SUMMARY- HBCU TOUR Visited 10 schools 5 public, 5 private. 8 coed, 2 female (Spelman and Bennett). 7 in south, 3 in north. 280 to 10,300 student bodies. No school offered course on Entrepreneurial Finance. 689 students attended More black students taught Entrepreneurial Finance than at any institution in America. 69 students average per school. 110 students (SRO) was largest attendance at Howard University. 28 students was lowest attendance at Stillman College (60 signed up but temperature was 21 degrees, one of coldest mornings in Alabama). 72 of Bennett’s 280 students attended. 6
HBCU FACT DISCOVERIES 101 schools in 19 states. 300,000 students. Tuition ranges from $5,000 to $28,000. Among 101 HBCUs, Howard University has largest endowment of with $692.8M; median is $12M. Over 70% students receive Pell Grants. Notable alums include Dr. King, Oprah Winfrey, Thurgood Marshall, Common, Kamala Harris, and Marian Wright Edelman. HBCUs produce degrees earned by black students throughout the country: 16% of bachelor degrees. 22% of bachelor degrees in stem fields. 31% of biological science degrees. 31% of math degrees. 21% of business and management degrees. 7
HBCU FACT DISCOVERIES Over 60% of students are low-income, first generation. 22% of graduates left school with no debt, compared to 39% of students from predominantly white colleges and universities. ZERO dollars is the maximum amount that over 60% of the families of HBCU students can contribute to their child’s education! HBCUs deserve a special award from the Academic Industry for surviving over 163 years with minuscule endowments, while serving students from the lowest socioeconomic communities! 8
HBCU FACT DISCOVERIES 2 Lincoln Universities: One in PA and one in MO. Lincoln U in MO founded by black union soldier veterans in 1866. School is now majority white students. Julian Bond’s father was President of Lincoln U in PA. Lincoln U in PA was overseer of $25 billion Barnes Art Collection. Lincoln U in PA is alma mater of Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall and Langston Hughes. Bennett College: New President came from Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Bethune-Cookman University: The only college founded by a black female entrepreneur. Students first college choice was an HBCU. Students are required to wear business suits every Wednesday and Friday. Stillman College: Condoleeza Rice was born on campus of Stillman College. Her father was faculty dean. First black student to integrate University of Alabama was housed at Stillman College, one mile from campus. 9
