Ms. Hemlata Bhaskar Jadhav ZPPS Salashi No. 1, Block: Devgad The national curriculum framework- 2005 expects that the learning should go beyond the textbooks. It’s our prime responsibility to meet this expectation. The state of Maharashtra has already taken the lead in this regard by producing online resources. Skills can be developed through practice. Practice without innovation may bore the learners. The ELCRLM (English Language Conceptual Resource Learning Material) kit is very useful for the learners because this kit contains teaching-learning material as well as self-learning material. It helps learners to develop their language skills. The ELCRLM is an English education kit which is very useful for the teachers to teach as well as to assess the students. I use all the teaching-learning material in my class step by step. In the beginning, I preferred to develop four language skills of my learners- listening, speaking, reading and writing. Most of the material is provided for developing the reading skill. Students in my class use the self-learning material very easily and effectively, so they have increased interest in the English language. Pupils participate eagerly and happily in all the activities because they have built up their confidence. I have found that the students who never participated in the class handled the English kit material very easily and got motivated to learn English. It helps the learners to learn new vocabulary in innovative ways. By using the vocabulary cards, my students have developed their vocabulary. They can memorise words easily by using new techniques. The kit of English action words (picture and word card) has improved pupils' reading skill. A lot of reading material like word charts, word chain, story cards etc. is 151

given in the kit. Students in my class take interest in reading as the cards are very interesting with stories and pictures on them. Before using the ELCRLM, the recitation of English spellings was so difficult for my students. Now they recite the spellings effectively with ‘Maze’. It is an effective technique of reciting the spellings by using innovative ways shown in the ‘Maze’ cards. My students can spell any word by using techniques given in Maze. ‘Joining of rhyming words-pictures’ is a very interesting game which helps the pupils to pronounce the words accurately. ‘Groove slate’ has developed the motor skills of my students. The aim of the English kit ‘learn with fun’ has been fully achieved with this kit. Now all the students in my class take active part in all the activities. Not only developing LSRW skills, but also assessing the skills of learners with this material is quite easy. The thing I am proud of is that my 5th class students assess the 4th class students in their free time. As a teacher, I am pretty much sure that the ELCRLM is achieving its own goal to enhance the language skills of all kinds of learners. 152

There has been a noticeable change in the place that the English language occupies in our everyday life in India. The visible impact of this presence of English is that it is today being demanded by everyone at the very initial stage of schooling. A number of innovative initiatives are being implemented by the government for the development of English language. Various trainings and guidance are provided to raise the level of the English language of the teachers as well as students. The teaching of English has always been a challenge in India. This is because of the insufficient materials, lack of good teachers of English, lack of exposure to this language, defective method, lack of motivation and lack of confidence. What then is the best way for children to learn English ? Under the Right to Read initiative, the students have the opportunity to learn English with the assistance of the ‘Read to Me’ software. ‘Read To Me’ is a supportive software for the learning of the English language. But What is Read to me ? How is it used for learning English? I would like to give some information and my experience about the Read to me software. ‘Read To Me’ is an online computer based software. It is based on the curriculum of Maharashtra state board for grades 1-10. We can easily install this application where digital set up is available. Read to me software has a facility of reading dictionary, pictorial support , audio recording facility and grammar. While working at DIET, Sindhudurg as a trainer, I gave detailed guidance and information to the teachers about installing this Read to me software in their laptops or 153

PCs. During the training, I noticed that this software is very useful for the students as well as the teachers for improving their English language. This software has been installed in all the schools to make the English reading of the children accurate and correct. The main focus of the software is the development of the loud reading skill. This application helps the students associate words with their proper pronunciation. It is also helpful to the beginners to read aloud the given text. While the text is read aloud, the words pronounced are being highlighted so that students can easily understand them. The students can record their pronunciation while reading loudly. It becomes a joyful process for the learners. For better understanding, we can show the dictionary and the pictures to the students. The students can imitate the proper pronunciation of English words and sentences. This software has the audio reading of all the components of the English textbook as well as the meaning of each word is explained with a picture. This software is also useful for teachers as grammatical support. The teacher can operate the software and play the lesson for the students. In this way, this application is useful for students of 1 to 10 and for the teachers too. This software is free of cost, it works offline too, it's easily operative, helpful for loud reading. It provides grammatical support, dictionary, pictures and the recording of students' own voice. These are some advantages of the software. Using this app regularly will definitely help children to improve their English language. 154

Mr. Prafulla Tukaram Jadhav Shri Mahalaxmi Vidyamandir Kokisare, Block: Vaibhavwadi RAA, (Regional Academic Authority ) is very well known for its speciality in making meaningful ‘Programme Abbreviations’. The ‘CAP’ is also one of the proper abbreviations for the programme designed by the RAA. Generally, we use a ‘cap’ for protection from the sun and the rain. And just like that, the ‘CAP’ protects teachers, learners and their parents from educational confusion and helps to bring them on the proper path. The process of teaching and learning goes on every moment formally and informally. Every individual gets various experiences throughout his life and expresses them through his behavior. In the case of school education, at a certain stage, teachers have to evaluate a child's behavior to determine whether the process is on the proper track or not. In other words, competencies are being assessed. ❖ What is the CAP ? The ‘CAP’ is an abbreviation for the ‘Competencies Assessment Programme’. It is framed by the Regional Academic Authority (RAA), English Expertise, Aurangabad. The programme was implemented in the year 2019-20 for grades II to VIII to assess stage-wise and skill-wise basic competencies of the learners. Initially, it was decided to assess the basic competencies of skills- Speaking and writing in the year 2019-20. The programme is being framed as to develop a need based common programme for the learners across the state. The programme insists the teachers and the learners to achieve competencies by using follow-up programmes. The CAP is such a programme which provides an opportunity of introspection for the teachers and the learners to run on the proper path to reach a predetermined place. ❖ Stages of the CAP The CAP has three stages: 155

Stage No.1- Grades II (Assessment of speaking skill competencies and preparatory) Stage No.2 - Grades III to V (Assessment of mid-level competencies in speaking, basic abilities in reading) Stage No.3 – Grades VI to VIII (Assessment of advance level abilities in speaking, mid-level abilities in reading) ❖ Class Assessment as per CAP guidelines The CAP provides clear-cut directional guidelines to assess the learners as per their grades.The programme also grants the freedom to the assessor to organize parallel activities for assessment. The activities suggested by the CAP are student-friendly. They all are according to their world of experience.The whole class , as an individual or as a group, gets engaged in the activities. ❖ My experience as an Assessor Assessing through the CAP tools is a very enjoyable process. Assessing activities are very simple and interesting. No formal task has been suggested for the assessment. So the whole process is carried out informally and naturally. The learners participate happily and do the suggested actions effortlessly. Thus, as per my opinion, assessing through the CAP tools is a very simple, pleasant and natural process for both the assessor and the learners. ❖ The CAP: Real guide to the assessor and learners The CAP enables teachers and learners to focus on – 1. Where are the learners in their learning at present ? 2. Where are the learners going in their learning ? 3. How will the learners get to the next point in their learning ? Thus, the Competencies Assessment Programme (CAP) shows the real picture of the teaching-learning process. It points out what the assessor and the learner need to do to make progress. Mr. Raghoba Gad ZPPS Madkhol Dhuri Block: Sawantwadi The Government of Maharashtra introduced English from 1st standard in all Marathi medium schools from the year 2000. It was supposed to be a revolutionary decision taken by the Government. Since then, till today so many programmes have been designed and successfully implemented in Marathi Schools to improve the quality of the English education. As a result of that, today the progress of the students in such schools is really amazing. In the same way, the Government of Maharashtra designed a programme to test the abilities of students to see what they have gained during all this journey and that programme was called the ‘CAP’ programme. This programme was designed by the Regional Academic Authority (RAA) Aurangabad. The Competencies Assessment Programme was designed to assess the stage wise and the skillswise basic competencies of learners from std. 2 to 8 and also to develop need based common programmes for the learners across the state. With the help of this CAP tool, teachers can test the basic competencies and linguistic competencies of their students’ language skills. The tests were taken individually and in a friendly environment. Without having any pressure, the students solved the tests as per the instructions of the assessor. Speaking and reading skills were included in this programme. General guidelines were given about conducting the test. Overall when the test was conducted of all the students, the response was really very nice. If we see, the activities included in the test were joyful and as a result of that students enjoyed the CAP test. Also flexibility was provided while conducting the test. E.g. As per the needs of the students, the assessor could give instructions in their mother tongue. Being a primary teacher, I would like to thank the Regional Academic Authority, Aurangabad for designing such a nice programme for my students. 157
