By fall, S-VHS blank tapes, VCRs and camcorders were ROSEANNE BARR off the assembly lines and onto store shelves, along with TVs featuring the Y/C SAM KINISON connectors necessary to achieve the full benefit of Super VHS. Also in January, BOB NELSON Sony announced its enhanced subformat, Extended-Definition Beta. Equipment and tapes will be available in the United States by spring or summer '88. JERRY SEINFELD Meanwhile, driven partly by the specter of a Super VHS-supplied picture ROBERT TOWNSEND whose quality is better than broadcast, the race to find an acceptable high definition TV system (with a horizontal resolution of 1,000 lines or more) shifted into high AVAILABLE gear. Europe’s D2-Mac system debuted in Germany in October, while Japan’s pub- ON VIDEOCASSETTE lic TV network, NHK, announced it would begin broadcasting in its high-definition MUSE system in 1989. Also in early October, in an apparent attempt to head off CSFaRi7Ncoaieond9enr.rfdacdvoild.irteecmireaotniaoln, ORION U.S. adoption of these or other HD systems, NBC and GE/RCA announced they would broadcast Advanced Compatible Television (ACTV) by 1989. All Rights Reserved. high number of technical advances: monitors with better resolution, VCRs with new digital enhancements, TVs with more sophisticated stereo and surround Rodney Dangerfield Photo by Barbara Waltz/Onyx, sound, sharper LCD TVs and camcorders with high-speed shutters. There were other “firsts,” such as Panasonic’s bar code programmer and Toshiba’s light pen VCR, Akai’s Quick Start VCRs, a $1,000 electronic still camera from Casio and even a camcorder for kids. There were the usual red herrings, too. Last January, Samsung introduced, in prototype, a small camcorder using 4 mm DAT cassettes for video pictures. The company has yet to deliver. In mid-year, preceded by much fanfare, came CD-Vid- eo. Its peculiar combination of five minutes of audio/video followed by 20 minutes of audio (at exorbitant prices for both discs and players) elicited more boos than bravos—and very few discs to support it. Clearly, however, the year was a feast for videophiles. This month’s issue re- flects that, with a holiday menu of some of the year’s most appealing video treats. Broderick’s Clocking In: primate project Francis Coppola brings his directorial magic to Faerie Tale Theater's ‘Rip Van Winkle.’ When Matthew Broderick was first in- troduced to his ProjectX co-star, “He took my hand and put his face on it.” Such a greeting might be considered gauche, even by Hollywood standards but, Broderick explains, “Chimps have to get used to your smell first,” so no one complained.
