Trustee Chair’s Message Ian H.S. Riseley Trustee Chair 2022-23 September 2022 Ian H.S. Riseley One of my favorite books, A Short History of Nearly Everything by Bill Bryson, muses on the creation of the universe and how a tiny speck of it we call Earth went from being a fiery ball with seas of molten rock to the lush green-and-blue home we know today. Bryson’s argument is that it is a miracle that we — our planet and our species — have survived. “We enjoy not only the privilege of existence,” Bryson writes, “but also the singular ability to appreciate it and even, in a multitude of ways, to make it better.” We are fortunate to be able to read his words or any others. And we are fortunate to be part of an organization that is making our world a better place by helping those who can’t read them. There are an estimated 773 million illiterate adults — most of them women — who can’t read these words or write their own name. They are at a clear disadvantage in life, with limited opportunities to work. And this situation isn’t their fault. Rotary has not forgotten them. District 2452 in action Community Service Project - Jordan On Saturday, 20/8/2022, the Rotary Club of Amman Petra inaugurated the Petra Club for Children in Al-Jofeh area in the Dead Sea, in addition to the adjacent garden, parts of which the club members rehabilitated through painting its concrete furniture in bright colors that attract children. This club was established within Al Kafrin Social Center of The Jordan Hashemite Fund for Human Development / JOHD, and is the first of our joint activities after signing an MOU to serve the local area in joint initiatives. The Club was inaugurated under the patronage of the Governor of the Southern Shouneh District, and in the presence of officials of The Jordan Hashemite Fund as well as representatives of the local community and various civil authorities. The Rotary Club of Amman Petra is establishing clubs for children in less fortunate areas in the Kingdom in cooperation with local and national associations by providing furniture, books and games that are donated by our club members and their families. Following the opening ceremony, fifty school bags were distributed to students in the area that have been identified by the center. Another fifty bags were also donated in the Sweimeh area in cooperation with the Dar Al- Karam Charitable Society, with which the club previously cooperated in implementing many initiatives targeting children and families in need within Sweimeh.
