list with additional offers that we may receive. I urge all of you to try it out by signing up on My Rotary at Rotary.org now. The more Rotarians participate, the stronger, and more beneficial, the program will be. Much more than another loyalty program, Rotary Global Rewards is a new way to benefit from being a Rotarian, and being part of the Rotary network. It is another way to combine business and service. And it is yet another way to add value to Rotary membership. Rotary Basic Education & Literacy Month Basic Education and Literacy Basic Education & Literacy The challenge • Worldwide, 75 million children (41 million of them girls) do not have access to basic education. (World Bank) • Child survival rates jump 40% if girls are educated for five years. (ONE) • Young people who have completed primary education are less than half as likely to contract HIV as those without such an education. Universal primary education would prevent 700,000 cases of HIV each year. (World Bank) • More than 1 in 4 adults cannot read or write, 66% of them women. (End Poverty 2015 Millennium Campaign) What you can do • Develop an adult literacy program that teaches literacy skills to adults. • Send a vocational training team to provide training in curriculum development and reducing gender disparity in education to rural communities. • Consult with education officials to design teacher training and provide the relevant curriculum and supplies for schools. • Sponsor a scholar studying adult education with an emphasis on literacy Rotary Basic Education& LiteracyMonth 3

District News THE ROTARY CLUB OF LIMASSOL 11th August 2015 The Rotary Club of Limassol is preparing a new edition of the book titled “The History of Limassol” by Xenofon Pharmakides, published in Limassol in 1942 which went out of print in the 1950’s. The book is considered by resource. The book will be an anastatic edition and will be enriched with photographs, maps, and an updated annotated bibliography of Limassol with a pre-phase and introduction. The work has been undertaken and supervised by the Limassol Municipal Museum (Archives Department), and the book will be published on hard back and soft back copies. On comple- tion of the re-publication there will be a public presentation of the new version of the book at the Museum Gardens under the hospices of the Minister of Education. A number of books will be presented to each Headmaster of all the Senior Lyceum Schools in Limassol as a donation to the School’s Libraries. District News School For The Deaf In Hebron During the years 2014-2015, the RC of Ramallah was able to develop a $43,230 Global Grant that aims to support a school for the deaf in Hebron City, Palestine. This was done with the RC of Bekkelaget as the international partner and in cooperation with and financial support from D2310, RC of Amman, Amman Capital, Amman-Petra, and RC of Adliya. The main objectives of the project are: 1- Improve the services of the school for children with impaired hearing in Hebron, by providing psycholo- gists and speech therapists with modern tools and machines for Deaf. 2- Doing modifications on the building to meet the needs of disabled children; modify the basement to create spaces for a hearing-testing lab & internal playing area to be suitable for the use of deaf students during the winter time. 3- Providing hearing testing and early diagnosis for communities surrounding the school as well as the communities living within the Hebron governorate. Academic and Vocational Scholarships for Orphans The RC of Amman Jerash sponsors 2 University students and 2 vocational students to cover the full cost of their education fees. This project is executed in cooperation with Al Aman Fund for Orphan’s Future (an organization under the auspices of HRH Queen Rania of Jordan). This project currently provides a university scholarship to 2 orphan female students studying medicine and pharmaceuticals. It also provides 2 students a scholarship for vocational studies. The vocational students are on a one year program and thus 2 new students are chosen every year. The university students are being sponsored until their graduation after which 2 new students will be chosen. This project is under plans for expansion to increase the beneficiaries to 6 students. 6
