Example: I heard a melodious song on the radio. ➢ Use the word an before singular nouns or adjectives that begin with a vowel sound. Example: I saw an exciting movie last night. Exceptions to the Rule : Remember, an is used when a word begins with a vowel sound. Sometimes a word can begin with a vowel, but start with a consonant sound. Example: Inches are a unit of measurement on a ruler. ➢ The word unit begins with the consonant y-sound (yoo-nit), so you would use the article a. It particularizes a person or a thing and gives a sense of certainty. ➢ It is used when we talk of something in particular or specific. ➢ It is used when we talk of something unique. Example 1. The boy welcomed the Chief Guest. 2. A boy welcomed the Chief Guest. In the first sentence, the boy is one particular boy who we have spoken or heard of before. In the second sentence, boy is not important and could be any one of the boys from the school, so we write it as ‘a boy’ Note how the Chief Guest in both sentences is ‘the’ Chief Guest because he is a special invitee and there is only one Chief Guest in the gathering. Nouns are names of person, place, animals, things, or qualities, feeling and ideas. Common Nouns and Proper Nouns LEARNER’S HUB Common Nouns Common Nouns are called ‘common’ because they do not have any special names of their own. ➢ Words that are common nouns do not begin with a capital letter unless they begin a sentence. Proper Nouns A Proper Noun is a special name given to a particular person, place or thing. It is not common. Example: A dog is any dog whereas ‘Champ’ is the name of a particular dog. ‘dog’ is a common noun but ‘Champ’ is a proper noun. ➢ A proper noun always begins with a capital letter. ➢ A common noun can be changed into a proper noun if we give it a name.
