Regional English Training Centre Project (“Boot Camp”) Follow-on activities Primary Teacher Diary By Miss Wanpen Suyara (Group 2) Teacher

Task 1: Record yourself giving instructions to an activity Pre-task 1) Choose an activity to use with your students e.g. an information gap / find someone who . . . etc. 2) Think about how you will set up the activity (e.g. put students into pairs) and make notes of instructions you will give to students (e.g. “find your partner”) “students stand up please” “Mach the word with the correct picture” “Stick the word and the picture on the board” “Repeat after teacher” “Read the words together” “Tell the meaning” Task 3) Record yourself in class giving instructions to the activity (either audio or video) Post-task 4) Did your students understand what to do? How do you know? The students can understand what to do because they can follow the instruction correctly. 5) Did you have any problems giving instructions? If so, what? Yes, some student misunderstand because they don’t know the meaning of instruction.

6) Listen to the recording and note down the instructions you actually used: 7) Tick ( ∕ ) the clear instructions you used e.g. “please stand up and make a line” ∕ “students stand up please” ( ∕ ) “Mach the word with the correct picture” ( ∕ ) “Stick the word and the picture on the board” ( ∕ ) “Repeat after teacher” ( ∕ ) “Read the words together” ( ∕ ) “Tell the meaning” ( ∕ ) (∕) 8) Underline instructions that could be improved, and write down how you would change them e.g. “Everyone yes take a seat sit down yes take a seat over there on your chair please” – “everyone please sit down”. “students stand up please” 9) If you did the same activity again, what would you do differently? I will use the words more easy and short. I will check their understanding by asking them and always use English instruction to students.

Task 2: Teach a set of new vocabulary Pre-task 1) Choose a set of new vocabulary to teach your class. Plan how to elicit each word from your students: word Elicitation technique Teacher’s questions/actions 1. sunny 2.rainny Visual aid: Flashcard/picture What’s the weather like today? 3. cloudy Visual aid: Flashcard/picture What’s the weather like today? 4. snowy Visual aid: Flashcard/picture What’s the weather like today? 5. foggy Visual aid: Flashcard/picture What’s the weather like today? 6.windy Visual aid: Flashcard/picture What’s the weather like today? 7. stormy Visual aid: Flashcard/picture What’s the weather like today? Visual aid: Flashcard/picture What’s the weather like today? 2) What activities will you use to help your students understand the meaning of the new vocabulary? Teacher has students see the picture and lets them do the actions that relate with the words.

Task 3) Teach the vocabulary and do the activities with your class Post-task 4) What went well? The students enjoy learning the new vocabulary by doing the actions. They can understand the meaning and they can remember the vocabulary easily. 5) What didn’t go so well? Why? Some student can’t read the word and some of them can’t remember the meaning because they lack of the knowledge about alphabet sound. 6) What could you do better next time? I will let them play hangman game to help them remember the word and let them enjoy learning the new words.

Task 3: Use a variety of interaction patterns in your classroom Pre-task 1) Plan activities to do with your students this week that involve a variety of interaction patterns and seating arrangements (e.g. individual, pairs, groups, whole class, mingle etc.): Task 2) Take photos of the different classroom seating arrangements that you use in your class. Bring the photos to the sessions. Be ready to talk about what’s happen in each picture. Activity: story telling Interaction pattern: Whole class Seating arrangement:

Activity: Picture dictation Interaction pattern: Groups Seating arrangement: Activity: Role play Interaction pattern: Pairs Seating arrangement: Post-task 3) Which interaction pattern(s) worked best in your classroom? Why?

Group pattern worked best in my classroom because the students likes to do the activities in group. They don’t afraid to answer the teacher and they can help each other to finish the task in time. 4) Did you have any problems with any of the interaction patterns? If so, what? The students don’t like pair pattern because some of them doesn’t give the participation and doesn’t help each other to finish the task. 5) If you did the activities again, would you change any of the interaction patterns / seating arrangements? If so, how? I will change the interaction pattern into “U pattern” because this pattern can do many activities and the students can have the area in the middle for present their work. Task 4: Plan a lesson and compare it with the actual lesson 1) Plan a 50-minute lesson for one of your classes. Compare the left-hand column with a brief lesson plan (use a separate sheet of paper if necessary). Leave the right-hand column blank.

But the time is different because some stage take time a lot especially warmer stage. 5) How would you change the lesson plan if you taught the lesson again? Think about stage and timing. I will manage time to appropriate for each stage and using more teaching materials to make students understand the contents easily. Task 5: Adapt a game for different classes Pre-task 1) Choose one new game to try with your classes this week. Think about how you will adapt the game for different classes of students. Primary school 4 because the sentences quite difficult for them and it’s hard to understand. The students can’t draw the picture correctly. 5) What would you change / do different next time? I will try the different game and make the game more challenged to let students feel fun. Make the game easier and choose the game that appropriate for the content.
