ACCRINGTON STANLEY Community “The First Team Players do go into the local schools on a regular basis and we are striving to do more like any small club and it’s important as we both need to support each other. The importance of youth development can never be taken for granted. A lot can depend on the strength of character of the young players themselves. We have gradually integrated the U18's who we earmarked as potential professionals, by bringing them up to train with the First Team on a regular basis. This hopefully gives them a sense of the standard required and the type of culture they will have to contend with.” Challenges/Ambitions “Our immediate challenge is to remain as a Football League Club. We are trying to introduce new initiatives to encourage more fans through the gate on match days. We are also in the process of trying to become a Category 3 status Academy which would also help the club with funding, recruitment and local projects to improve the ground and training ground. Hopefully this will attract new investment to the club, which is the Board's objective for the longer term.”10 Issue 47

WIMBORNE TOWN WIMBORNE TOWN First established in 1878, Wimborne Town FC was a founder member of the South Hampshire and Dorset Football Association in 1878. They won their first silverware in 1913 when they claimed the Dorset Minor Cup for the only time in their existence and have continued to build an illustrious history since then. Undoubtedly, one of their greatest triumphs in their more recent past came in 1992 when they managed to win the FA Vase whilst they reached the First Round Proper of the FA Cup for the first time in the 1982-83 season. The current group of players will be keen to add to these successes in the coming years. This time around their first team to put together a steady campaign, finishing with a league record of having won 16, drawn 7 and lost 19 of their 42 matches. This saw them claim a safe mid- table position with 55 points on the board. This should provide them with a good platform upon which to build as they look ahead to the 2014- 15 campaign. So long as they are able to retain their current group of players and perhaps make one or two quality additions they should be able to claim a higher league finish. A particular highlight of the team’s play last year was the commitment they made to playing an attacking brand of football. In the league alone they managed to score 78 goals at a rate of nearly 2 per game. This certainly meant that any supporters attending their matches were well entertained and should encourage more42 Issue 47

WIMBORNE TOWN of their local community to get behind the side. Playing an attacking style of play can also help players to enjoy representing the club which will help them to build a quality squad. The club’s attention will now have turned towards preparing for the 2014-15 campaign and their Manager Steve Cuss recently told Stour and Avon Magazine of the clubs plans saying, “Gaining promotion from the Wessex League is a big step and it takes most clubs time to adapt, and that includes Wimborne Town.” “In training and in our preparation for games, the aim is always for our players to go out on the pitchand win, I love being manager here and I can’t wait forthe season to begin.”One of the standout features of Wimborne’s set-up isthe superb youth section that they have in place. WIMBORNE TOWN It is important for any club to be able to produce their own talent, particularly in the current financial climate. Coaching staff involved with the youth teams are confident that they have a number of players with the potential to go on and represent the team at senior level. In order to help their youngsters make the sometimes difficult transition into the senior game, Wimborne Town also have a reserve side running. This allows them to give players experience of adult level football even if they are not yet considered ready for first team action. Another benefit of having more than one side is that it allows the first XI to benefit from far greater strength in depth. If they are ever left short on numbers through injury or suspension they have the option of calling players up with a limited amount of disruption. WITHAM TOWN We play an important role in the community here. We’ve got a good rapport with the local services and the local MP and we look to provide anyone looking to play the game with a chance to do so. We’ve got a ladies team which has good numbers and they haven’t had a bad season either, managing to consolidate in the league they’re in with a view to improving next season.” Challenges/Ambitions “The biggest challenge we face is on the financial side of things trying to balance the books. With getting promoted there is going to be more travelling and some players will be looking for more many so it’s important to keep a check on things. We’ve been in a lot of debt previously and we’re not going to let it go back to that. Our first ambition next season is to avoid relegation. Hopefully we’ll be able to build from there, developing our ground and creating an infrastructure behind the scenes to allow the playing side of things to flourish. To finish, I’d like to add that I can’t thank the people that work very hard at the club who give up their time for nothing. Without them we wouldn’t be able to achieve half of what we have.”50 Issue 47
