I used to hate (or should Isay, really dislike) history. It was my worst subjectin school.I didn't see any usefor remembering whodiscovered what country, which countries wereinvolved in which war,and who was president, and which nations wereallies and which wereenemies, and why, andespecially all the datesinvolved.

I used to think, “Who cares? That's in the past. That's why it's called history. Quit digging it up.”But oh, was I wrong.Yes, we should live inthe present and notdwell on the past. But history is sharedwith us as a gift, so wecan appreciate our

present and not have tospend so much of ourpresent time “reinventingthe wheel” so to speak. We can learn so much, and prevent history fromrepeating itself, if we'llpay attention to thelessons. But if we don't learn fromthe mistakes of others,we may have to learn the“hard way” by makingthem ourselves.

The Bible is a perfect example of how we canlearn from others. Their trials and triumphs weredocumented and preserved for our benefit.

In the process of learningfrom their mistakes (oranyone's), let us becareful not to judge.Unless you've walked intheir proverbial shoes, youmay need to don them fora few miles to fully learnthe lesson – to have moreunderstanding, gentleness, and compassion. But I had to learn the“hard way.”

Apparently, withoutrealizing it, I'd beenjudging the weaknessof others (not just thosein the Bible, but in morerecent history and in thepresent day). For instance, I didn't usedto understand people whosuffered from allergies(until I developed somemyself).I didn't understand howsomething so “minor” as

stomach pain could sodebilitate someone (untilI experienced ulcers). And historically, biblically,I didn't understand how inthe world people could sinso grievously – whetherthey were deceived, or adeceiver, or someone whodenied the Lord – I justdidn't understand how theycould go from being liftedso high to falling so hard(that is, until I was similarlydeceived). Once liftedhigh, I fell so hard.

Those who succumbedto peer pressure, fear, greed – all were atrociousto me (until I experiencedtheir weakness). Then I was able to quitjudging them. But certainly I neverdreamed I'd ever exhibitthe pride or rebellion ofLucifer!Oh really? You guessed it,I had my own version.

All were quite humbling.Perhaps exactly whatwas needed. But getting back topresent day …Oh, let us not judge, but rather humbly learnfrom mistakes – thoseof others and our own.By the grace of Christ,we can learn muchfrom our rich history, especially HIS story.
