This is the day when lively consumers can (and should) focus onsupporting their local businesses. In reality, every day is for smallbusinesses. Local Umbrella Media’s primary mission is the sup-port of local communities and this includes supporting smallbusinesses whenever we spend money. We encourage you to start in your local neighborhood andcontinue throughout your local city and county. Hopefully we willall do this every day of the year, especially during the Holidays. THERE ARE OTHER THINGS WE CAN ALL DO TO HELP OUR COMMUNITIES AND LOCAL BUSINESSES BESIDES ONLY SHOPPING: 1. Make a commitment to refer other businesses and community services to your friends through word-of- mouth, and on social media. 2. Volunteer. There are many places that can always use volunteers. 3. Give to the needy. This is something else we should strive to do every day and not just when it’s a national holiday. Giving to people or animals in need is one of the best things we can do. Check with your local community for places accepting volunteers or donation. 4. Donate goods. Go through your storage space and “shop” for items that can be donated. Check local neigh- borhood sites like Nextdoor® for people and business owners who help others and accept donated items. 5. Consider local restaurants for dining in and also for delivery. If you don’t plan on cooking a holiday meal check with your favorite local restaurant for delivery or takeout specials. Many of them offer something and you could make a difference in them being able to provide for their families and friends. As much as we love the ease and convenience of shopping through Amazon and other e-commerce websites, there is almost always a local alternative. By Robin Clarke, contributing writer Summer’s tomatoes have been sliced or canned, the last few squashes and eggplants picked and grilled, sautéed or steamed, cucumbers devoured in salads - and boy was that all great! Now as autumn returns to the garden, there are a few options in this transition before “winter” hits. First of all, since San Diego can still get pretty warm before next January, and we don’t have frost to worry about, you could probably still grow some late tomatoes successfully. Just look for types with shorter fruiting cycles, and enjoy tomatoes through Thanksgiving! And just to tempt you with that idea, I’ve included my favorite recipe for Tomato Jam. This stuff is delicious on almost anything and definitely gives ketchup a run for its money. Mark Bittman’s Tomato Jam Makes 2 small jars with a little left over 1.5 pounds ripe plum tomatoes, cored and coarsely chopped 1 cup sugar 2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lime juice 1 tablespoon fresh grated or minced ginger 1 tea- spoon ground cumin 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves 1 teaspoon salt 1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes or cayenne  1. Combine all ingredients in a heavy medium saucepan, Bring to a boil over medium heat, stir- ring often. 2. Reduce heat and simmer, stirring occasionally, until mixture has consistency of thick jam, about 1 hour 15 minutes. Taste and adjust seasoning, then pour into hot, sterilized jam jars, screw the lids on and turn the jars upside down to cool completely. Planting Season Transition One of the best things about the College Area Community Garden is, in fact, our vibrant garden community. Recently I had to go out of state for a few days and Owen, our new volunteer garden coordinator, offered to restore my spent boxes and amend the soil for me. Wow! Yes please. Here’s what he did in each 4’ x 8’ raised box: Weeded the area, added fresh soil mixed with 1/3 of the soil already in the box. Added a layer of compost.  Amended the soil with 4 cups gypsum, 4 cups granulated organic fertilizer, ½ of a 5 gallon bucket peat moss, ½  bucket vermiculite, ½ bucket mulch. The garden does this as part of my very affordable yearly lease fee. What to Plant for Fall There are lots of good plant guides available, but I like the one from the Ecology Center (theecologycenter.com), which was sent to all the gardeners recently by our garden President Henry Bertram. Their handy guide for Sept/Oct in San Diego includes brassicas like broccoli and cauliflower, carrots, beets, leafy greens like lettuce, kale and chard, garlic and strawberries. So, there’s a fall bounty to enjoy next, especially with that lovely rich soil!    I hope you will come visit our College Area Community Garden soon.
