3 Important Units • 1 kg of LPG = 46,200 BTU. • 1 Kg of LPG=13.5 Kw. • 1 BTU/hr. = 0.29307107 W • 1 lit LPG = 0.565 kg. • 1 Gallon=3.785 Lit. • C=5/9(F-32)---0C=32F. • Heating : • 1 Sqm = 150 watt. 3
4 Brief steps for designing central gas system: 1. Draw the schematic pipework. 2. Determine gas load (i.e. BTU/Hr.) - the system consumption per hour. 3. Define the required tank size. 4. Determine the pipe size. 5. Determine the gas regulators size. 6. Or Use Pipe Size software. 4

12 Example : Pipe Sizing Determine the sizes of piping required for the two –stage LP-Gas installation shown : 12
13 Answer : Gas PIPE Sizing • Total 1st stage piping length=26 feet, 1st stage regulator setting is 10 psi (700mbar),(use table No.1 @ 30ft), From aa to a, the demand is =338 BTU/Hr., use ½” pipe. • The 2nd stage piping length = 58 feet ,(use table No.3 @ 60ft): From a to b, the demand is =338 BTU/Hr., use 1” pipe. From b to c, the demand is =138 BTU/Hr., use 3/4” or 7/8” pipe. From c to d, the demand is =100 BTU/Hr., use 3/4” pipe. From d to e, the demand is =35 BTU/Hr., use 1/2” pipe. From b to f, the demand is =200 BTU/Hr., use 3/4” or 7/8” pipe. From c to g, the demand is =38 BTU/Hr., use 1/2”. From d to h, the demand is =65 BTU/Hr, use 1/2” or 5/8” pipe. 13

3 Gas Safety Guidelines For The Homes : -Make sure home residents know what propane smells like: propane has a strong, unpleasant smell (like rotten eggs or a skunk’s spray). -Show the home residents where the outdoor propane supply and indoor propane appliances are located, and teach them how to turn them off. -Install a carbon monoxide (CO) detector on every level of your home. - Clear the area surrounding gas valves from any objects that could hide its location. -Make a list of instructions on how to turn off electricity, propane, and water supplies, and post the list in a convenient location that is made known to all home residents . -For nighttime operations adequate lighting provided to illuminate storage containers, container being loaded, control valves, and other equipment
4 Can you smell the gas odor? • It may be hard for some people to smell propane for the following reasons: • They have a cold, allergies, sinus congestion, or another medical condition. • Their sense of smell is reduced due to use of tobacco, alcohol, or drugs. • Tobacco smoke, cooking odors, and other strong odors can mask the smell of propane • As people age, their sense of smell can become less sensitive. • If the smell of propane is present in the air over a period of time, “odor fatigue” can occur. The nose “gets tired,” and a person no longer smells the propane odor. • The propane smell may not be strong enough to wake up someone who is sleeping. • The propane smell may be in a location (basement or attic) where it is not detected by people in other areas of the building. • A phenomenon called “odor loss” can occur—an unintended reduction in the concentration of the odor of propane .
