We caught up with owners Filipa and Andy. Despite the tumultuous weather of late, we met Filipa and Andy on a lovely, warm, spring like day. It was obvious the two had equal levels of respect and admiration for each other, the friendship between them was clear. It turns out they first met back in May 2018. Filipa, originally from Lisbon, had moved to the Algarve in 2007 and was working evenings in Vert'in, Andy’s local. They have been friends ever since. A year later, in August, Filipa went back to www.eastalgarvemag.com

People TOavhcoitmroeapof'suthes W e visited restaurant Located close to the old market in Tavira, restaurant Polvaria Polvaria João Belhi, João Belhi serves a delicous variety of Octopus dishes located close to the old market in Tavira. Originally a local Taverna, the establishment first opened in 1961. Back in those days, the local fishermen would unload their catch right across the road from the Taverna, then known as Carmina. As the name suggests, Polvaria João Belhi specialises in Octopus. The owner of the building is João Belhi, who has direct ties to the original restaurant owner, Carmina. The menu consists of Octopus served in a variety of styles, including; Curried, Tempura, Risotto, and of course grilled. They also serve one of the best seafood Paella in Tavira. Respecting the history as a Taverna, the restaurant has a very large selection of fragrant wines, and of course, a variety of red wines that pair perfectly with Octopus. 12 www.eastalgarvemag.com

HOLIDAY ACCOMODATION • Peaceful and quiet location • 3 bedrooms (6 pax + children) • Heated swimming pool • Putting green • Fully equipped house • Solar panels for self-consumption • 15km to some of the Algarve's most beautiful and calm beaches • 6 different golf courses within 20km radius • 10min from Tavira city center Today, the Polvaria João Belhi is run by Miguel Caleça and his montedafuzeta partner Renata Pacco, along with Chef Dinesh Sharma. [email protected] Miguel opened the restaurant in August 2021. For centuries his family has been involved in seafood and restaurants. His grandfather 15 Tomé is very well known in Tavira as a producer of seafood. Miguel had his first seafood shop in Quarteira in 2007, called Água Salgada. In 2009 he then opened a shop in Tavira under the same name. Before owning restaurants, he was a supplier of seafood for many restaurants across the Algarve and being ambitious, he continues to do so. In 2012 he converted Água Salgada in Tavira into a restaurant and opened another in Quarteira in 2014. Over the next few years he continued to expand his range of seafood shops across the Algarve, one in Albufeira and one in Faro. In 2021 he acquired and opened Polvaria João Belhi and Restaurant Ensui; a Sushi and Thai restaurant nearby. As the photos clearly show, Restaurant Polvaria João Belhi certainly knows how to produce excellent food. It is firmly at the top of our list of favourites and will remain so. You can find the restaurant just past the old market in Tavira; Rua José Pires Padinha, No 94. Telephone: +351 281 407 067 Email: [email protected] www.eastalgarvemag.com

If you are selling your house or want to rent it out on a long term basis the property needs to have an energy certificate before you put it on the market. By Portuguese law this energy classification must be mentioned on all publicity, e.g. real estate agencies websites, portals, social media such as Facebook as well as in print. Simply stating that the energy classification is in progress or pending is not enough. The law makes no difference between a company and a private individual. The only difference is the amount of the fine in case of non-compliance. The fine varies for a company between € 2.500 to €44.890 depending on the level of infractions and for individuals € 250 - €3740. In Portugal the Direção-Geral de Energia e Geologia is the department who enforces the law regarding energy qualifications of buildings. Property East Algarve Magazine INTERNATIONAL MEET-UPS Our regular meet-ups are proving to be a great success, so much so that we are now introducing a regular morning 'learn Portuguese' meet-up Our events so far, in Tavira, Olhão, Cabanas and VRSA have all been a resounding success. It's been wonderful to see and listen to people making new friends and arranging to meet outside of the group. It is also a great opportunity to share your experiences, and gain from others. Each month we will meet at a designated venue in or around Tavira. There will also be a meet up towards the beginning of the month somewhere else in the East Algarve; Cabanas, Olhão, Fuseta, Monte Gordo or Vila Real. The next meet up will be on the 9th March in Olhão at Re-Criativa República 14 Associação Cultural, Av. da República 14, 8700-310 Olhão, then on 23rd March at Cafe Mira, R. Dr. Marcelino Franco 27, 8800-669 in Tavira. Events start at 6pm. 'East Algarve Magazine International Meet-Ups' Facebook group has been set up and is where the latest updates will be posted. We've also started a regular morning meet-up for people who would like to learn conversational Portuguese, in a relaxed, informal environment. Both Meet-Ups are free of charge and all group members are welcome to join the events. See Facebook for dates and locations. If you have any questions or suggestions just join the Facebook group, or email [email protected] R. ARTIST OF T ime and space have a very relaxed THE MONTH relationship in Jane Page’s latest paintings. Figures from past times JANE wander through Tavira’s streets of today PAGE in juxtapositions with the local flora and fauna that are unusual, to say the least. 38 This general style of painting has been labelled 'magic realism' - the various elements are precisely painted and instantly recognisable - although you’ll need to be very familiar with the town to find some of them - but it’s the mix that provides the magic. And the other-worldly air of detachment in the paintings is balanced by a sprinkling of visual jokes. Jane Page has been living and painting in the East Algarve for over thirty years and many people will be familiar with her work - always changing, always exploring different ways to portray the places and people of this beautiful part of the world. Since leaving the countryside around Santa Catarina da Fonte do Bispo (where she got involved with one of the small tile factories and produced the unusual tile paintings that you see as you enter the village) and moving into Tavira five years ago, Jane and her dog have been wandering around the town’s back streets, and when the dog stops to sniff the heady mix of smells, Jane stares at the details and wonders how to make a story from them. Part of the appeal of the Magic Realism style of painting is that each viewer is drawn in to make up their own story... Jane Page’s work can be seen at Artesis Gallery, in Tavira. The ‘Magic Realism’ exhibition runs through March. www.eastalgarvemag.com

Food We met the Head of Food and Beverages Bruno Viegas and Head Chef Humberto Paulos from the Ria Terrace Restaurant, on a sunny afternoon. Humberto, from Olhão, has been at Quinta da Ria for five years, Bruno since January 2022. They have just introduced their special Sunday Roast and Wednesday Fish and Chip lunches. The restaurant also serves an international menu, which includes an English breakfast. Looking forward to the longer summer evenings, Bruno tells us about the events they have coming up, including Sunset parties. 'We have a very diverse community living here in the East Algarve and we want to cater for everyone. We have even had a Swedish Christmas dinner. We want to make it clear that we are open to the public, not only golfers'. Ria Terrace restaurant also holds regular wine dining events, specialising in Portuguese wines and regional products. The terrace is a beautiful place to spend an afternoon soaking up the sun, even if only to enjoy a glass of wine or a refreshing Gin and Tonic. However, there's no doubt you'll be tempted by the food once you see it.
