OVERVIEW WHO ARE WE? Qur'an: The Immense Ocean is a Ground-Up Initiative (GUI) program under NUS Muslim Society which started out in 2018. This programme aims to provide classes held within the university campus where students would be able to gain exposure and some knowledge of the Qur'an under the guidance of our local Asatizah. AIM To create an environment where students can be close to the Qur'an through reciting, listening, reflecting and learning. To develop a sense of love for the Quran and make it the basis of our actions in our daily lives, thereby bringing us closer to Allah s.w.t. and our Beloved s.a.w.
ORIGIN OUR NAME The name of this ground-up initiative (GUI) is inspired by Shaykh Ibn 'Ajiba's book titled The Immense Ocean (Al-Bahr Al-Madid) - a book which provides translations and explanations of the verses in the Holy Qur'an. Guiding Us Home -QTIO AY20/21 Semester 1- Overview Understanding the need that in order to love the Qur'an, we have to first get to know the author of the Qur'an, Our Creator, Allah جل جلاله. Hence, we introduced Guiding Us Home, a series of physical talks, where the Asatizah guided us in knowing Allah جل جلالهand understanding our relationships with Him, جل جلالهthrough His 99 names and attributes. Our Asatizah Ustaz Zulkarnain graduated with a bachelor's degree in Islamic Theology from Al-Azhar University, Cairo, Egypt, after spending 12 Ustaz Zulkarnain Azman years of his education at Madrasah Aljunied Al-Islamiah. He loves engaging youth and young adults and is active online. He is also an avid reader and is passionate about looking into ideas and understanding community. Ustazah Marhamah Senewi Ustazah Marhamah Senewi studied at Madrasah Aljunied for 12 years and graduated with a BA in Arabic Language and Literature with a minor in Translation and Interpretation from Yarmouk University in Jordan. She loves learning and discovering linguistical gems in relation to the Quran. Ustazah Marhamah works in the youth sector supporting youth development and initiatives. Ustaz Mohamad Nasrullah is ARS Tier 1 certified. Ustaz Nasrullah graduated with a bachelor's degree in Arabic Language and Literature from Al-Azhar University, Cairo, Egypt. Ustaz Nasrullah received his early education at Madrasah Aljunied Al-Islamiah. Ustaz also holds a Specialist Diploma in Islamic Thought and Ustaz Mohamad Nasrullah Refa'ie Civilization from International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilization (ISTAC - IIUM), Malaysia.
Talks by Asatizah #1 : Asma'ul Husna with Ustaz Zulkarnain Azman to give a better understanding on the significance of learning the different names and attributes of Allah s.w.t and how we can relate our every actions to His attributes, and the etiquette of calling out His names when making dua. #2 : His Divine Oneness with Ustaz Zulkarnain Azman to internalize and ponder upon the meaning of one of the most often recited surahs and why it was revealed to Rasulullah s.a.w. #3 : Why Me? with Ustazah Marhamah Senewi shared on the linguistics of some of Allah’s names such as Al-Fattah (The Opener), Al-Hadi (The Guide) and Ar-Rashid (He who guides), and how we can be more specific when making dua by calling out Allah’s attributes that are related to our duas. #4 : Feeling pressured? with Ustaz Mohamad Nasrullah how to find solace in Allah s.w.t when we are in distress and to also understand that it is equally important for us to turn to Him when we are blessed with goodness. #5 : Let's Recalibrate! This sharing focused on how our ultimate goal is on building our relationship with Allah s.w.t rather than merely worshipping Him. Ustaz Nasrullah shared our constant need for reminders and the importance of trying to purify our hearts throughout our journey. #6 : His Divine Presence This sharing focused on how our ultimate goal is on building our relationship with Allah s.w.t rather than merely worshipping Him. Tajwid & Tadarus - QTIO AY 20/21 Semester 2 - Overview To learn the rules of Qur'an recitation based on the laws of Tajwid To encourage Qur'an recitation among our students and as a result, form a close relationship with the Qur’an What is Tajwid? Tajwid is an Arabic word for elocution and refers to the rules governing pronunciation during recitation of the Qur'an What are some benefits? Helps in better understanding and learning of the Qur'an Helps in the error-free recitation of the Qur'an Beautifies our recitation of the Qur'an What is Tadarus? Tadarus is an act of reciting the Qur'an together or in a reading circle. What are some benefits? Improve the reading with the presence of an expert Gain the knowledge of tajwid Foster closer relations with everyone Relieve stress at school Most importantly, be closer to Allah
Ustaz Adi Ho is the Co-Founder and an ARS-Certified teacher at Yameen Quran Academy. He obtained his Diploma in Islamic Jurisprudence (Syari'ah) and Arabic Language in Damascus, Syria. Ustaz was formerly an Imam in Masjid Sultan and a Khatib during Friday prayers in different Masjids. He was recently appointed as the board member of Masjid Salim Mattar to overview the Dakwah division. Ustaz Adi Ho Events Tajwid Sessions A series of talks about how we can improve our Qur'an recitation through learning the Tajwid and the importance of learning it. #1: Nun As-Sakinah (Iqlab & Idgham) Definition of Iqlab and Idgham Identification of the rulings based on examples from the Qur'an #2: Nun As-Sakinah (Izhar & Ikhfa') Definition of Izhar and Ikhfa' Identification of the rulings based on examples from the Qur'an #3: Mim As-Sakinah & Wajibul Ghunnah Types of Mim As-Sakinah - Idgham Shafawi, Ikfa' Shafawi and Izhar Shafawi Definition of Wajibul Ghunnah Tadarus Sessions Weekly Tadarus sessions were held both physically in school and online on zoom. Participants came together to recite the Qur’an and applied what they have learnt during the Tajwid sessions taught by Ustaz Muhammad Adi Ho. Participants were divided into groups of 5 consisting of 1 mentor (NUS students) and 4 mentees per group.

Blossoming Barakah - QTIO AY21/22 Sem 1 - Overview The theme 'Blossoming Barakah' aims to emphasise the role of the Qur'an and its verses in increasing Barakah in our daily lives. This is carried out in three stages; Seeding, Stemming, and Blooming of Barakah! The term 'Blossoming' hopes to depict Barakah as something beautiful that is attained gradually. In this series, we aim to understand the barakah of learning the Qur'an, particularly Surah Al-Fatihah, and encourage the learning of Qur'an and Tajweed. Our Asatizah Ustazah Nisa Rahmad is ARS Tier 2 Certified. She was from Madrasah Aljunied Al-Islamiah and attained her Diploma in Management Studies in SUSS. She is the co-owner of Yameen Quran Academy which provides a simplified Quranic learning system, offering programs revolving around Ustazah Siti the Muslim community and the Qur'an. She is also a freelance speaker Khairunnisa Rahmad whose niche is in Qur'an learning. Ustazah Nuraizah Amin is ARS Tier 1 Certified. She conducts courses exclusively for ladies and teens in Yameen Quran Academy. She has been in the Islamic teaching industry after graduating from Madrasah Aljunied Al-Islamiah. She later pursued her passion in Diploma in Biomedical and obtained her degree in the same course at the University of Bradford. Her passion for Ustazah Nuraizah Islamic knowledge continues as she continues to seek knowledge in various countries. Amin Ustaz Muhammad Ustaz Ho Muhammad Adi is ARS Tier 1 Certified. He obtained a Diploma in Adi Ho Islamic Jurisprudence (Syari'ah) and Arabic Language in Damascus, Syria. Along with Ustazah Nisa Rahmad Ho, Ustaz Adi Ho owns Yameen Quran Academy and has been coaching Quran literacy since 2005 and over 900 students at the academy. He was also the Imam of Sultan Mosque. He believes in supporting and sharing with the people around him the knowledge he has obtained.
Talks by Asatizah Seeding Barakah with Al-Qur'an with Ustazah Nisa Rahmad This sharing aims to bring our connection with Allah through the Qur'an on another level where we will get to learn about the linguistic beauty of the Qur'anic Arabic Language and its intricacies, the origin of Tajweed, and its significance. We believe that appreciating the Qur'an and its beauty is a step towards attaining the bountiful Barakah (blessings) Allah has prepared for those who strive for them. Stemming Barakah with Al-Fatihah with Ustazah Nuraizah Amin This sharing talked about Surah Al-Fatihah which is considered the most influential Surah, as it consists of almost the complete essence of the Islamic faith; believing and admiring the Exalted One, and asking Him only for gaining rectitude in life. We learnt about its specialty and how reading the beautiful and meaningful verses will earn us barakah (blessings) in life. Blooming Barakah with Al-Fatihah with Ustaz Adi Ho After uncovering the ever luminous blessings emanating from Surah Al-Fatihah, this sharing ventured further into learning the proper way of reciting the surah through adhering it's tajweed rulings and discovering the Dos and Don'ts of reciting the blessed opening chapter. Through this, we hoped to forge a more intimate bond with the Qur’an and in turn, strengthen our relationship with Allah swt. Tadarrus of Juz Amma The three sessions of Tadarrus & Talaqqi aim to put to practice whatever we learnt in the first three sessions about attaining barakah through reciting the Qur'an. The sessions provided a safe space for NUS undergraduates to guide one another in the recitation of the Qur’an, and to complete the recitation of Juz Amma in groups together.
Surah Al-Mulk The Sovereignty of Allah s.w.t - QTIO AY21/22 Sem 2 - Over view َع ِن الَّنِبِّي ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ َقاَل \" ِإَّن ُس وَرًة ِفي اْلُقْرآِن َثَالُثوَن آَيًة َش َفَع ْت ِلَص اِح ِبَه ا َحَّتى ُغِف َر،َع ْن َأِبي ُهَرْيَرَة َتَباَرَك اَّلِذي ِبَيِدِه اْلُم ْلُك:َلُه It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Prophet ( )ﷺsaid: \"There is a surah in the Qur'an, with thirty verses, which will intercede for its companion (the one who recites it) until he is forgiven: Tabarakal-ladhi bi yadihil mulk (Blessed is He in Whose Hand is the Dominion).\" We continued on with the theme 'Blossoming Barakah' with talks by Asatizah on the blessings encapsulated in Surah Al-Mulk, a surah often recited by many before resting for the night, and how these learning lessons can be applied to our daily lives. Objec tives - To highlight lessons from Surah Al-Mulk that are applicable in our daily lives - To encourage the reading of Surah Al-Mulk - To highlight the significance of the Sunnah of reading the Surah Our Asatizah Ustazah Nur Hidayah is ARS Tier 1 Certified and a content creator who actively shares her daily reflections through videos on her Instagram. She enjoys inspiring others out there to never be afraid to do something new and always has faith in Allah for the great adventure He has for us. After spending 12 years of her education at Madrasah Aljunied Al- Islamiah, she furthered her studies at the University of Malaya and was conferred the B.A. in Usuluddin (Al-Quran and Hadith). Ustaz Abdul Mateen is ARS Tier 1 Certified and has completed his formal education at Madrasah Aljunied Al-Islamiah. He received his Diploma in Usuluddin (Foundations of Islam), specializing in Tafsir at Ma’ad al- Ihsaniah, and continued to study the same course as a final year Undergraduate student at Al-Azhar University in Egypt. Ustaz Ahmad Helmi is ARS Tier 1 Certified and has graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Islamic Theology, specialising in Quranic Exegesis from Al-Azhar University, Cairo, Egypt. He is currently working on areas related to dakwah and youth development. Ustaz Ahmad Helmi enjoys the sharing of thoughts and believes that there is no limit to acquiring knowledge, especially in Islamic education.
Talks by Asatizah The Barakah of Reciting Al-Mulk with Ustazah Hidayah Azman This sharing kickstarted our journey of understanding Surah Al-Mulk by taking a glimpse of the various topics mentioned in the surah, such as the Proofs on the Greatness of Allah SWT in Verses 1 to 5, and His promises, knowledge and bounty from Verses 12 to 15. The sharing also higlighted the benefits of reciting Surah Al-Mulk such as bringing peace to our worries, fear, worries and uncertainties. The Greatness of Allah S.W.T with Ustaz Abdul Mateen Abu Bakar This sharing delved deeper into four Divine attributes of Allah swt: His existence, Him comprehending all the attributes of perfection and being most Exalted, being the ruler of the heavens and the earth (having complete control) and having power over everything (that exist). Hence, we learn to appreciate our total dependence on His grace, power and generosity. Trials and Tribulations, and the Purification of the Heart with Ustaz Ahmad Hilmi The sharing highlights the concept of trials and tribulations as a part of the nature Allah intends in this temporary world, and the various ways we can navigate through these hardships. In Surah Al-Mulk, Allah makes His servants contemplate on the universe and signs of Him as a means of strengthening our imaan and ultimately achieve a sound heart on the promised day we meet Him.
