If you flick back to our October 2021 edition, you will see we had the great pleasure to cover the newly opened and family owned Charm Hotel Colégio located in Tavira. At the time we met with and interviewed José Carlos, husband to Cristina, the father of Marta and grandfather of Francisco. It was mentioned that the Colégio Charm Hotel was the second hotel the family had opened, their first hotel, run by Marta, is located in the little town of Santa Rita and we were invited to have a look. This month we decided to make good on the invitation extended then and visit Conversas de Alpendre. Conversas de Alpendre, once a farmhouse, sits on an acre of land that has now been converted into a small boutique hotel surrounded by orchards. As the name suggests, many conversations have been held on the various cosy porches created and dotted all over the premises. 5 years ago Marta, with the help of her siblings, managed to convince their father and mother to leave Lisbon, move to the Algarve and go into semi-retirement. José Carlos and his wife never wanted to compromise on family, family is the most important element in their lives. It was soon agreed that a small hotel which could become a big house when the family gathered was the way forward. When the farm was bought, extensive renovations and expansion were needed. Marta, was highly pregnant, working as a pharmacist and was based in Lisbon with her husband Tiago, an IT specialist. Not wanting for their child to grow up living in a big city, the two handed their notice in, moved to the Algarve and continued the project Marta convinced her parents to start. Time would reveal the winning combination of two generations coming together, with creativity, dedication and family being at the heart of this collaboration. 10 www.eastalgarvemag.com
Places www.eastalgarvemag.com 11
Places The hotel with 10 rooms adjoined to the main house and 3 special spaces in the garden, has been open and running for 5 years. Francisco, now 5 and a half, has been dubbed the Little Boss as he was the catalyst and inspiration for many of the outside spaces. A smile spreads across the faces of the family as they begin to tell us the story of the last space they built in the garden, a treehouse. Cristina is a doting grandmother and thought it would be wonderful to have a treehouse for her grandson to play in, the rest of the family found the idea so intriguing they decided to build a treehouse for their guests. The treehouse is located in the back of the garden, in an old Alfarroba tree, a more accurate way to describe it is, it is a house lifted off the ground and built around an ancient Alfarroba tree. The tree continues to grow, unharmed and not bothered by the house that happens to share the space. The other 2 spaces in the garden are equally impressive, a log cabin, so inconspicuous it could be mistaken for a pile of decorative logs. The giveaway is the private pool in the back, same for the area the family has called the warehouse. This space was once indeed a warehouse, now it is the most beautiful cabin also with its own plunge pool. If you are looking to stay somewhere unlike anywhere else, where you are welcomed and greeted as family, where hospitality comes first and where style does not comprise comfort, then we highly recommend this amazing place. Tucked away in the countryside, with views of the Ria Formosa, is a special space containing many special spaces. Ps. The Little Boss did get his very own treehouse, modelled on the one for grownups. Art ARTIST OF Virgilio Raposo was born in THE MONTH: Lagos, Algarve in 1955. An inward looking artist, Virgilio VIRGILIO expresses in his work not RAPOSO only the beauty of the world we live in, but also a serenity 20 and infinity in the better purpose of man. Basically self-taught, his work shows a surprising quality and understanding of colour. This is even more surprising when one considers that his subject matter is usually the natural coast line of the Algarve, which, because of the strength in the actual light, is extremely hard to recapture on canvas. Property SHORT-TERM As with most investment VERSUS decisions there is no LONG-TERM straightforward answer. RENTALS Both rental strategies have their own pros and cons. Short Term Rentals (STR) are those available to tenants for an overnight stay, a week, or another limited period of time, but not exceeding 28 days. These properties are completely furnished and ready to use. Popular platforms for short term rentals these days are Booking, HomeAway and Airbnb. The idea behind Long-Term Rentals (LTR) is to buy a property purely as an investment in order to rent to a permanent tenant for a much longer period of time, e.g. 1 year or longer. People BREATHWORK 41 P eter Winch practices and teaches breathwork, much like meditation it helps people to really connect to themselves on an even deeper level. He said: “It can greatly reduce the stress, worries and anxiety that we suffer from in our lives as well as giving us a heightened sense of clarity and focus therefore helping our mind to think more clearly and make better decisions. “It takes you on a beautiful path, aligning the body, mind and soul and creating more balance, calmness and peace.” Peter, who comes from Birdham, originally discovered breathwork two years ago when he first travelled to Bali and became fascinated by ‘the power of this healing tool’ and its many benefits. He decided to base himself in Bali to further his knowledge. The first session he did was a style known as ‘rebirthing breathwork’. He said: “After about 20 minutes of breathing with this form I noticed my breath pattern changing on its own and slowly becoming deeper and faster without my intention. “This was followed by an intense and almost overwhelming feeling of emotion and what was intriguing to me was that I wasn’t aware of where it came from as my head was very clear of any thoughts.” Peter explains how he carried on with the breath under the careful guidance of the facilitator despite being a little fearful. “Suddenly I had what is known in the breathwork world as a ‘release’ which is when you breathe through any resistance you are feeling until the emotion rises and then allow that feeling to come out, which for me was tears, however, in some cases yelling or screaming can also greatly help the individual” he said. “After the session, I felt a huge wave of positive emotion, I guess like a big weight had been lifted and this in turn made everything seem so much clearer. I decided then that I needed to train in this and help others.” The sessions are currently being held online and are donation based, these can be small groups or private one to one sessions. Each session lasts between an hour to an hour 15 depending on how many people are attending. It starts with a ten minute introduction followed by a short grounding meditation and then 40 minutes of breathing practice. At the end is a further five to ten minutes of discussion giving those involved the opportunity to share any thoughts or feelings that came up during or at the end of the process. Peter explained: “The sessions are held in a loving and supportive environment allowing for whatever trapped emotions or blockages the body needs to release or let go of to come freely. “This will all in turn help us to form an even stronger connection to ourselves, the earth, the universe and the beautiful people that surround us in our everyday lives! “During these present times where stress and anxiety levels sometimes run high, breathwork can have a huge amount of benefits.” For more information, you can email Peter on [email protected] www.eastalgarvemag.com
