RANDOLPH COUNTY EVOLVES WITH THE TIMES LIBRARIES ARE MUCH MORE THAN SHELVES FULL OF BOOKS Communities evolve. Children's Room What communities need from their public institutions in one generation may be something different in another generation, or even a few years. As the community evolves so does Randolph County Public Library (RCPL) system to meet the needs of the community. Though offering magazines, (e-) books, audiobooks and DVDs are still a top priority, the library also wishes to bring theoretical knowledge together with a more hands-on approach. The library offers more than historians as a way to more fully interact with the resources it provides. For example, there are dozens of cookbooks available amongst all the branches for healthy eating. But what happens when you have questions about certain foods or the preparation method? Sponsored by the Margaret C. Taylor Memorial Culinary Arts Collection, the library offered two 5-class, hands-on cooking series, which went on to win a prestigious state award, in late 2016 and early 2017, that saw phenomenal interest when it debuted — registration filled up within 30 minutes of opening! Immersive programs can also be found in the children's rooms throughout the county. The RCPL children's services staff is crafting opportunities for families to learn together. The Asheboro branch provides educational kits for children to check out with their library cards, including yoga mats, ukuleles and hands-on STEAM kits. All-inclusive Family Programs Photography courtesy of SavvyBPhotography.com Franklinville branches offer a seed library for patrons to “borrow” seeds during the growing season. The Liberty branch incorporates nature science into their programs through cultivating a community pollinator garden. It also hosts EcoExplore, a citizen science program for children grades K-8 where children can check out a backpack that includes a bug jar, binoculars and a camera. This also extends to programs offered, all of which are free! When planning family programming, each RCPL branch takes into consideration the needs of the youngest patrons, striving to go above and beyond early literacy. Cooking classes, 3D printing parties, slime labs, and take-home crafts are paired with more traditional children's room offerings. These interactive activities reinforce lessons taught during story times and book clubs. Adult Department The adult department hosts speakers who have lived during pivotal moments in history to tell about experiences that we consider the past, but are in fact more recent. Both John McGlohon, who photographed the top of the Hiroshima atomic bomb mushroom cloud, and Dr. Zev Harel, survivor of three Nazi concentration camps, including Auschwitz, enthralled crowds of well over 300 people eager to hear world history firsthand. The library also offers opportunities to hear from famous speakers through the Sunset Signature Series that is co-sponsored by the Friends of the Library, Heart of NC Visitors Bureau, and the City of Asheboro. The library has featured the renowned Elizabeth Smart, telling of her RandolphLiving.com 15

Along with offering books, the mobile library has free Wi-Fi available for those who want to use the internet. The RCPL considered that a lack of easy access to a library card could be a determent to visiting the library. There is a beautiful path through the rocks that lead to a sandy white beach for swimming and snorkeling. British Virgin Islands Made up of more than 60 islands. BVI visitors will love the pristine palm-fringed beaches, rugged peaks and rich vegetation. While some islands are uninhabited and designated as national parks, you may still find an open bar & grill to have a drink and a burger or wahoo sandwich. Watson relates that \"Naomi Wise, a little orphan girl, was being brought up by Squire Adams, a gent who had a pretty good name in the community as a morally decent human being. \"Omie\" (as she is often referred to), however, was seeing a ne'er-do-well named John Lewis, who had a reputation of being mean. A variety of renditions of the ballad exist, but one of the most popular (and well known) was recorded by Doc Watson.
