ประวตั คิ วามเป็ นมา สุรินทร์เป็นหนึ่งในจังหวัดชายแดนของภาคอีสาน ตอนล่าง หรือ “อสี านใต”้ ที่มปี ระวตั ิศาสตร์ความเป็น มายาวนานจงั หวดั หนงึ่ สนั นษิ ฐานวา่ พน้ื ทอี่ นั เปน็ ทต่ี ง้ั เมืองสุรินทร์มีชุมชนอาศัยอยู่เม่ือประมาณ 2,000 ปี ล่วงมาแล้ว จากสภาพภมู ิศาสตร์ที่มอี าณาเขตตอ่ เนื่อง กับพื้นท่ีที่เคยเป็นอาณาจักรขอมโบราณ ท�ำให้เมือง สุรินทร์ไดร้ บั วัฒนธรรมขอมมาโดยตลอดตัง้ แต่ในช่วงพุทธศตวรรษที่ 12 เปน็ ตน้ มา ต่อมา เมอ่ื อาณาจกั รขอมเสอ่ื มอำ� นาจลง เมอื งดงั กลา่ วกถ็ กู ทง้ิ รา้ งไปเปน็ เวลานาน จนกระทงั่ ราว ปี พ.ศ. 2260 ในสมัยอยุธยาตอนปลายชาวพ้ืนเมอื งของเมืองอตั ปือแสนแป แควน้ จ�ำปา ศกั ด์ิ ซึ่งในขณะน้ันเปน็ ดินแดนของไทย ท่เี รยี กตัวเองวา่ “ส่วย” หรอื “กยู ” หรอื “กวย” ไดพ้ ากนั อพยพขา้ มล�ำนำ�้ โขง มาต้งั ชุมชนท่ีเมอื งตา่ งๆ ในแถบภมู ภิ าคนี้ รวมถึงบา้ นอจั จะ ปะนึ่งและบา้ นกุดปะไท ในเขตอ�ำเภอสังขะ และอ�ำเภอศขี รภูมิ จงั หวดั สุรนิ ทร์ คนเหล่านี้ มีความสามารถในการจบั ชา้ งป่า และน�ำมาฝกึ ฝนไว้ใชง้ านเปน็ อยา่ งมาก จึงเปน็ ตน้ ก�ำเนดิ ของตำ� นาน “เมืองช้าง” ของจงั หวดั สุรนิ ทรน์ น่ั เอง ต่อมาในปี พ.ศ. 2306 หลวงสุรินทรภักดี (เชียงปุม) หัวหน้าหมู่บ้านเมืองที ไดย้ า้ ยหมบู่ า้ นมาตง้ั อยทู่ บ่ี รเิ วณคปู ระทาย ซง่ึ เปน็ ทตี่ งั้ เมอื งสรุ นิ ทรใ์ นปจั จบุ นั เนอื่ งจากเปน็ บรเิ วณทมี่ ชี ยั ภมู เิ หมาะสมมกี ำ� แพงคา่ ยคลู อ้ มรอบ 2 ชนั้ และมแี หลง่ นำ้� อดุ มสมบรู ณ์ เหมาะ แกก่ ารประกอบอาชพี และอยอู่ าศยั ตอ่ มาพระเจา้ อยหู่ วั พระทน่ี ง่ั สรุ ยิ ามรนิ ทรโ์ ปรดเกลา้ ฯ ให้ยกฐานะข้นึ เปน็ “เมืองประทายสมนั ต์” และหลวงสุรนิ ทรภักดีไดเ้ ลือ่ นบรรดาศกั ด์เิ ป็น พระยาสรุ ินทรภ์ กั ดศี รีณรงค์จางวาง เป็นเจ้าเมืองปกครองเมอื งประทายสมันต์ ในปี พ.ศ. 2329 พระบาทสมเดจ็ พระพทุ ธยอดฟา้ จฬุ าโลกมหาราช รชั กาลที่ 1 ไดท้ รงพระกรณุ าโปรด เกลา้ ฯ ใหเ้ ปล่ียนช่อื “เมืองประทายสมันต์” เป็น “เมืองสรุ ินทร”์ ตามสรอ้ ยบรรดาศักด์ิ ของเจา้ เมอื งในขณะนน้ั เมอื งสรุ นิ ทรม์ เี จา้ เมอื งปกครองสบื เชอื้ สายกนั มารวม 11 คน จนถงึ ปี พ.ศ. 2451 มีการเปลยี่ นแปลงระบบบรหิ ารราชการแผ่นดินเป็นแบบมณฑลเทศาภิบาล “เมืองสุรินทร์” จึงเปล่ียนเป็น “จังหวัดสุรินทร์” และทางกรุงเทพฯ ได้แต่งต้ังพระกรุง ศรบี ุรรี กั ษ์ (สุม สมุ านนท)์ มาดำ� รงตำ� แหนง่ เปน็ ข้าหลวงประจ�ำจงั หวัด หรือผู้ว่าราชการ จังหวดั เปน็ คนแรก 4

Story of Surin Surin is one of the bordering provinces in South Isaan of Thailand that has a long history of its own. It is believed that people had colonized this area more than 2,000 years ago. As the city is adjacent to former Ancient Khmer Empire, Surin had been influenced in its cultures since 12th B.E. After the fall of khmer Empire, the city had been abandoned until around the year 1717. In late Ayuthaya Era, some locals from At Pue San Pae of Cham Pa Sak which was belonged under Thai Kingdom calling themselves “Suay” or “Kui”, migrated across khong river and settled down around this area. Including Ban At Ja Pa Nueng and Ban Kud Pa Tai in Sangkha District and Si Khoraphum District of Surin. These people are capable of catching and training wild elephants. This is the beginning of the Legend of Surin the City of Elephant today. Later in 1763, Luang Surinthara Pakdi (Chiang Pum), head of Muang Tee Village, relocated his village to Ban Khu Pra Tai or Surin province today. This place is a strategic location for both military and livelihood terms. Later, the king Suriy- amarin ordered to promote the town to “Pra Tai Saman” and Luang Surinthara Pakdi to Phraya Surin Pakdi Si Narong Chang Wang who is in charge of Pra Tai Saman city. In 1786, King Rama 1st ordered to rename the city to “Muang Surin” after the position name of the governor of the city at that time. Surin had 11 descendant governor until 1908, with the changes in the country administrative rules, Muang Surin changed to Surin Province. Phra Krungsri Burirak (Sum Sumanont) was the first governor of Surin from then on. 5

อนุสาวรยี ์ พระยาสรุ นิ ทรภกั ดศี รณี รงคจ์ างวาง สร้างเม่อื พ.ศ. 2527 เพื่อเป็นท่รี ะลกึ ถึง ผู้สร้างเมืองคนแรก ซ่ึงเป็นบุคคลส�ำคัญอย่างยิ่งใน ประวตั ศิ าสตรข์ องเมอื งสรุ นิ ทร์ อนสุ าวรยี ฯ์ นตี้ งั้ อยู่ ทที่ างเขา้ เมอื งทางดา้ นทศิ ใต้ ซงึ่ เคยเปน็ กำ� แพงเมอื ง ชน้ั ในของตวั เมอื งสรุ นิ ทร์ รปู ปน้ั หลอ่ ดว้ ยทองเหลอื ง รมดำ� สงู 2.2 เมตร มอื ขวาถอื ของา้ ว แสดงถงึ ความ เกง่ กลา้ สามารถของทา่ นในการบงั คบั ชา้ งศกึ สะพาย ดาบคู่อยู่บนหลังอันหมายถึงความเป็นนักรบผู้กล้า หาญ ปัจจบุ ันเป็นท่เี คารพสักการะของชาวสรุ นิ ทร์ ใกล้กับอนุสาวรีย์พระยาสุรินทรภักดีศรีณรงค์ จางวาง มีอนุสาวรีย์กวยกับช้างเพื่อระลึกถึงชาว กวย 5 ทา่ น คอื เชยี งปุม (พระยาสรุ ินทรภักดศี รี ณรงคจ์ างวาง) แหง่ บา้ นโคกเมอื งที ตากะจะและ เชียงขันแห่งบ้านปราสาทส่ีเหล่ียม โคกล�ำดวน ใหญ่ เชียงฆะแหง่ บา้ นดงยาง (โคกอัจจะ) และ เชยี งสแี หง่ บา้ นกดุ หวาย ซง่ึ ชาวกวยทงั้ 5 ทา่ นได้ ชว่ ยขนุ นางสองพน่ี อ้ งจบั ชา้ งเผอื ก ซง่ึ แตกโรงหนี มาจากกรงุ ศรอี ยธุ ยาและนำ� สง่ ชา้ งเผอื กกลบั คนื กรงุ ศรอี ยุธยา จนได้รบั โปรดเกล้าฯ บรรดาศักดิ์ ให้เปน็ หลวงทัง้ 5 ท่าน ปกครองผูค้ นในเขตของ ตนขนึ้ กบั เมอื งพมิ าย จงั หวดั สรุ นิ ทรไ์ ดท้ ำ� พธิ เี ปดิ อนสุ าวรยี แ์ หง่ นี้ เมอื่ วนั เสารท์ ่ี 13 เมษายน 2528 14

PhrayaSurinPhakdiSriNarongChangWangMonument wasbuiltin1974tocommemoratethefirstfounderofSurinCity. Elephant Study Center Is situated between Moo 9 and Moo 13, Ban TaKlang. Tambon Kra Pho, Tha Tum District. The village areas cover rice fields and groove wood interspersed with sparse forests being suitable for raising elephants. The villagers were originally Suay or Kuy or Kuay people who were very capable of catching and training elephants. Unlike people in the north of Thailand who train the elephants to work for them but people of Ban Ta Klang raise elephants and treat them as family members.
