ในการถ่ายทอดลักษณะทางพันธุกรรมจะมีหน่วยควบคุมลักษณะ ( genetic unit) ควบคุม สิ่งมีชีวิต ให้มีรูปร่าง และลักษณะเป็นไปตามเผ่าพันธุ์ของพ่อแม่ เรียกว่า ยีน สิ่งมีชีวิตส่วนใหญ่แต่ละชนิดประกอบขึ้นด้วยเพศที่แตกต่างกัน คือ เพศผู้และเพศเมีย ลูกที่เกิดขึ้น จะพัฒนามาจากเซลล์เพศผู้ คือ สเปิร์ม(Sperm) และเซลล์เพศเมีย คือ เซลล์ไข่ (Egg) มารวมตัวกันโดยกระบวนการสืบพันธุ์
