Harrison Kornberg Architects Kristopher, Jan, and the Harrison Kornberg team, We want to personally thank you for providing us with the opportunity to learn more about your firm, your processes, and overall business goals on April 6th, 2021. We know your time is valuable and we appreciate you investing much of it with Autodesk. This document presents:  The information captured through our discussions.  Our recommendations based on that information.  The value justification. Business Objectives From our discussions together, we observed Harrison Kornberg Architects has two main areas they would like to focus and improve upon. The first being related to design and construction workflows and the second being related to overall brand recognition. Both areas have objectives to maximize the firm’s bottom line and to become a leading example within the architecture and design industry for innovative and efficient processes. These objectives are revisited and further defined later in this document under “We What Discovered.” Initial Thoughts Harrison Kornberg Architect’s pursuit of greater efficiency within their workflows requires an internal cultural shift. It is important to look at what fundamental choices can be made to reach this goal. I want to start to with discussing a Common Data Environment (CDE) as a baseline for this goal. The main pain-point we observe to bring organizations to a CDE is that there is a technological disconnect with the current culture. What does this mean? Data initiatives and office-wide technological rollouts often fail without clear direction and enforcement from leadership. For a CDE to thrive and a shift in culture, it should be built as a part of the firm’s baseline processes – to include workflows, standards, data access, and best practices.

Another pain-point we observe is trusting the culture shift. When data is disparate and fragmented, it is difficult for team members to believe the information they are seeing and using. Often the confusion, duplication, and missing information causes frustrated users. By standardizing your practices, the trusted environment begins to flourish, and a real culture shift can start to take place. As Harrison Kornberg Architects looks for ways to be more efficient in-house, we believe a CDE will also directly affect the firm’s reputation out-of-house. A CDE sets you up for success by allowing your team to optimize and utilize the information when it matters the most. Better yet, good data can empower future technologies including machine learning and AI to accelerate your project delivery. This is imperative to build workflow efficiencies, your brand, and your bottom line.

Pre-Design to Design to Construction Administration Processes What We Heard: Focus on Related Risks to Workflows Observation: Various sources to retrieve documents / many data silos. Examples: Local Drive, SharePoint, BIM 360 Risks:  Lack of a common data environment may present challenges with liability in the future and / or inefficiencies in the document management process.  Data silos tend to result in data loss and miscommunication throughout the project.  Maintaining up-to-date information on multiple platforms will result in double entry and a potential increase in errors.  Multiple data silos hinder ease-of-use in finding pertinent information quickly.  Currently there no way to connect different tools being utilized during projects.  A great deal of disconnection tends to lead to project uncertainty - surrounding overall outcome, schedule, and budget. ______________________________________________________________________________ Observation: A variety of different applications, products, and tools used throughout the lifecycle of the project. Examples: Sketchup, Hand-drawing, Revit, Illustrator, Massing, Excel Risks: Lack of interoperability can result in lost data, rework, and miscommunication. This can lead to time consuming consequences jeopardizing a project’s overall quality, budget, and schedule. ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ Observation: Multiple versions of a project model can cause confusion as to current design. Example: many “save-as” without standard nomenclature Risks: Iterative modeling process lacks standardization. This may cause missing data within a project and an ineffective use of time collaborating.

Observation: Fragmented workflows and inconsistency among team members on processes. Example: Sketchup to Revit data exchange Risks: Various workflows are being conducted on multiple platforms which creates a risk for data loss and errors. ______________________________________________________________________________ Observation: Design Phases to Construction Administration processes silo-ed. Example: Design Phase on Local Drives to SharePoint or from Local Drives to BIM 360 / Construction Administration on Local Drives or SharePoint to Procore or PlanGrid Risks:  The silo-ing of data does not allow for visibility and accountability among project team members.  Because data is not being captured – let’s look at issues - throughout the project lifecycle, information cannot be analyzed to help make better decisions on future projects. ______________________________________________________________________________ Observation: Manual processes or rework. Examples: RFI log in Excel and clash detection accountability administration. Risks:  Manual entry at various project phases results in non-productive activities and a loss of working hours.  Several processes could be streamlined by utilizing tools inside applications as opposed to recreating lists, downloading, uploading, etc. Photo via: All Together Now: Why Data Interoperability Is Game-Changing for Collaboration

The RFQ, RFP, and Conceptual Design Process Current Workflow The current workflow involves a lot of file storage, varying repositories, and utilization of tools and applications that are not inherently compatible without additional steps risking loss of data. The tool and processes shown to the left of the “cycle” are what makes Harrison Kornberg Architects unique and recognizable in their industry. These demonstrate your range of innovation, care, and commitment to their design processes.

The RFQ, RFP, and Conceptual Design Process Recommended Workflow The proposed workflow implements a common data environment and removes tools and applications unnecessary to achieve similar results. This workflow utilizes resources Harrison Kornberg Architects already uses and owns. The purpose of this recommendation is to reduce time managing data, reduce data loss between tools and applications, increase productivity, and demonstrate further efficiencies with technology.

The Design Documentation Process Current Workflow The current design process is like the pre-design and conceptual states in that it utilizes varying data repositories to store and share information. There is also use of redundant tools risking data loss and miscommunication among team members. There is also a need to better manage model iterations.

The Design Documentation Process Recommended Workflow The proposed workflow re-emphasizes the use of a common data environment and introduces the use of BIM interoperable tools to manage changing designs and minimize data loss when working with both a team and from one tool or application to another. Again, this workflow utilizes resources Harrison Kornberg Architects already uses and owns while streamlining their process.

The Construction Administration Process Current Workflow The current workflow utilizes either PlanGrid or Procore for Construction Administrative. The selected platform is dependent upon who has the choice. Either way, there is re-work found inside the workflow and use of an additional application unnecessary based on current toolset. Recommended Workflow The proposed workflow re-emphasizes the common data environment and incorporates Autodesk’s Build product offering. Autodesk Build utilizes the same cloud platform you are already using for Document Management, Design Collaboration, and Model Coordination allowing for that single source of truth. With our latest release of Build, you have project management tools AND PlanGrid’s field execution and mobile capabilities.

Pre-Design to Design to Construction Administration Processes What We Discovered Lack of standardization and multiple data silos can impact the way your project teams access your data. Multiple programs and solutions lacking interoperability cause mistrust of the accuracy of your data and is enabling project mistakes and rework. Rework = Time Wasted = Money Lost Part of the underlying issue is relying on old processes and potentially technology that is no longer meeting the needs of your business. I believe Harrison Kornberg Architects has an opportunity to remove redundant tools and applications, become more efficient by leveraging BIM interoperability, and with the adoption of a common data environment, meet your business objectives with less friction and greater speed. Remove Redundancy Leverage BIM Interoperability Common Data Environment = Efficient Design and Construction Workflows Industry Leader and Brand Recognition Increase Firm’s Profit Margins

Solution Recommendations Remove Redundancy We recommend re-evaluating your existing toolsets and removing those with redundancy. This not only opens the door to more efficient processes, but an opportunity to put money back into your business. Get rid of the extra distractions, re-work, risk of data loss, and time consumed going in out and of unnecessary programs. Leverage BIM Interoperability inside the AEC Collection You currently subscribe to our Architecture, Engineering, and Construction Collection. This collection has many resources to help you progress from the early stages of design through to construction. At the very least, I encourage you to incorporate FormIt Pro into your workflows as your primary 3D sketching tool.  Click here for more information on Form Pro: FormIt - Every Project Starts with a Sketch In its most recent release, FormIt Pro supports interoperability with Revit so you can connect your design concepts to BIM without remodeling… WITHOUT REMODELING.
