SURAH ‫الطارق‬ The Night Traveller 86 ACTIVITY BOOK



SHOOTING STARS 1 induction In the first verse, Allah takes an oath by the stars. The Arabs used to say that they claim to know things because the shooting stars told them. Is it true? Do we really know the secrets of the universe? What do we actually know about stars anyway? Let us find out! lesson outcome Students will be able to: 1. Describe the nature and characteristics of the shooting stars. 2. Explain the relevance of stars as the objects of oath in this surah. 2

materials 1. Flour. 2. Cacao powder 3. Big plastic bowl 4. Small stones about 5. A high-resolution smartphone 5 cm diameter camera (preferably with slow-motion features). 3

instructions: 3. Get the smartphone ready to record a video. 4. Drop the small rocks from about 1 metre above into the bowl. 1. Pour the flour into the plastic bowl. 2. Pour in the cacao powder to cover the flour. 5. Repeat the experiment. 6. Playback the video in slow motion and observe how the cacao powder (outer layer) and flour (inner layer) are displaced upon impact. 4

LESSONS 1. The shooting stars used to be the scapegoat of the Arabs. They say that the stars help them to predict the future. 2. So, Allah disproves their claims. Not only they do not have any knowledge of the future. They, in fact, do not have sufficient knowledge of the stars themselves. So, how can they claim to know the future when do not even know about the things that are in front of their eyes? PENETRATING LIGHT 2 induction Previously, we have learned about the shooting stars. In verse 3, Allah describes al-Ṭāriq as a star whose light can penetrate the darkness of night. LESSONS 1. Allah strikes a simile between the light of the stars with the supervision of the guardian angels. 2. The light of the stars can penetrate the darkness. CAMERA OBSCURA 3 induction In verse 4, Allah reminds us that everyone has their own “cameras” that are supervising their every move. Did you know? 4 WATER FOUNTAIN induction In verse 6, Allah informs us that humans are created from a spurting liquid. How does that liquid spurt? 5 HUMAN BONES induction In verse 7, Allah describes the source of the liquid that makes up man. The liquid is said to have stemmed from the backbone and the ribcage.
