Places cobalt blue. How did you find your style of art? Style is always a process and personally I like to change my style frequently, though when working with ceramics sticking to one style is much easier because trying anything new is a battle, especially when it comes to glazes. This is the reason why most ceramic workers have one style they stick to their whole life. In my tile painting I often do portraits of birds and plants because that’s what I like the most or the classic style of Azuleijos, for my private work I lean more towards abstract and expressionist pieces. What has your involvement in art brought you? My involvement in art mainly brought me an income and an identity. It's a lifestyle, sometimes a very solitary one, that’s why I also like to sell at fairs because that’s where we meet each other and exchange ideas. What is the hardest part of your art making process? The hardest part in ceramic work is to accept that around 30 percent of the time, something goes wrong in the firing. That means you can do something for hours and then it is ruined (That’s why most stick to one process to diminish the loss). Where is your favourite place? I love being in the Serra, near the Guadiana, or in the middle of my herbs! What is your perfect day? My perfect day is when I'm in perfect peace of mind! Or being with my friends in the countryside or on the beach or dancing. Finally, where can people find you? People With a certain image to uphold, Tattoo artist Gualberto Sousa certainly has the look.We met him at his shop in Olhão to find out Awhat he's really like little early for our appointment, we are in front of the impressive custom-made facade of the Caverinha Tattoo Shop in Olhão, this is definitely not your average local tattoo parlour. We soon notice a black Chrysler PT Cruiser pulling up, without a shadow of a doubt, we know our interviewee has arrived. Olhão born Gualberto shows us into his studio, which is nothing quite like we have ever seen before. Floor to ceiling airbrushed art adorns the walls featuring old movie classics and favourites of Frankenstein and Marilyn Monroe, a glass top coffee table displays tens of photos of his art on his clients. In the front corner murals of a hotrod, cars and bikes create an area for merchandise and a display unit of awards won for a custom made and designed chopper. We learn that this is his pride and joy, built together with his father. When we ask about the airbrush art on the wall, Gualberto surprises us by saying it is his. We quickly realise we are speaking with an artist that is multi-talented across different platforms and various mediums. Gualberto started off as an airbrush artist and often worked together with his friend graffiti artist SEN (for interview with SEN, see November 2020 issue). Due to his experience as an airbrush artist, he was able to start tattooing immediately on people without needing to go through an apprenticeship. In 2008 he made the switch and began tattooing from a friend's house. During this time he built up a small client base which meant expanding. He created a home studio from which he worked for four years. In 2013 he would open the doors of his own studio, this is where the most incredible work we have ever seen is created at the skilled hands of an amazing tattoo artist. We find out that Gualberto’s favourite style is realism, however, he can pretty much do any INKEDIN 14 www.eastalgarvemag.com

People style. In fact, he has a lot of experience in medical tattoos, if you haven’t heard of it, it is worth looking up. He has transformed surgical scars and recreated nipples and areolas due to mastectomy, allowing many people to regain confidence. I think we have all heard of horror story tattoos, ones that have been ill drawn, faded beyond recognition and names of lovers now long forgotten about, but immortalised in ink. Gualberto nods his head and says 'coverups', he gets a lot of these and is able to fix them, it allows old memories to be in the past, where they sometimes belong. As we leave his establishment Gualberto gives us a big smile and says it is never too late to have your first tattoo and it doesn’t hurt half as much as you may think it does. Everyone says it hurts less than they thought it would. On a side note, having personally been in the studio and even watched a friend having some artwork done, I can say the attention to detail and hygiene in particular is flawless. If ever I would consider having something done, it would be at the hands of Gualberto only. Erik has spent a lifetime in HR, this is where his passion for finding happiness started, researching, studying and delving deep to learn about BLUE-ZONES (The Blue Zones - By Dan Buettner). This along with with the global events over the last few years made the humanitarian eager to start a venture to create a community to get back to normal, one free of anxiety, where nature is able to do what she does best, which is to relieve stress and bring calm back into our daily lives. All he needed was a partner in crime, which he found in his yoga teacher Iléa. At the time Iléa was busy with her own yoga studio in Tavira Yam Shala, after 3 years, she felt the need to expand, to go beyond yoga, yet was confined by a lack of space. The timing for these two like-minded individuals to meet was perfect, within a year the concept would be realised on a plot situated on 5000m2 of land in the countryside on the outskirts of the city of Tavira. Given Iléa’s background, it is quite easy to assume this is just another yoga studio, however, Iléa and Erik both explain that while yoga classes are given here, the House of Happiness has far more to offer. 37
The foundation of happiness lies in the balance of 5 elements - physical fitness, mental fitness, wellness therapies, healthy eating and community engagement.
