There was once a King who ruled harshly over his land. He thought of himself as the greatest ruler on earth and in heaven. He was proud of his riches, and the vast forest in his kingdom where he often went hunting. Early one morning, while in the deep woods, he decided to cool himself in the lake. He proudly swam away from the shore. Suddenly there came from the bottom of the lake someone who had the same face and form as the king. This man quickly put on the King’s clothes and drove away with the King’s horse. When the proud King finished cooling himself, he found his clothes and his horse already gone. With some woven reeds covering his body, he walked to the castle. He beat loudly at the gate, but he was driven away. He went to the duke’s hall, but he was put to prison. Working hard, he loosened the chains that bound his feet and fled away. He went to his palace, but no one recognized him. Instead, he was beaten up and was thrown outside the palace. The proud King fled. He wished he was dead. Reaching the lake where he had bathed, he cried aloud. He asked for forgiveness. From: English For All Times p 215A. Let’s Study David was a shepherd boy who became a king. Find out how this happened. Read this story. There was once a shepherd boy in Israel named David. Almost all day long, he stayed up on the hills. There he wandered with his flock of sheep and goats, seeking good pasture. When the animals needed water, he drew some from the nearby wells. On summer nights, he slept with his animals under the sky. He curled up in his rough sheepskin coat. In the winter months, he slept in a tent, cave, or under a stone to be near his flock always. His usual meal was bread, cheese and olives. The hours of labor were long. Most of the time, David cheered himself by playing his lyre and composing songs. 3F:\SIMs ENGLISH IV & VI\Grade 5 -English Sim\9-Sequencing Major Ideas_Concepts.doc Printed: 9/17/2015 11:02:00 AM [Ferdie]
The songs he composed are psalms found in the Bible. Among the psalms david had written is the one below. PSALM 23 The Lord is my Shepherd, I have everything I need. He lets me rest in fields of green grass and leads me to quiet pools of fresh water. He gives me new strength He guides me in the right paths, as He promised. Even if I go to the deepest darkness, I will not be afraid, Lord. for You are with me. Your shepherd’s rod and staff protect me. You prepare a banquet for me. where all my enemies can see me. You welcome me as an honored guest, and fill my cup to the brim I know that your goodness and love will be with me all my life. And your house will be my home As long as I live. Like other shepherds, David carried a club, almost three-feet long to protect his flock against any human or animal predator. He also carried a leather sling, which he had made for himself. With it he could throw a stone. Sometimes even from a far distance, he hits with great accuracy. The club and the sling were very useful to David. 4F:\SIMs ENGLISH IV & VI\Grade 5 -English Sim\9-Sequencing Major Ideas_Concepts.doc Printed: 9/17/2015 11:02:00 AM [Ferdie]
At that time, King Saul ruled Israel. King Saul needed someone who could cure his melancholy. The servants recommended David. Young David played his lyre and sang for the King. Saul was delighted. He became happy. The King came to love young David and appointed him armor-bearer. But King Saul had another problem. The Philistines were up to conquer Israel. Among them was the giant Goliath. The giant shouted to the Israelites. “Choose a brave man and let him challenge me. We will fight. If he kills me, we will be your servants. But if I kill him, then you will be our servants.” David happened to be there. His father had asked him to go there on an errand. He noticed that not one in King Saul’s army dared accept Goliath’s challenge. So he offered to fight the giant. King Saul tried to stop David. But the boy did not heed his warning. Quickly he ran to the battle line to meet the giant. To the amazement of both armies, the young shepherd hit the huge giant with a stone hurled from his sling. He then reached to the giant’s body and took the sword. At once he cut off Goliath’s head. In a moment the Philistines had lost a battle, and Israel had a new hero. 5F:\SIMs ENGLISH IV & VI\Grade 5 -English Sim\9-Sequencing Major Ideas_Concepts.doc Printed: 9/17/2015 11:02:00 AM [Ferdie]

The Basilica of Batangas The Philippines is the only Catholic country in Asia it prides itself for having the biggest church in the whole Southeast Asia. Taal is an old Tagalog word which means ‘native’ or ‘local’. It is also known a town in the province of Batangas, only three hours away from Manila. Taal is known for its Basilica, one of the oldest churches in the country that offers a clue to our rich heritage from the past. The first church in Taal was built by the Augustinian priest Fr. Albuquerque in 1572. In 1754, the town of Taal, including the church, was destroyed by the most violent eruption over in the history of Taal Volcano. The church was rebuilt in 1800. Later on, a strong earthquake in 1849 destroyed the church again. Fr. Marcos Anton rebuilt the church in 1856. Don Luciano Oliver, a distinguished Filipino architect, designed the church. It tool almost ten years to build the Basilica. The townspeople donated the materials. The Basilica’s titular saint is St. Martin of Tours, whose feast day is November 11. Its centennial, or 100th anniversary, was held on November 11, 1966. Our Lady of Caysasay, whose feast is December 9, is the other titular saint. It is believed that the image of the miraculous Virgin of Caysasay was taken out of the Pansipit River, which connects Balayan Bay and Lake Taal, in 1603. The image stayed perfectly preserved in water for 30 years. It is said that the image was accidentally dropped into the river by General Salcedo, who once conquered the province of Taal. In 1903, the 300th anniversary of Our Lady of Caysasay was attended by pilgrims from different provinces. From the church tower, one can get a good view of Balayan Bay, Taal Volcano and its lake, and Mindoro. The church is 35 7F:\SIMs ENGLISH IV & VI\Grade 5 -English Sim\9-Sequencing Major Ideas_Concepts.doc Printed: 9/17/2015 11:02:00 AM [Ferdie]
