CONGRATULATIONS! As well as being PCC Secretary, manning the Foodbank, posting daily reflections, working and looking after the family, Gemma has been studying for her Local Lay Ministry Certificate. She is now a “graduate!” Thankyou! I would like to say thank you for all the support and prayers over the past 10 months of me working towards completing my lay ministry training specialising in pastoral care- the encouragement, kind words and answers to my sometimes very random questions have really helped me focus on where God is leading me. I have just submitted my final essay and now looking forward to a break from essay writing before starting the pioneer ministry course in September and seeing where this takes not only me but also us as a Church! Gemma Gemma’s Local Lay Minister Certificate Award ceremony will take place on the 17th July 2021 at Brough Castle at Kirby Stephen. One of the great things brought about by Covid is that Gemma and her class have been able to complete their studies in double quick time. God has everything in hand! One of Gemma’s worries was the practicalities of getting to and from the course as she does not drive. Well she didn’t need to leave home! We give thanks for the great gift of the digital age. We hadn’t even heard of Zoom last year and here we do everything by it now. Well done Gemma, you good and faithful servant! We wish you every blessing in your ministry and look forward to serving alongside you. Maria & the team 4

Something to think about… “The people we surround ourselves with either raise or lower our standards. They either help us become the best version of ourselves or encourage us to become lesser versions of ourselves. We become like our friends. No man becomes great on his own. No woman becomes great on her own. The people around them help to make them great. We all need people in our lives who raise our standards, remind us of our essential purpose, and challenge us to become the best version of ourselves” (Matthew Kelly, The Rhythm of Life: Living Everyday with Passion and Purpose) Who around you are building you up? Are you showing God’s love in all that you do? What can you do to challenge others to be the best version of themselves? Gemma Refresh Online 2021 Preparations are underway for the Refresh Online Ladies Day which will take place on 4 September. It will be a time of good bible teaching, heartfelt worship, prayer and testimony (amongst other offerings). Organisers are encour- aging people to watch this in clusters this year, with an open invite for men to join too. More than 500 people viewed last year's Refresh Online content. Men’s Breakfast restarts on the first Saturday of the month, starting again on Saturday 3rd July. Please check if this is going ahead as we will still beun- der restrictions on this date. Meet at the Royal Scot on Langrigg Road at 10am for a good breakfast and a good craic. On Saturday 2nd October, Dr Andrew Brittlebank (Consultant Psychiatrist & Associate Medical Director, Cumbria & Northumberland) will be leading a Men’s Health Breakfast. 5

(Menus will be available) Families with children aged between 5 and 16 should come together. Children must be accompanied by an adult. It’s not a drop off and leave the kids! Volunteers are needed to help run all of the above events, so if you feel able to help with either the activities or the lunches, first aid or crafts, please come along to a Volunteers meeting on Saturday 26th June at St Barnabas at 10am or Sunday 18th July at 2.30pm at St Luke’s or better still contact Maria , Peter, Matt or Gemma as soon as possible in person to sort out Safeguarding and Risk Assessments. We have received a large grant from the County Council to fund these healthy families community activities in the TP4C area and the money is earmarked for this. It is not a general grant to any particular church. 6

Let’s talk about money! In common with many churches throughout the country, TP4C has suffered badly financially throughout the pandemic. Unfortunately, the Church of England doesn’t give its churches money! Each church is supposed to pay a Parish Share to fund our clergy and there is no extra help with gas, electricity, water, insurance, copyright or general maintenance for our buildings. Churches also have to pay standard fees to the Diocese for the weddings and funerals which take place in our churches. YOUR CHURCH RUNS ON YOUR DONATIONS! Our parishes were already running at a deficit before the pandemic and the closure of Holy Trinity Church as well as withdrawal from Sandsfield have been forced by our poor financial situation. We would have needed at least 50 people per church to donate at least £1000 per year to keep them ticking over. We have had some bequests, and £16000 from David Jones’ estate has allowed us to pay outstanding fees to the Diocese. The remainder of his generous legacy has gone to replenish restricted funds. In order to run services at both St Barnabas and St Luke’s, we need some technical equipment (2 projectors, a screen, a computer, a camera and a load of leads and connections) This will cost about £750 +. If you can donate on a regular basis and you pay tax, it can be by Gift Aid and our churches receive an extra 25% from the government. You can donate by cash, cheque, standing order, direct debit and even Contactless with the new machines at both churches. Please pray about this and consider your own contributions to St Barnabas and St Luke’s churches. It is too late to save Holy Trinity and Sandsfield. Let’s hope we can keep St Barnabas and St Luke’s running as churches. Alison Sayer: Holy Trinity congregation 7

ORDINATION Richard Corrie, who was brought up at St Barnabas, will be ordained Deacon at Carlisle Cathedral on Saturday 26th June..Please pray for him as he continues his lifelong journey towards Ministry. Creator, Redeemer and Sustainer God, who you call your faithful people into a life of service, help us to nurture and hold in love all those who are ordained at this time in the life of your Church. Teach us your ways, that we might recognise your Mission in the world, your compassion in caring for others, and your love deep within every human heart. We ask this in your Holy Name, as one undivided Trinity of love, now and for evermore. Amen Parish Prayer Loop: Maria Holmes : Speak to her! Doubting Thomas If you have ever doubted aspects of your Christian faith, St Thomas is the saint for you. His feast day is on 3rd July. Thomas, one of Jesus’ 12 disciples, was deeply devoted, but also very honest whenever he got confused. When Jesus spoke of going to his Father (John 14), Thomas was not afraid to ask Him where His Father was. As for the Resurrec- tion, that really baffled Thomas. He demanded to see the risen Jesus for himself - and touch the wounds in His hands and feet. When Jesus appeared, Thomas’ immediate response was one of worship: “My Lord and my God” (John 20). Thus, Doubting Thomas’ honest doubts, turned to honest faith, have become a reassurance for thousands of us down the centuries who also sometimes doubt Jesus. In Doubting Thomas’ complete affirmation of faith, after meeting the ris- en, crucified Christ, we can find support for our own faith in Him. From Maria Give thanks for the blessings of funding for our summer activities, for the funding for girls group, for the funding for Community meal, for the funding and the blessing that little Fishes is to our Community, we give thanks to the County Council, Carlisle City Council, Cumbria Community Foundation for blessing us so that we can bless others. Give thanks to all those who support our Food bank, what a blessing you are to the people in our Community. Give thanks for our volunteers who faithfully pray and carry and pack and lug heavy loads about so that people are blessed. Give thanks for the vaccines and the great work in getting people vaccinated. We give thanks that you never leave us Lord! Psalm 23 verse 4 “Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me, your rod and your staff, they comfort me. Notice the word THROUGH, he doesn’t leave us there, he brings us out through the otherside! Give thanks that even though we have no singing and continue to wear our masks we can still do our keep fit songs with Matt! Friday Blessings - During Lockdown we read the great book The Grace Outpour- ing? Where we read about a remote retreat in Wales where a life of prayer and service to the Lord changed the atmosphere of the area, the retreat and surrounding areas were blessed so much that it was reported when people put their foot on the chapel floor they collapsed in the Holy Spirit. Where they have erected a cross on the hill and people fall down in the presence of God. The staff and volunteers pray three times a day and on a Friday they pray blessing on people, their land and their area. There have been reports of great blessings, prosperity, strong and fertile animals, the area began to prosper and the retreat is a beacon of light that people cannot walk by. Oh how to be in the presence of the Lord! It would be wonderful if people could commit to our prayer meetings and pray blessings on our churches, the people who attend them, the local community, the local businesses and the seeds that we are sowing throughout the community. Speaking in Tongues – G7 Summit and World Prayer Centre Testimony We often hear of people speaking in tongues and when you first see someone speaking in tongues it can take you by surprise! It is written in the bible that people will speak in tongues! Well at the G7 Summit in 2021 , the world prayer centre had committed to praying for world leaders at the same time. There were intercessors and prayer meetings via our new friend Zoom from all over the world and of course Wigton! With our dear friend Brenda taking part. Brenda shared this witness to speaking in Tongues! If you know Brenda you will be aware that this is something she does all the time. Well there was an intercessor who was prayer walking the streets and speaking in tongues when a man from another country, came up and asked him why he had said all those things? The intercessor was shocked but the man had understood every word as it was a message from God for him. The man gave his life to Christ there and then! Hallelujah. 16

Little Fishes. Little Fishes has now been back up and running for six weeks. We meet on a Tuesday morning at 10am at St Luke’s and on a Tuesday afternoon at St Barna- bas at 1.30pm. Over these six weeks we have had regular contact with 23 fami- lies! Some of these families have come back and joined us after the year of lock- down, some of the children are getting baptised in our churches over the next few months and one family is getting married at St Luke’s in July! How amazing is this! There is so much more to Little Fishes than children coming to play- this is their Church. We start with a welcome, some worship songs followed by a bible story, we then make time to play with some toys and enjoy a simple craft. We enjoy snacks while parents/carers have a cup of tea/coffee/hot chocolate and then come together to enjoy some more singing with the musical instruments. The growth we are seeing in our relationships with these families is amazing- we are providing a fun, safe place for them to come and learn about Jesus- in return they are filling our Tuesdays with lots of fun and laughter! Our God is providing us with some amazing opportunities to share his love in our communities- Thank you Lord! Gemma Foodbank Our TP4C foodbank is a practical outpouring of love for our communities. We are hearing from different people every week the realities of being in difficult situations some of us have never found ourselves in. In the past couple of weeks, we have had three new families come to us for help- that works out at an extra 5 adults and 10 children- We have also seen some families stop receiving help as their situations have now changed for the better. We currently sit with between 35 and 40 families receiving food a week. Families which range from single people to families of nine. Each bag we pack contains more than food items, they contain love and prayers. They are a real blessing to those who receive them. If you are able to, please do consider making a donation- however big or small each one is appreciated and helps to ensure full tummies for those who receive help from us. Big shout out of thanks to the foodbank volunteers- Haley, Yvonne (and Raymond), Jannette, Pete, Matt, Seth and Manouka! Gemma 18

Walk the Way Mission: It’s NOW!!!! Luke 10 1-23 Jesus sends out the 72 - This a great story where the early disciples were sent out to share the good news, to heal, to pray. They were sent out with just what they stood in with no purse, food, etc. Maria is very excited to be taking part in another Mission with Through Faith Mission as we come out of Lockdown! Just as the 72 we will be walking out in Faith with no plans for food or accommodation. She will be taking part in week 3 of Walk The Way the first week in July and would greatly appreciate your support in prayer. Walk the Way is a major mission that TFM is planning for 2021. We plan to walk right across the UK from St David's in the West to Lowestoft in the East, tarting at both ends and meeting in the middle. We will broadly follow the route of the 'Via Beata' footpath. The route will be split into 22 sections and teams of up to ten members will cov- er a section a week, a total of 11 weeks (11 from each end). Here comes the difference!! In recent years most of our missions have been carefully planned. In collaboration with local churches we have arranged accommodation and meals for team members and churches have prepared events and outreach oppor- tunities. Walk The Way will be different. We recognise that many small rural churches are in crises, with crumbling buildings, few members and little money. We will be stepping out in faith that each day God will provide the accommodation that we need but not necessarily what we want! Tim Hall, TFM's CEO writes: “This is going to be tough, stretching and completely out of your comfort zone. Leave technology behind. Expect to finish the walk a transformed person. Is God calling you to join us?” Please keep praying for Maria and all those who take part in Through Faith Missions. Walk the Way will begin 27th June , I will be doing West leg 3, right by Ffald de Brinn! (Grace Outpouring) Yeah! I would appreciate prayer. Maria 20

God’s Promises in Scunthorpe In June our family experienced every family’s worst nightmare where we had to lay to rest a young member of our family who had sadly taken his own life. In the darkest of times when you life is spinning out of control when those that you love are in so much pain that your heart feels like it will break, the verse “Remember I am with you always!” can be heard deep inside, quietly at first, a soft gentle whisper, but if you listen and you hear it, it grows louder and loud- er. Sadly many of our young people today do not know our God, our Saviour Jesus Christ and have never heard of the Holy Spirit. What they know is the lies that are whispered, that they are worthless, that everyone would be better off without them, that nobody cares about them or loves them. They have been deceived! But when you know God and believe in Jesus and have encountered the Holy Spirit some very special things can happen in the darkness. I had the great privilege to stand alongside my family in the darkest of times and speak of Jesus, to pray with them and to have answer to prayer whilst we were there. I also met a street homeless man with severe, mental health problems whom I was able to share some food with, ask him about what had happened to him, if he knew where to get help. I had 10 minutes before bought a little book called “God’s promises” and was looking forward to reading it, but when I met this man and looked into his eyes I knew he was to have the book. He said he could not read, so I asked if I could pray with him and he said “Yes” I prayed those promises over him and he said “ Thanks Love” . What a blessing! Maria If you are worried about a member of your own family, please pick up one of the little self-help handouts from Matt or pick up a few and leave them in appropri- ate places: at the bus stop or on the bus, on a park bench, on a pub or café table. When we feel shaken (Luke 10:42) Faithful Father, When we feel shaken by the events of the past; when we don’t know quite how to go forward; when our confidence in what we thought we could control is undermined; remind us that one thing is needed – to sit at your feet and listen to You. You are our security. You will never fail those who belong to You through faith in Your Son, Jesus. As we take time to listen to You, Lord, and to meditate on Your Holy Spirit- inspired Word, may we know Your peace – and Your good plans for us. In Jesus’ name, Amen. By Daphne Kitching 21

What do you want from tp4c? Have you filled in the form to have your say about our church- es? Thank you to those who have done already. If you haven’t been able to pick one up from church, just send your ideas, thoughts, questions ,visions and dreams to Alan Sayer ([email protected]) or jot them on a piece of paper and hand it to him or leave it in the Parish Office Don’t just say “they” should do something about it, tell us ! We don’t have a time machine either, so it’s no good telling us what should have happened! However....we do want to hear from everybody whether you have only been to church once in your life and never want to come again or if you come to everything the church has to offer, young, old, in-between....you are the church and we need to know what you think the tp4c churches should be like. This is a Thank You to everyone who has kept TP4C going throughout the pandemic. Thank you particularly to Matt, Haley and Seth for being there all the time and keeping everything together. (Zoom, IT, setting out, packing up, Foodbank, moving stuff, services from home, special events, prayer groups, vestry hour and making sure all the rules were followed every time they changed.....) Thank you to Yvonne and Jannette, to John and Angela, to Peter and Margaret, to Gemma, Eryn and Aileen, to Maria, Geoff, Richard, Ruby. Thank you for Little Fishes, Foodbank, Girls Group.... And thank you to everyone who has trusted us to keep you all safe and coming back to church on a Sunday morning even though we can’t sing or chat, at least we can keep in touch with you all. THANK YOU! Let’s hope we can celebrate together again after 19th July! EDI 22 N

ST BARNABAS WITH HOLY TRINITY MOTHERS UNION Written on behalf of Deanery Leader Jill Richardson. Jill has asked me to update you on what MU is up to in the Diocese and some provisional dates which have been planned. Elections – You will probably have heard from Susan Johnson with the preliminary papers for the election of a new Diocesan President and 2 Vice Presidents. And she will send information about election of new Deanery Leaders in due course. Wave of Prayer Friday July 30th at 2.30pm. Please ask your members, if they can, to use the service printed in the MU News and as suggested with Advent Praise and Lady Day have a cuppa and cake to pause and think of other members you know. The Trustees have set provisional dates for other activities but the surge in Covid cases means they will only be possible if the regulations allow. August 9th Mary Sumner Day. A fund raising sponsored walk for the Summer of Hope appeal will be 145Km (to number of years MU has worked in this Diocese) walk which some of the trustees have signed up to but more walkers are needed. Full details will be available soon but if people cannot walk then encourage them to sponsor others. October 13th AGM, Council and Sharing Day at Shap. October 20th – 22nd The retreat at Rydal Hall with Penny Driver as the leader. Full details in the magazine. November 6th(Saturday) Provincial End of Triennium Service in Liverpool. Coach travel will be arranged if appropriate. November 13th (Saturday) Diocesan End of Triennium Service in Carlisle Cathedral. Jill would like your views on whether you would be ready for a face to face leaders gathering in September and also whether Advent Praise should be planned for later in the year. You can ring her on 01228-792151 or email me and I will pass the message on to Jill. MUFIN bags. Kath and Ethel have sent 20 bags to the Women’s Refuge and 20 bags to Carlisle Key, and now the hospital has requested them again ,there is an urgent need for face cloths, towel and toothbrushes and of course the usual items as always needed too. So if you can help with these items or a donation for their purchase please let Ethel or Kath know. The demand for ‘Cross in a pocket’ seems insatiable so please keep them coming. Finally, thank you for your efforts to keep your members together in these trying circumstances. With every blessing Jill Andrews Deanery Secretary. 23
