We meet Teresa, the mother Mbehind the gardens of Cacela Velha.any come to Cacela Velha for the breathtaking views over the Ria Formosa and to have a stroll around the picturesque village. It is a place steeped in history and has a wealth of cultural heritage. However, it does not end here, there is more. On the right below the car parking area are gardens, these gardens were created, protected and are cared for by Teresa. Teresa Patrício Varzéa has been a resident of Cacela Velha since 1987. Having traded Lisbon for the Algarve in 1981, she visited and lived in many towns and villages before she discovered, the then unknown, Cacela Velha. Life is mysterious and as it happened, one of the few houses in the village was available for rent. Teresa did not know at the time that, through a sequence of events, she would buy the rental, become the owner, and spend her days tending to the protected gardens below. This in turn would lead her, in conjunction with the organisation CIIP, to provide educational lessons to school children aged 5 - 12 years and to give tours and explanations of the gardens and surrounding area. It is difficult to imagine, but the land that has now been transformed by Teresa into gardens was originally agricultural land, farming grains, it was bought by the council of VRSA to protect the area and the Ria Formosa. Sadly, it soon became a wasteland and a popular site for dumping building rubble and green waste. In 2002, the municipality decided the area needed to be purposeful and held an open forum, a third party suggested creating a campervan site.
