UKS UNDERGROUND “ ALT MAG | #01 ELCOME TO TEEN SPIRIT, TERRI! As the cover girl of our first printed issue, we want to really get to know you. So lets start from the beginning..To be honest i don’t really remember that much frommy childhood or maybe I subconsciously chose toforget as it wasn’t the happiest time. My mum anddad went through a difficult and ugly divorce andme and my sister saw and heard a lot of things weshouldn’t have at that age. This has affected mysister more than me however i think this has mademe a better and stronger person. The whole situationjust shows that nothing is forever... Your world canbe turned upside down and inside out. Looking backi have learnt alot from this, and one of the morals itry to stick by is ‘treat people how you would like tobe treated’ and enjoy life as much as you can withthe people that love and support you. That’s a good way to look at life. Do you think you’reat the point in your life where you’ve found yourself?Im not sure if I have really found myself as I’m alwaysstriving to be better as a person. I am continuallytrying to be the perfect version of me and as you allknow, no one is perfect, we all have our flaws andinsecurities. I feel after recent events in my life thatI can now be who I want to be and I am now able toput more time and effort into what I really want todo. At the minute I am really trying hard to push TheChaos Dolls as far as I can, we are now a year oldand have achieved so much already but I would liketo continue to grow. “IF YOU HAD ONE SUPER POWER WHAT WOULD IT BE AND WHY? POWER OF PERSUASION SO I COULD GET MY OWN WAY!
BFRREOAMTHUINNGIC, AONRGNLQE UGEREINNDTIONGFIRBEADASS Most of the UK alt scene have probably come across you in publications and on social media, but do you think they have seen the real Terri Altilar? I hope so, as i’m a firm believer that first impressions last and I also believe that too much ego can ruin the talent... Theres so much backstabbing and bitching in this industry I truly don’t know why we cant all stick together. I’m the type of girl that if I’m upset everyone knows about it, and if I’m happy, again everyone knows about it. In other words, I wear my heart on my sleeve. Sometimes this can be bad but I’d rather be like this than hide my emotions. This way everyone knows what they’re going to get as I’m so open and honest. Any time anyone sees me, I can assure you this is the real me. I’m a shit liar!

UKS UNDERGROUND TS. Going back now..When did the ALT MAG | #01 magic happen and you start taking photos?QUEEN IM. I started messing around with ESTHER cameras back when I was about 17 years old (1997) with an old 35MM film camera that belonged to my dad when he was in high school. I always loved going on walks and hikes and taking images of the scenery. It wasn’t until I started taking photographs of people that I really felt like I was onto sometnig and could be good at it. TS. How do you describe the type of photos you take? IM. There are so many different labels that people put on photography, to be honest I dont even know what you would call it. Some say glamour, some say artistic, a few say fashion. I would maybe categorize it as edgy, artistic glamour. ”I always try to push the images to be as sexy as they can be but at the same time remain as BABESGLOBAL FULL OF INK & TATTITUDEOOVV1EE0RR5 Why when AMELIAphotogarnadphing tatdtoidoeydoubastbaerst?COVERS!Wvaeerrlstlyi, lsoIwtwpseeelorllsrykopntnueoarownlplneyldeaairwmntihtsaootscma.oreSleloettacaiktttositnroogoonfeplydahronattwasotoguwrrrkeaalplal;thnhssdaootItfamatmkaoitnscttgoooonpfeshdmtoaptynoetpgloyerparglspeeohtantsniandolgffhrtjieauertsnettod’sorsateahndredebooyamulDaltcptIlNaooettmoMtoopefoOl!e RE All Photographs owned and respresented by their respected parties by Joseph O Brien (c)

TS. What do you aim for when you takepictures? Is there a key to a great shot?IM. To me, I would like to express astrong connection between the modelseyes and the viewer. This to me is whatseparates a good photographer froma great photographer. It can be verychallenging to make this happen andthis is something that has taken meyears to perfect. And although I stillwould not consider myself as a “great”photographer, I am always pushing toone day be.TS. We know there is soo many outthere but is there a photographer whohas inspired you in your work?IM. This is very easy. I have seen a lotof amazing photographers over theyears but one has always stood outto me as my favorite and this is notonly because his work is amazing butalso because he is very humble andwill gladly have a conversation withanyone who wishes to speak with him.He goes by “T H Taylor” and is basedout of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, US LEAXILNIGCTYOAN CARMAIA TS. You’ve worked with models from all corners of the globe, how do international models compare to the girls back in the States? IM. I think its only natural to be more intrigued by foreign models only because you know nothing about them, what they will sound like, how well they will understand you, how they will model etc. Overall, there is nothing “special” about them but it does make for a far more interesting experience and photoshoot. I personally prefer to shoot international models than local models.

UKS UNDERGROUNDALT MAG | #01 VILLEROCK GOD.. VALO SPEAKS OUTWe met up with the legend elcome to Teen Spirit, Ville! I know it’s cold and dark outside, so thanks forthat is HIM’s Ville Valo coming to hang out with us today!to chat about a career Don’t worry we’re use to the dark and cold. The Finnish winters have barelythat has spanned two 2 hours daylight, and if the moon doesn’t come out there’s barely any at all!decades, dream fesitvals, and drinking with men in As I’m sure you’re aware everyone loves you guys over here in the UK..skeleton dresses.. Not sure if everyone does, but we do try. It’s tough but since the release of our album ‘Love Metal’ which came out ten years ago, it really did open up a door for us as people started to enjoy and appreciate what we were about. But it’s a special place for us as many of our idols come from the UK so making it here was historical. /theheartagram www.heartagram.com
So you enjoy touring the UK then? So your career has spanned over two decades - you’ve been killingYes! I love the nature, the language; even the weather at times. It’s it for quite a while now. What do you think it is that makes you soa cool place to hang out! I’m happy that the tour is ending here. relevant still? I mean, you have 8 albums now, that’s insane! So what do you think it is that has kept you in touch with your fansSo Is this why you decided to record your music in English? all this time?I think it was natural as a lot of the Finnish rock n roll is fairly I think not being in touch with the fans too much. We’re not big onarty and we don’t have any ‘Finnish metal’; its very based on Facebook and social media and i think if its one thing we do well isverbalism. The Finnish language doesn’t really give you the ability trusting our gut instincts! I think its important to trust yourself andto talk internationally and as we grew up with Kiss and Maiden to please ourselves and hopefully this is the magic you can hear inwe had big hopes and we had to dream. It seemed easier to write our music. We’ve always been really independent and even thoughin English. The bar is much lower as Finnish is a complicated we have worked with major labels; we’ve always been adamantlanguage; as i’ve tried writing in Finnish and it didn’t work that our albums are our responsibility and our burden to carry to the pearly gates as so; so it’s something that we have to be proudSo you mentioned Kiss and Maiden, what would be your dream of. There has to be passion and a reason to make the album.line up for a festival? Would HIM headline? Whatever we do has to be heart felt as so many people nowadaysIf it was a dream festival we definitely wouldn’t be in it; we’d get into it and lack the passion and prefer aspects such as socialjust chill. There are soo many influences so the likes of Type O media and forget the music. That’s something that I think is notNegative, Electric Wizard, Interpol, Bad Brains, Misfits - It would very special about us, but is very HIM.be a traveling festival.. and add in Iggy Pop of course as you can’thave a festival without Iggy.. So Teen Spirit is all about the alternative - alternative babes, bands and, of course, tattoos. Now the Heartagram is one of theWhat Festivals really stand out for you either now or when you most iconic, recognisable band logos out there, how do you feelwere a kid? when you see your fans with it tattooed on them? The Roskilde festival in Denmark, it has something like only Very Proud! I think it’s very similar to songs. When you write a100,000 capacity but its a great festival in the sense of it has song its yours.. when you rehearse it with the band, it’s ours. Theneverything; all different kinds of music and from stage to stage once it’s out of our hands it’s the peoples to interpret the way theyyou walk and you’re always surprised at each stage. I went back want it. When I drew the Heartagram, I didn’t know what it wasin 1996 and it was the only time I’ve been to a festival as a paying going to be like but it grew and traveled really well all across thecustomer. But it had bands such as Sex Pistols, Type O Negative, globe and it’s really recognisable and acknowledged worldwide.Slayer - Some really heavy acts and then some folky acts. Soit was amazing! You were force fed so many different kinds of “Im proud to be a part of that! I think themusic; as if you went to a Metal festival you get to that stage best things come when it just happens andwhere you’re bored of the same music so this was a great festival goes with the flow. It’s the magic of it.”with a great range of music We didn’t have any hopes as it was just a logo and it’s been a very surreal journey! So, besides fans getting the Heartagram tattooed on them, have you had any really crazy fan experiences? What was the most intense? I mean different cultures have different ways. In some Eastern European places you have more aggressive people, where people think they own you and grab you. But everywhere is different. Take for example, we played in Wolverhampton and I was checking the city out on a Sunday night when I ran into a guy called Mr Death - a big fan who was dressed in a Skeleton Dress and we ended up in a pub drinking pints and chatting shit about TV; so that is what I call a very crazy and intense fan but in a positive way! He listens to my music and we probably listen to each others favourite bands. But then we do have people come along and knock on your door in the middle of the night, which is crazy.. That happens probably once a month. Is there a song that particularly goes down well or have you got one that is your personal favourite to get the crowd going? I mean one song that goes down well, especially in the UK, is Buried Alive by Love. It’s one of the songs that got good plays and it was one of the first songs that people thought “This is HIM and this is what makes them special”. But people react differently every night to different songs. Some places you have a calm crowd and others you’ll get moshpits. “So thank you so much; its been a great pleasure! This is Ville Valo from HIM reppin’ Teen Spirit!” Mumu Silva Fotografia
UKS UNDERGROUNDALT MAG | #01YOUR FIRSTTATTOOIt was the most terrifying thing. The first tattoo I did was shadingin a piece that my mentor had onhis leg. It was an outline of tribalaround his ankle. It was a reallyhumbling experience especiallyknowing how bad it was. Fromthen on it got a bit easier but Iwill never forget how difficulteverything was in the beginning. YOUR STYLE INK SPECIALIST ..It is difficult to label, but I would say a mix TONYof renaissance ideas and surrealism. I try MANCIAto follow a classical approach to what Iam doing and take it from there. The mostimportant thing to me is that the tattoo isaesthetically pleasing to look at. So havingstriking imagery and a good flow with thebody is the most important thing to me. hen did you realise that..this What’s your favourite tattoo piece is it! I want to become a tattoo you’ve done to date? artist!? I really don’t have a favourite. I think I never really planned on being a every piece fits the person they are on tattoo artist. I started becoming so it’s more important to me that each fascinated with art around the age of piece becomes a part of the client. As 14. It was the only thing that kept me far as subject matter, I really enjoy doing out of trouble. I decided to further my anything that morphs! knowledge of art specifically paintingThe maestro of detail is and art history. I did my best to takein town. INSPIRATION “I would have to say my biggest inspiration comes from never being satisfied with what I am doing.” There is always room to progress and learn. That keeps me pushing every day to grow and expand my knowledge of art and try to further my abilities when it comes to any medium. Another constant inspiration is traveling. I travel about 5 months out of the year working different conventions and seeing new countries. The tattoo industry is booming at the minute.. Do you see Whats planned ahead for yourself?this as being a short lived craze or are people realizing that Starting 2015 I will be splitting my time between thetattoos are a thing of beauty? It is We’ll finish with any shoutouts..a good thing tattoos have become more socially accepted I just want to thank you for the interview, And see you in the UKand more people are being tattooed. But, some things get soon guys and girls.lost in the process. The industry has grown much morethen anyone could have imagined. Which leads to manyoutside companies exploiting the tattoo culture. With all theshows and publicity the industry has gotten over the pastyears, it has skewed the ideal of getting tattooed. In someways it has lost its exclusiveness. With that being said, it’sgrowing popularity has opened many doors to the art oftattooing. More people regardless of ageare committing to larger scale workand seeing the beauty in tattooing. And are also able to research andfind an artists work that bestsuits them as an individual. But none of that affects youif you just keep true to yourstandards and expectations. There are so many talentedartists across the world, doyou have any favourites? There are so many incredibleartists in the tattoo world that itwould be too difficult to name them. But some artists that stand out to meand have always been a big inspiration areTim Kern, Shige, and Tommy Lee.

What advice would you give to any girls wanting tobecome an alternative model?Doubting yourself or letting others make you feellike you are not good enough is the worst thingyou can do in regards to any career. “You can always be better, but have confidence in the abilities you do have. Work at strengthening them every day and never give up.”Constantly search for knowledge and networkso you can learn and be presented with newopportunities to learn. Lastly, never burn bridges.Anyone and everyone can be a resource. In turn,be supportive of anyone and everyone that seeksfor your help.So when you first started modelling and gettinginto the alternative scene, what aspect did youfind the hardest?Probably gaining respect and recognition frompeople. The whole entire world works in a similarfashion. Networking and knowing the “rightpeople” is a large factor in almost all fields ofwork. 45 LOWER THAN ATLANTISIt wasnt always like this though.. How has this changed Every band has a secret formula behind them. Some say from seven years ago when you started out? it’s brotherhood, others say it’s passion and love for music. What would you say is the secret formula behind Lower thanWell it’s a completely different world from what we started outfrom in the beginning in terms of the way the management Atlantis?machine works but in terms of expanding and getting peopleto hear our music not so much. We still gotta go out there “Definitely the passion for music. Thisand win people over that might otherwise write us off. Its band has had so many ups and downsgreat to have the ongoing support from radio and Radio 1 and line-up changes that if anyone wasespecially! In terms of festivals, we haven’t headlined any in it for any less than the passion for theyet but that’s a definite aim for the future whether it takes music they would have already left!” another 5 years or just a couple.9“ BTIHGGAENR &EBVRAEVERR!“ Would you say this is a new chapter in Lower Than Atlantis /10 where we may hear a new sound behind you guys that we’ve never heard before?.. Do you still have that edge you firstThe hype surrounding this album is massive, you must have started with?a tour planned to follow it up..? It totally depends what you think edge is. If you think the edgeWe just played a headline show at London’s KOKO in is just being heavy then no, probably not. Anyone can hear thatDecember and there’s definitely a lot of stuff in the pipeline we are not as heavy as we were but I think we have kept thatfor 2015 that we definitely can’t say yet! edge by throwing a curveball with every record. Have a listen to this one and tell me that you saw it coming. Progression toSo own upto this one.. who has the worst habits when you’re me, is the most important thing to keep a band fresh. If you’reon tour? planning on releasing the same album 10 times then good for you but I definitely won’t be part of it.I don’t think anyone has any particularly bad habits theworst thing you can do is get up before everyone else and To our fans who queue up in the rain, spend their last dollar onwalk around making noise as if everyone is up, eventually seeing us live and bring the mosh to every show we perform at...waking everyone up. No one likes being woken up when theydon’t have to be! “Thanks for sticking with us! and we hope you enjoy the music as much as we do! Bless LTA x”
