In London in the 1950’s, the air waspolluted each winter with a mixture of smoke and fog called smog. Sometimes, people died frombreathing the smog in the streets.10
Today, we burn smokeless fuels and oil instead ofcoal, so there is not much smoke in the atmosphere. Butthere are more people in the world, and we have come torely so much on oil and other fossil fuels that we can’t helpusing them. Power stations burn coal to make electricity, andproduce a gas called sulphur dioxide. Cars produce fumesand nitrogen oxide gases. You may have seen the smokebillowing out of factory chimneys, turning the air aroundthem a dirty gray-brown. All these gases react with each other in complicated ways in the air. Sometimes the gases canget into rain clouds, where they get mixed in the rain or snow. This is called acid rain, and in someparts of the world, in Germany and Sweden, for instance, it is killing forests. Acid rain is alsoharmful to plants, and may contaminate lakes and rivers, and the creatures that inhabit them. Sometimes these gases form a layer around the Earth, trapping the sun’s heat the way glasswarms a greenhouse. The best known greenhouse gas is carbon dioxide, and it is produced whenpeople breathe, and when we burn fuel.
