6 | MISS HELLENE 2014 A Male's Perspective The journey that the 11 proud contestants have gone through during Miss Hellene 2014 is one that I will most likely never fully understand. The pride they feel when representing their beliefs, the courage they show when they step out of their comfort zones to attempt something new, something they have never tried before is a privilege reserved for the lucky ladies that take part in every Miss Hellene pageant. From a male perspective, what sets Miss Hellene apart from other such events is that these girls are taking part in something much more than just a beauty contest. The 11 finalists were selected from a group of girls, based on their involvement in the community and several other criteria. These finalists have all worked hard for the last six months to raise funds that contribute directly towards the NAHYSOSA Bursary Fund. It is a requirement for each contestant to raise a minimum amount towards the bursary fund, be it via sponsorship, advertising or any other means. This group of ladies has however gone far beyond the call of duty and have excelled in every manner! Be it their contributions to the fund, the friendships they have made, the fun days, photo-shoots and rehearsals, they have made this a pleasure of an event to be a part of, and I hope they feel the same. This evening is now all about them, the end to a long journey and the night they have been waiting for. Their hard work has paid off into what will surely be an amazing event, the result of which will be the crowning of the new Miss Hellene for 2014! For me personally, I simply hope that all 11 ladies have grown through this journey and have a learnt a small part about contributing to their community while still being able to push for their dreams and trying something new. Good luck ladies, and remember that you have all won and have all made a difference to someone’s life. Michalis Scholiadis NAHYSOSA President 2014

8 | MISS HELLENE 2014 Miss Helene 2012 Thalia Kritzas My time as Miss Helene has been nothing short of INCREDIBLE! During my two-year reign as Miss Hellene my motto has been: ‘Keep the Hellenic flame burning’ I held this motto as I believed in keeping alive the burning passion within each and every young Hellene so that the greatness of our heritage and culture can live on for many years to come. Creating awareness about Hellenism is something I have strived for because Hellenism runs in my blood and I too want my children and grandchildren to one day feel the love I feel in my heart when I’m dancing that Zeimbekiko or the pride I have in my bones when I’m cheering HELLAS OLE OLE! Why my pride you might ask? Well to name just a few, Aristotle, Demoracy, Alexander the Great, Pythagoras, Mitropanos. And yes, I still hold onto that fine day in 2004 when Charisteas led us to victory in the European Cup! Throughout my reign as Miss Hellene I paid attention to the small things and used them as an opportunity to help out in my community. My sash was not always needed for me to lend a helping hand and doing those little favours was what I enjoyed most. To have more of an impact in my community, I joined the Hellenic Students Association of Cape Town (HSA Cape Town) in 2013 and together with the help of the committee, I organised a fashion show as my Miss Hellene event. This event, as all NAHYSOSA events, raised funds for the NAHYSOSA Bursary Fund. It was the most successful to be hosted by any affiliate of NAHYSOSA around South Africa in 2013 and what was most important to me was that people were made aware of the love that young Hellenes have for their community and culture. I wish the next young lady who will receive the honourable title of Miss Hellene all the very best in her reign and I believe that she too will keep the Hellenic flame burning!

10 | MISS HELLENE 2014 Irini Moutzouris

MISS HELLENE 2014 | 11“Never let success get to your head but never let failure get to your heart.”I am a 19 year old girl from the small town of Klerksdorp, with a love for art, culture andlanguage and currently studying in Pretoria. I chose to study education because I feelthat, in life, your tangible assets can easily be taken away from you but your knowledge issomething that will last forever.I entered Miss Hellene because the money raised contributes to the NAHYSOSAbursary fund, making the purpose one that is very close to my heart. My Greekheritage as well as the strong morals and values that run through my family haveshaped me into the young Greek lady that I am today. In the past, I have had thehonour of representing Gauteng and South Africa, but an even greater honour wouldbe to represent the Hellenic Youth of South Africa, as that is where my pride lies.Should I be privileged enough to be crowned the new Miss Hellene, I would use it as a platformto become more involved within the different Greek communities. As a representative of theHellenic youth, I will strive to live up to the only word that describes us Greeks, ‘philotimo’.By doing so, I wish to become the best role model I, Irini Moutzouris, can possibly be withinmy community.

MISS HELLENE 2014 | 21I was born and raised in the city of Jacarandas and am currentIy on route to becomea Charted Accountant at the University of Pretoria. 19 years ago, I was blessed withboth Greek and Cypriot blood and have grown up with a strong Greek heritage.I have looked up to the Miss Hellene title holders for many years and it was what thepageant stood for that drew me to enter. Not only does Miss Hellene aim to raisefunds for different initiatives, but I believe that it is her duty to bring about a senseof togetherness within a community and guide the youth to follow in her footsteps.Something many people don’t know about me is that I’m a Greek dancing teacherfor children between the ages of 5 and 16. This is another platform in which Ishow my passion of bringing the Hellenic youth of South Africa together and toensure that they have the opportunity to gain from Hellenism in the same way I did. There are two sayings which I try to live by, the first being, “I aspire to inspire beforeI expire” and the second, “If your dreams don’t scare you, they’re not big enough.”

This year has definitely been a year of growth andchange, and I decided to enter this pageant because I feel that it uplifts and helpsdevelop young women, and it is such a privilege to be a part of this wonderful experience! Not only is it a bonus from a cultural and heritage perspective, but it is also applicableto the role that young women of the 21st century have to play. If I have the honour ofwinning this title, I will certainly use it to the benefit of uplifting the youth of our beautifulrainbow nation, especially in terms of education, as I believe that with a solid education, anything can be accomplished! I would also like to create more awareness about thisPageant - every young lady with Hellenic decent should take on this experience, you canonly truly understand the true essence of it once you are a part of something this special!Always push your boundaries and never set limits for yourself, because you’ll never knowhow great something can be! “Self confidence is not taught or learnt; it is earned by surpassing your own self-limitations.” - John Raynolds

I am a fun-loving and bubbly person, an artist, a fashion lover with a creative mind and a people’s person.I grew up in a small town where I had little exposure to the Greek community, cultureand language. I was very excited this year in University where I have had the opportunityto meet lots of Greek people and to become involved in some of the events organised byNAHYSOSA. I have been amazed by how welcoming and warm this ‘koinotita’ has been.It was the feeling of belonging that drew me to enter Miss Hellene and I am so proudto be a part of an event that brings together the Hellenic youth. I have had an amazingexperience thus far and am so grateful for the beautiful people I have met. I am lookingforward to growing these relationships and savouring every step of this journey.

I am 19 years old and currently in my second year atthe University of Pretoria studying a double major in philosophy and English.I believe that there is beauty in everything and I try to live an optimistic life, just to keep things interesting. I’ve been given this life for a reason and Iplan on making a difference in someone’s life with every opportunity I get.I wanted to do Miss Hellene to be able to give back and to show my gratitudetowards NAHYSOSA. Miss Hellene is a fundraising event that allows students ofHellenic descent the opportunity to have a tertiary education. I was one of thestudents that they helped this year and I know first hand what it feels like toget financial help for my education. I knew that If I applied for Miss Hellene I couldstand a chance at changing the lives of others, just as NAHYSOSA has changed mine.Thank you for this incredible experience and good luck to my beautiful fellow contestants.

MISS HELLENE 2014 | 45I’m just a girl - I just happen to be a fiery, determined Greek one. If youindicate that success might elude me - it will spur me on like nothing on earth.Miss Hellene is one such challenge, but not just a competitive challenge, but rather a challenge to find true altruism within myself, think of othersbefore I think of myself, and open my eyes to the hard reality out there- the reality that others need help and love - and that I truly have so much to give.To create awareness of the actual difficulties that people face - people within ourvery own community. A challenge to give of myself. What an opportunity! Miss Hellenehas been a beautiful and life-changing experience that I’m grateful to be a part of.
