Each lacquerware piece is entirely made of bamboo and coated with black natural lacquer varnish referred to as yang rak, an ancient predecessor of plastic which was used to enhance durability and waterproof products. The lacquerwares, coated only with black varnish and vermillion – not in black and gold as seen nowadays – were referred to as “Kua Hak Kua Hang” and used throughout the Lanna culture in traditional ceremonies such as wedding processions.
