THE BOY WHO WOULDN’T GO TO SCHOOL “But I don’t want to go to school,” Hans cried. “I like everythingjust the way it is.” Young Hans was blessed with loving parents. Although hisparents were poor – a shoemaker and a washerwoman – they didthe best that they could for their son. They spent long hours tellinghim stories and even saved to take him to theater. Hans dreamt ofbecoming a famous actor. That was all he could think of. One day, off to school he went. On the first day of school, Hans was fascinated by the clock. Hewatched it all day. Finally the teacher became cross with him. Thatnight Hans said, “I don’t like that school. Don’t send me back!” So his parents found him another school, then another, andanother, but none of them pleased him so he decided never to goto school anymore. About that time, Hans’ father died. He needed to work to helphis mother make a living. Hans worked in a factory where people came to like himbecause he would always sing and tell them stories. He sang for therich men in their place too. Soon, they arranged for him to meet the king, hoping that theking would send Hans to a good school to be a better singer. But Hans still wanted nothing to do with school. He just wantedto be famous. He acted for the king but the king wasn’t pleasedwith his acting. The king told Hans that he should go back to his job. About that time, he didn’t want to go back to his job nor toschool. He decided to make himself famous in the big city. So offto the city, he went. 5

He thought he knew how to become famous, “First you sufferterrible things,” he said. “Then you get to be famous.” For years, he did suffer terrible things. He tried to act, dance, and write poems to become famous, but success was nowhere tobe found. Finally, some friends told him that he should go back toschool. Back to school? Now that he’s seventeen? Why should he goback to school and be laughed at in second grade? Surely he wastoo smart for that. Well, right then and there, Hans proved that he really was smartby going to school! It wasn’t easy. He was taller than his teacher.Every one made fun of him. But at last he passed his universityexamination. And if you’ve ever read “The Ugly Duckling,” “The LittleMermaid,” or “The Emperor’s New Clothes,” you know that HansChristian Andersen did learn to write. Not much is known of his early life except that he was poor and that he began to make sea voyages when he was quite young. For a while he lived in Lisbon, Portugal, where he married the daughter of a navigator. Columbus studied charts and read about navigation and instruments. When he made up his mind to look for a westward route to the East, he tried to have interest in the City of Genoa in his bold plan but failed. Isabella of Spain who agreed to send the expedition after eight years when he pledged his jewels to help pay for it. Columbus sailed with 100 men in his three small ships. The prevailing trade winds took them in southwesternly directions. His sailors became frightened and wanted to turn back and some of them even threatened to throw Columbus overboard if he refused to return. Nevertheless, the ships sailed on and the men got encouraged when they saw birds and floating grasses in the sea. One night in October, they sighted the island named San Salvador which means “Holy Savior.” After Columbus’ voyages, many sailors were sent out to new colonies. One of them was a merchant named Amerigo Vespucci who found Brazil and Rio de Janeiro. The two colonies came to be called America. When Columbus came to America, he called the natives Indians because he thought he had reached the Indies. Because of Columbus’ achievements, Queen Isabella made him a member of Spanish nobility and Admiral of the Sea, and Viceroy of all Spain’s land in the west. Columbus died in 1506 a poor and unhappy man. Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AmericanOldWest Answer the following questions in your notebook. 1. Who discovered America? 2.
