I was the student who sat in the corner-most corner of the classroom, saddled with shyness; Gateway and Mr Anthony Chelliah pulled me out of all those corners and made a TV news anchor out of me. I was the sensitive one, incredibly human and sometimes discouraged; Gateway and our beloved Sir RIT Alles put his hand on my shoulder and told me “Putha, keep going. Teachers Teachers help to shape students and impart some of life's most important lessons Annual Review 2018 137

Staff review Teachers are effectively secondary parents to their students and after parents and caregivers, are the most important people in a child’s life. Through each pivotal stage of development, for six to eight hours a day, five days a week, teachers impart important lessons beyond those detailed in a syllabus and help students to grow as people. Through their love and support, teachers leave their legacy in the world by equipping students with the tools to lead happy and productive lives. True to the vision of our Founder, every teacher at Gateway College pledges to be firm, friendly, and fair to students. Gateway College is proud of the qualified, experienced, and dedicated teachers that make up the Gateway family. By applying and adopting the latest teaching practices, our teachers are equipped to support the unique needs and learning style of each child in their care. Over 120 teachers have completed 10 years of service, a high staff retention rate. These senior teachers mentor our new recruits and induct them into the Gateway culture and ethos. Our teachers continue to further their own learning and develop their competencies by taking formal educational courses. Through Gateway’s support for further studies, an increasing number of teachers are completing postgraduate teaching and Master’s qualifications. With modern facilities and technology available to our teachers in the classroom, they are enabled to become more than just lecturers – they are facilitators. 138 Gateway College
