Friday 22 October 2021 NEWS 3WEEKLY SA MIRROR GO-GETTER: Newly crowned NEWLY Miss SA Lalela Mswane seeks CROWNED to remind other girls of the importance of dreaming. MISS SA’S ’15 SECONDS’ ON CLOUD NINE STUNNED: The new Miss SA Lalela Mswane still cannot believe she bagged the crown By Gugu Sibiya A week after being crowned Miss South Africa 2021, 24-year-old KwaZulu-Natal lass Lalela Mswane is still battling to ground herself in the middle of the post-pag- eant fanfare and haze that comes with the territory. “As people around me keep reminding me, it’ll slowly sink in” she says, contemplating how life around her took off like a space shuttle sooner after the announcement at the Miss SA event held at Grand West Casino last Saturday. “I suppose I’ll eventually wrap my head around it,” she adds, convincing herself. Recalling incidents that led her to this life-changing, yet most splendid moment of her life, Mswane said: “When my name was called, I was in total disbelief. The world got suspended for 15 seconds, I was in shock!” Yet, she says she really believe in herself. “But when it happened, it’s the most beautiful, humbling moment,” the new Miss SA gushes, adding that she has been extremely busy and has barely grasped her changed circumstances. And, so her family, who are still in a state of prolonged jubilation. “When I called my family shortly after my corona- tion, they were still stunned. They had no words, probably because they were thinking of everything we’d gone through. We prayed as a family, dreamed, hoped, shed tears, went through ups and downs, they were in disbelief. Now it’s tears of joy. They are very happy. Words can’t describe it.” Speaking on her passions, Mswane articulates issues that continue to plague the youth in schools. “When I was young- er, I was very tall, skinny and dark, so I got bullied. It was during that time that I wished that the opposite could have been the case. You know how nasty and hurtful kids can be. As a result, I couldn’t fit in, I was ostracised.” For her reign, she has chosen to tackle the emotive and thorny issue of youth unemployment. “I’m passionate about putting hours on advocacy work around unemployment. It affects mostly the youth. After years of studying at varsity, you don’t expect to be unemployed. There are no jobs in the country. Covid-19 has perpetuated the problem. Until a few days ago, I was also unemployed,” discloses the University of Pretoria law graduate. With her fortunes having changed overnight, she regards herself now as employed, insisting that ascending the throne is a full-time job on its own. She was born at KwaSokhulu, a stone’s throw from Richards Bay. “I hope to inspire not only kids from my village but girls all over the country. My sights are on Miss World, which is happening shortly,” she reveals. She may just bring the globally coveted crown, who knows, What with the country firmly behind her!

Small wonder, this old timer was regular fea- ture at the now-defunct Nederburg wine auction up to the event’s last run in 2018. Its trustworthiness has remained pretty much the same with the Cape Fine and Rare Wine Auction, having replaced Ned- erburg. Like other wines featured in both auctions, Chateau Libertas has and still plays the invaluable ambassadorial role of proving the longevity of South African wines while positioning the country as a prime wine destination. Impressively, the wine’s investment value has been demonstrated multiple times – as much too at the last Nederburg auction in 2018. At the event, a 1957 Chateau Libertas, the oldest wine at that par- ticular edition of the event, fetched R55 000 for six (750ml) bottles – translating to approximately R9 300 a bottle. A enormous return, to think a single bottle of the same wine would have cost nothing more than R1 in 1957. Other jaw-dropping prices at the 2018 Ned- erburg auction were R15,000 for a 1968 Chateau Libertas for three 750ml bottles of the wine, trans- lating to R5,000 bottle. And R10,000 was paid for three (750ml) bottles of 1978 Chateau Libertas 1978, at R3,333 apiece. Still, a bottle of 1940 Cha- teau Libertas fetching a whopping price of R20 000
