A Message From The Foundation Board of Trustees COAST GUARD COMMUNITY FOUNDATION Welcome Friends and Neighbors, The Cape May County Coast Guard Community Foundation Board of Trustees is hon- ored that you are joining us for the 6th Annual Cape May County Coast Guard Commu- nity Festival, a family-friendly event honoring the men and women of the United States Coast Guard. The festival offers a unique opportunity for our community to tour Training Center Cape May, the Nation’s only “boot camp” for Coast Guard recruits. Activities include tours of Coast Guard vessels and helicopters, thrilling search and rescue demonstrations led by the Air Station Atlantic City, and performances by the Coast Guard Drill Team and Recruit Band. Additional festival offerings include scenic tours of the Cape May Harbor, a maritime-themed Youth Art Show at the Nature Center, a lively Kids’ Zone, delicious food, local brews, vendors, and live entertainment, including local favorite band Blue- bone and the USO Show Troupe from New York City! Founded in 2015, the mission of the Foundation is to nurture the relationships between Coast Guard members and their families and the people of Cape May County. We ac- complish this by developing special programs, supporting the efforts of other organi- zations, and facilitating active engagement between the Coast Guard and Cape May County. We are guided by our desire to be accountable and trustworthy as we strive to deliver excellence because of the value we place on the service of Coast Guard personnel and their families. Significantly, Cape May County is designated as a “Coast Guard Community,” one of a select number of cities and counties in the Nation. The honor is reserved for com- munities that show special support and consideration for the Coast Guard and was awarded after approval by the United States Coast Guard and an act of Congress. The Foundation partners with the County of Cape May, its 16 municipalities, and community organizations throughout the year to present activities that educate about the deep connections between the Coast Guard and the region. Thank you for spending the day with us at the Cape May County Coast Guard Community Festival and kindly visit our webpage (www.coastguardcommunity.org) for a schedule of upcoming events. It is our hope that you will continue to celebrate and honor the men and women of the United States Coast Guard and their important place here in Cape May County throughout the year. Sincerely, Cape May County Coast Guard Community Foundation Board of Trustees Will Morey Clarence F. Lear III Jay Sporl Will Morey, Chairman Clarence F. Lear III Jay Sporl Vicki Clark Jeffrey L. A Message from The Captain South Jersey Community, Cape May County has been designated as a proud “Coast Guard Community” since May of 2015. As we celebrate this important milestone and look forward to the renewal of this designation, there is no better way to highlight Cape May County and its Coast Guard than with the annual Coast Guard Festival, which has grown to a week long series of events - a celebration worthy of the spirit that makes Cape May County the “Hometown of the Coast Guard.” I am proud to say that through continued cooperation and the hard work of county Freeholders, city Mayors, the Chamber of Commerce, and the Coast Guard Community Foundation we will hold the 6th Annual Coast Guard Community Festival May 2, 2020. The celebration will be centered on the Training Center in Cape May and our operational units, and will include events open to the public. We look forward to welcoming you to the Training Center and offer many thanks to the Coast Guard Community Foundation and the many volunteers for making this event such a success for the past five years. As we look forward to the future, it is important to reflect on the relationship between the residents and elected officials of the county and the Coast Guard. Cape May County and the Coast Guard share more than 100 years of history, having grown together, built on a relationship of trust and sus- tained by an invaluable sense of community. We are proud to proclaim that Cape May County is the Coast Guard’s hometown! This could not be said without the dedication everyone of you has shown to ensuring that men and women who serve here feel like family. All of you have embraced our service and supported our members through myriad individual and organi- zational outreach efforts that offered not only kind words, but kind actions. 4

Whether it is thanking our newest volunteers for their services as you see them on their first off-base liberty, organizing events to assist our members in uncertain financial times, or opening your homes during the holidays to more than 300 recruits, it is no wonder that Cape May County earned its designation as a Coast Guard Community, nor why those who serve here feel that we aren’t just the Coast Guard, but your Coast Guard. With more than 80% of our entire workforce receiving their training here, Cape May County is significant to our service’s cultural identity. This is where they take their first steps in uniform and where they learn to live by our core values of Honor, Respect, and Devotion to Duty. They are reborn as Coast Guardsmen here and will forever hold Cape May in their minds as the place where their careers of relevant service began. It is for this reason that we are forever tied to this community in service and in spirit. While the designation as a Coast Guard Community is emblematic of our past relationship, it stems from and is sustained through a pattern of mutual support and engagement. Every five years, our partnership undergoes external scrutiny to ensure it is indeed a vibrant relationship worthy of its moniker. As our community looks at accomplishments already in our wake and toward the horizon of planned engagement through this process, I expect we’ll be astounded to see the full depth and breadth of the impacts we have experienced together. Thank you for lending your support for celebrating your community’s achievement in support of our service. This is an opportunity to showcase to the nation both the pride we have in calling Cape May County home, and the dedication to our service that only the citizens of South Jersey can claim. Semper Paratus, Captain Kathy Felger Commanding Officer Coast Guard Training Center Cape May 5

Hometown Heros of the Year Petty Officer Jason Raffenach Petty Officer Jason Raffenach A nine-year resident of Cape May, Petty Officer Jason Ruffenach has made it a priority to integrate him- self into the community making it his home. PO Ruffenach, an instructor at Training Center Cape May, personally interacts with every recruit and edu- cates them about the history and bond between the City if Cape May and the Coast Guard dating back to 1948. He champions the concept of Cape May being the Coast Guard’s Hometown by explaining its distinction as well as support activities available to recruits during off-base liberty. Additionally, PO Ruffenach promotes participation and attendance in Training Center Cape May’s Sunset Parade program which allows community members to have the unique opportunity to experience honored military traditions. In 2017, PO Ruffenach decided he wanted to assist fellow military members and others with securing housing needs. He obtained his New Jersey Real Estate Salesperson License and devoted his off-base work to helping family, friends, and co-workers rent, buy, and sell homes. PO Ruffenach’s combined United States Coast Guard and real estate involvement in town has helped many military members and their families become part of the Coast Guard Community. 16

On top of his full time duties, PO Ruffenach makes it a priority to give back and volunteer his time to local charities including the DeSatnick Founda- tion Cape to Cape Paddleboard Event and Life Rolls On They Will Surf Again program. PO Ruffenach aids in the planning and safety of the Cape to Cape Paddle alongside the DeSatnick Foundation as well as participates in the event. His volunteer duties include setting up GPS waypoints for paddlers and vessels to follow a course and arranging for the United States Coast Guard/Auxiliary to be a part of the safety fleet, to ensure safe crossing for all participants. PO Ruffenach is also involved with the Life Rolls On They Will Surf Again program which pairs volunteers with those individu- als living with paralysis. He is one of the critical water team leaders, which is an important position, as those living with paralysis put their trust into the water leaders. PO Ruffenach has built strong relationships with fellow volunteers and participants thus making him a highly requested by return- ing participants. PO Ruffenach is someone who goes above and beyond for others with a smile on his face. We are pleased to recognize Petty Officer Jason Ruffenach as a 2020 Hometown Hero award recipient. 17

Hometown Heros of the Year Caleigh Vazquez Caleigh Vazquez Hometown Hero award recipient HS2 Caleigh Vazquez truly embodies the Coast Guard core values of honor, re- spect, and devotion to duty. She goes above and beyond the call of duty to help others in both the Cape May County community and the United States Coast Guard Training Center Cape May. HD2 Vazquez demonstrated kind- ness and unselfish character as she planned and organized a volunteer bike building event at Training Center Cape May which distributed bikes to foster children of Cape May County. Displaying a high level of initiative, she personally raised $2,250 in dona- tions for “Together We Rise”, a non-profit organization which provides bicycles to children in the foster care system. With this level of contribu- tion, the organization was able to deliver twenty unassembled bikes. Leveraging her peer network on base, she put together a team of fifteen volunteers who unpackaged and assembled the bikes, and ensured that the donated bikes were delivered to foster children in Cape May County over the holiday season. HS2 Vazquez’s efforts helped bring a smile and joy during the holiday season to many foster children in the Cape May County area. HS2 Vazquez displayed compassion as she set up a bin at the Health, Safety and Work-Life Service Center Clinic to accept dona- tions for Cape May County’s Coalition Against Rape and Abuse (CARA). The donations consisted of shelf-stable food items and toiletries which are 18

needed for CARA shelter residents. The donated supplies were brought to CARA shelters and greatly assisted in providing residents the resources needed to recover from traumatic experiences. Additionally, HS2 Vaz quez is an active member of the TRACEN Cape May Leadership and Diversity Advisory Committee (LDAC). The group plans events that celebrate diversity, inclusion, and professional develop- ment for all members of the Cape May Coast Guard Community. In this capacity, HS2 Vazquez personally organized a 5k Pride Run in June of 2019 to celebrate LGBT Pride Month. This included setting up the race route, advertising the event, coordinating security, and running all race- day logistics. The event was attended by over 100 active duty, family members, Auxiliarists, civilians, contractors, and recruits. She also helped plan events celebrating Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, Black History Month, and Women’s History M onth. In October, HS2 Vazquez and other LDAC members volunteered with the Nature Center of Cape May. The group helped paint a mural on one of the buildings, and they completed various repair and ground maintenance projects to support the non-profit organization’s mission to educate residents of Cape May County. Above all, HS2 Caleigh Vazquez truly inspires everyone she meets with her positive attitude, tenacious work ethic, and dedication to her community. She goes above and beyond to make people feel included and respected. As a Health Service Technician, she shows the utmost compassion to all patients. This includes the 4,000 annual recruits that receive their boot camp medical screening at Cape May Clinic. We are pleased and honored to acknowledge HS2 Caleigh Vazquez has a 2020 Hometown Hero Award recipient. 19

This award is presented to a community member or or- ganization that goes above the call of duty to embrace the Coast Guard as part of the Cape May County com- munity. The staff of La Mer has developed a comprehensive “Day Leave” package that includes complimentary 20

transportation to and from the base, day use of La Mer accommodations, one large pizza, exclusive discounts from local area businesses, compli- mentary WiFi, and access to the on-site fitness facility. Throughout the past year, many Coast Guard recruits have truly enjoyed the opportunity to unwind and enjoy the uniqueness and grandeur that La Mer Beachfront Inn and the city of Cape May have to offer. Additionally, the La Mer Beachfront Inn offers a generous discount for members of the Coast Guard visiting La Mer and the Pier House Restau- rant. This includes family members who have traveled from near or far to celebrate a loved one’s graduation from Training Center Cape May. La Mer’s dedication and commitment to the Coast Guard Family in Cape May County is one of the many reasons that Training Center Cape May is the best place to live, work, and visit for the Coast Guard. La Mer Beachfront Inn truly goes above and beyond to embrace the Coast Guard members living and working in Cape May County as well as those visiting Training Center Cape May.
