Today, I am very happy to say that the impact of the TEJAS project is seen positively in the teachers and students of my TAG clusters. Teachers from my clusters have developed their confidence of speaking on different topics in English. Their interest in the English language has increased and they actively participate in each activity. Teachers have started using different techniques from the TEJAS project in their daily teaching learning process. The TAG meetings proceeded in the form of reading, writing, watching videos, games, puzzles, activities, communication, role plays, songs, stories and workshops. As a result of this scaffolding, teachers are now motivated to use English in their daily classroom teaching. TAG motivated the teachers to find out various approaches and methods by discussion and sharing ideas. Monthly TAG meetings encouraged the teachers to discuss the problems and find out the solutions. It gave strength, confidence and new hope to the teachers. It also provided flexible methods of teaching in various situations. Frankly speaking, TAG is improving communication skills and giving more confidence to speak English fluently. Exchange of ideas has helped the teachers to support, to implement the new ideas in the classroom. CPD is more effective when it is informed by evidence and supported by experts like the British Council and RAA. TEJAS changed the attitude of teachers towards their CPD, their knowledge and skills, in which professional practice is seen through the different stages of development. Teachers as well as students gained confidence in speaking in English. Students started communicating in English with their teachers. Awareness of participating in different activities is remarkably seen in the students while delivering speeches in English, anchoring of programs in English, speaking in English on English speaking day. Teachers and students are able to manage the appropriate resources in the teaching learning process. Students are able to assess their learning individually, in pairs and groups. Overall the positive impact of TEJAS is seen in me, all the 52 teachers of my three TAGs and many students of these three clubs. 51

Mr. Yogesh Sakpal ZPPS Mhapan No.1, Block: Vengurla ‘Pragat Shaikshanik Maharashtra’, the resolution of 2015, became significant in the educational context of the state. On-demand training for teacher empowerment is an important feature of this resolution. The TAG (Teachers Activity Group) was created in partnership with the Government of Maharashtra, Tata Trust and the British Council under the TEJAS Project (Technology enabled Education through Joint Actions Strategic initiative) for the development of the English language. TAG is created with the main objective of developing the English language. The British Council selected several co-ordinators from all over Maharashtra through telephonic interviews. I am fortunate to get selected for this project. My journey after this selection has been incredibly enriching for me. The State level training for TEJAS was conducted at Aurangabad, Nandrabad under the guidance of expert mentors from RAA, Aurangabad. The project was accurately delivered through these training sessions. The curriculum created for the proper implementation of this project was presented to us very effectively at each stage. We had to execute this project in every cluster. I initially had Nadhavade, Vaibhavwadi and Kumbhavade clusters in Vaibhavwadi block. After working for a year there, I got transferred and was given the responsibility of Lore Helewadi, Khambale and Kurli clusters. The experience of working as a TAG co-ordinator in all these six clusters of Vaibhavwadi was very pleasant. The response from all the teachers was very good. All the teachers liked this new experiment for the development of the English language. The 52

training was well received by the teachers as the idea of grouping and meeting once a month was innovative. The training program helped to dispel traditional fears about English. This training helped in overcoming the barriers of the language. Many trainees enthusiastically participated in this training. Teachers are using the new ideas, teaching methods, skills, activities gained in the training in their daily teaching, the effect of which is now being seen in the schools as well. This is the result of these initiatives. The traditional method of teaching English is kept aside as the innovative and interactive methods of language learning are introduced through this training. With the forming of the WhatsApp group these interactions have become easier which has led to sharing and adapting new ideas. The English language is made easier through the TEJAS initiative. Block Education Officer Hon'ble Mr. Thite, Education Extension Officer Hon'ble Mr. Shingare Saheb, Hon'ble Mr. Nadaf Saheb, Head of the cluster Hon'ble Mr. Gautam Tambe, Hon'ble Mr. Santosh Gosavi, Hon'ble Mr. Ramchandra Jadhav, Hon'ble Mr.Yashwant Valvi, Hon’ble Shivaji Pawar as well as English subject resource person Hon'ble Sarita Jadhav ma'am supported us very well for the smooth implementation of this programme. At the district level, Hon'ble Sushama Konduskar Madam, HOD, English Department, DIET as well as ESA Hon'ble Mr. Vijay Dhamapurkar sir supported and guided us to run this programme. Honourable Mr. Sachin Yadav sir, SARP, Ratnagiri also encouraged us. Thanks TEJAS!!! 53

Ms. Vandana Rane ZPPS Kankavli No.2 Block: Kankavli I can never forget the day, 4 th October ,2018 when I first joined the Sindhudurg Tag-coordinators' team at Aurangabad Pace centre. Prior to that we were selected by RAA, Aurangabad through a telephonic interview. It was a golden opportunity for me to be a TAG C. I realised that it was a challenging task for me. But I accepted it because I have always been in quest to learn new things to enhance my skills personally and professionally. We were trained in Aurangabad for three days. After completing the training, there was improvement in our skills and our knowledge of English. TEJAS is a new project which is run by the state government of Maharashtra with the Tata trust and the British council. This project empowers teachers in practicing English through TAG meetings, which helps teachers to improve students' English knowledge and achieve their own CPD as well. There are many teachers in our schools who are afraid to speak in English. Actually they understand English but are reluctant to speak or hesitate while speaking. So at my first TAG meeting, I had to face some difficulties, because some teachers couldn’t express themselves in English, but after a couple of sessions, we overcame this hurdle . All the TAG teachers were very energetic and enthusiastic then. They were so active and co-operative. They have shared their own ideas, techniques, skills as well as their problems. I always tried to boost the confidence of my TAG teachers. The ambience during the session was very supportive and that was very important. 54

The resource book has a large number of activities. It is very useful to improve our skills as well as learners' skills. I realized that teachers need more assistance to implement their learning by reading, reflection and action plan. I would like to thank all those people who encouraged me and guided me. Mr. Vijay Dhamapurkar (ESA, DIET Sindhudurg), Mr. Sachin Yadav (SARP, DIET Ratnagiri), Ms. Sushama Konduskar, Lecturer (DIET, Sindhudurg) who observed my TAG meetings. BRP Ms. Pranali Palekar, our cluster head and Ms.Shubhangi Dalvi both supported me. Without their support and co-operation I wouldn't be able to do all of this. And at last my students. How can I forget them? They responded to me very well and enthusiastically . With the help of various activities and games they enriched not only their vocabulary but also their confidence level. Now they can play English language games without me. Some of them conduct the games in an excellent way. While giving instructions they use English. Sometimes they converse with each other in English. And all this happened because of TAG. Thank you TEJAS! 55

Mr.Haribhau Gayakwad ZPPS Nileli No.1 Block: Kudal TEJAS is a gate way of progress. It is the new dawn in the teaching learning process of the English language. It is very helpful to build up the confidence of teachers to speak in English and encourage them in the proper way. TEJAS is an innovative project which made the TAG Co-ordinators more confident. Here the teachers stepped into new roles and responsibilities and helped each other to develop and grow professionally. TEJAS changed the teachers' vision towards the education system. Teachers are trying to speak fluently and confidently in TAG meetings at cluster level. TAG Co-ordinators got new approaches and techniques in the training. The sessions were planned meticulously which provided the teachers with new resources and ideas. TAG Coordinators and teachers implemented these ideas and activities in their classes. TAG teachers share their own ideas on whats app groups and discuss with each other which has kept the spirit of the project alive. I have made many flash cards of related topics. First students read the flashcards, then follow the instructions given by the teacher. In this way, I made an action plan for the students to improve their reading skills. So that learners can understand accurate pronunciation and punctuation marks after proper drilling. I arranged different games for the learners to improve their reading skill. I distributed 20 cards to every student. Then students showed flash cards to each other. Student, who reads first and finds the card is the winner of the game. This game was played in pairs or groups. Learners played the 56

game in recess and also at their home. Every learner participated joyfully in each activity. Definitely their confidence level has developed to speak in English. All this has happened because of TAG. I am very happy because I am a small part of this innovative project. I will try to enhance my professional competence as well as my own skills of English teaching and learning in the future as well. I have been handling three clusters since the academic year 2018-19. TAG teachers have given good support to me. Thanks a lot to all the people at district, block and cluster level, who chose me for this innovative project and guided further. 57

Feedback of TAG Meeting Ms. Pramila Tatu chavan ZPPS Pat Varcha Wada, Block: Kudal Hi friends, I am Pramila Chavan, a TAG Co-ordinator from Pat Warchawada cluster. I am here to express my thoughts about the TEJAS Project. We all know that TEJAS is a three year partnership project between the Government of Maharashtra, the Tata Trust and the British Council to improve the quality of students' learning English in primary schools. TEJAS is an innovative programme comprising TAG meetings at cluster level. TAGs are Teacher Activity Groups which are run through semi-formal monthly meetings. I feel very proud that I am also a part of this project. Our training was arranged by RAA, Aurangabad in 2018. I got more information about this project in this training. Teachers all over Maharashtra shared their knowledge here. This knowledge I used in my teaching practices. Through TAG meetings, all English teachers come together once a month at cluster level. Teachers from the local area come together on the online platform as well. Here I noticed the following points. 1) Curiosity about the TEJAS Project and eagerness to learn from it. 2) Increase in their confidence level. 3) Sharing and learning new experiences. In the academic year 2018 and 2019, I was handling three clusters in Kudal Block namely Kudal, Nerur, and Nerurpar. Now in the academic year 2020 and 2021, I am handling the Pat Warchawada cluster. Every teacher has been involved in the meeting with great interest. They are very eager to learn all the activities. All of them have gained new experiences through these meetings. The warmer activity plays an important role here. Everybody is in a fresh mood after the warmer activity and is ready to learn. 58

In the TAG meetings we meet every month so it’s like a refresher activity. Every teacher learns at his own pace and the resource book provides further guidance. TEJAS has given us directions to form a learning community. Teachers are now used to Whatsapp, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and online learning sources for their own CPD (Continuous Professional Development). Through this community, teachers discuss their classroom challenges, share solutions, ideas and implement them in their classrooms. TEJAS is a bright ray of hope to government schools to improve the quality of teaching. Teachers are now trying innovative activities and techniques in their lesson planning. I would like to share one of my class experiences. I took one language development lesson about short messages. I taught them how to type such messages. I taught them the technique of typing. It saves energy, time and space etc. And now my learners of std. VI are able to type short messages on computer, mobile or cards. And this is really helping them in today’s online education. My learners feel very happy because they can type their messages confidently. As a result of this, English learning has become more effective. Most of the teachers and also learners talk confidently, fluently without hesitation. Success of this training is based only on active participation of all TAG teachers at cluster level. TEJAS has given us a new vision and even changed our views towards life. Through this project I got an opportunity to improve my teaching skills. I learnt how to plan different activities according to the learner's interest. It improved my English language skills. TEJAS gave me the correct direction about the lesson or unit planning which helped me a lot to be more interactive with my learners. TEJAS has made my future bright in every way. Ms. Sharayu Prakash Kadam TAG Co. Tithavali, Block: Vaibhavwadi Hello, I am Sharayu Prakash Kadam. I am a TAG coordinator for cluster Tithavali, Vengsar, Sonali in vaibhavwadi Block. I experienced complete bliss when I came to know that I was selected as a TAG Co-ordinator by the British Council. During the TAG training in Kolhapur, I experienced a plethora of ideas about learning. I was grappled by the doubt whether I will be able to handle the responsibility for three clusters. At the first TAG meeting held at Tithavali, our BEO, Cluster Head, Head Master and TAG Teachers were present which was quite motivating and helpful. The Feedback for the first TAG meeting was quite impressive. BEO (Mr.Thite Saheb), Cluster Head, Block Resource Person and TAG teacher gave excellent feedback. I received a message from Ms. Shirin Sayyad ma'am, a TAG Teacher, insisted that I must conduct the TAG meeting twice a month. The response for conducting TAG meetings twice a month grew because participants were enjoying the activities. This response became the fuel for my excellency in future TAG meetings. I had to travel for mentoring TAG meetings at Vengsar and Sonali. But, it never took me down. This was possible because of the support of TAG participants at Vengsar and Sonali. Every participant was enthusiastically participating in the activities. I noticed remarkable progress among my students also. In 2018, I conducted a spelling game . Students enjoyed it so much that they insisted me to conduct it on a daily 60

basis. During the next classes, I taught activities like throwing a ball, chain drill, memory game, aeroplane activity and so on. The interesting thing that I found among students is that they enjoy learning English through activities. As an activity my students conducted interviews of colleagues, teachers, headmaster and our BEO. Students are confidently and passionately trying to speak English. The COVID-19 pandemic situations have affected the learning process but because of TEJAS we have tackled this also. Our Extension Officer, Nadaf sir, gave me permission in one of the conferences to put forward objectives of the TEJAS project in order to check whether we were able to sink these objectives in the young minds, to check whether students are actually participating in the activities. Soon after the permission to conduct the TEJAS objective session at school, the COVID-19 pandemic raised its head up. Here our district’s educational authority helped us to move TEJAS to an online platform. During these two years of TEJAS project, Respected Dhamapurkar Sir, ESA, DIET, Sindhudurg, Ms. Sarita Jadhav madam, BRP, Respected Kelkar sir, Cluster Head, Jadhav sir, Suryvanshi sir and all my TAG Teachers indeed helped me and supported me. Thank you! View on TEJAS by student Sania Sartaz Nandakar, ZPPS Kolape Jamat Urdu, Vaibhavwadi. ❖ Video reference https://youtu.be/aW7y0qlrmis 61

Mr. Dattaram Sawant, ZPPS Madkhol Dhuri Block: Sawantwadi Pragat Shaikshanik Maharashtra brought radical changes in the field of education. One of the major aspects of this programme was Shikshan Utsav: a fair of educational activities. I participated in this educational fair in Ratnagiri. I saw excellent speaking children, from primary schools and I felt that my Maharashtra has really progressed. I had arranged a stall in this Shikshan utsav. There in mahotsav I met some smart students from Z. P. schools who communicated fluently in English. I was amazed at their skill. It is TEJAS, which is implemented effectively in the entire state. British Council, Tata Trust and Maharashtra Government jointly initiated the project TEJAS. I was appointed as a TAG co-ordinator in Sawantwadi Block. Three clusters were given to me i.e. Sangeli, Madkhol and Tambuli. I had a doubt whether I can speak fluent English. But over time, the fear of English subsided and I started conducting meetings successfully in English. Teachers from all the clusters were very enthusiastic for the TAG meets. TAG meets are the free platforms for teachers to communicate in English. The supervisory system, especially cluster heads, also participated in the programme. The activities that were carried out in the TAG meetings were applied in the actual classes too! At such times, the happiness experienced by the teachers was different. The teachers realized that their students can speak English. The children of Sangeli School from Sawantwadi Block started conversing in English excellently. Some teachers agreed to work as TAG co-ordinators. The fear of English subject is reduced in all the schools in the block. The success of the initiative depends on the teachers who implement it. Even during lockdown my teachers were attending the TAG meetings through the ZOOM app. This is the true success of the TEJAS programme. 62

Mr. Digvijay Nagoji Phadke ZPPS Sateli Bhedshi, Usap Block : Dodamarg ‘Learning another language is not only learning different words for the same things, but learning different words for the same things. English is widely spoken throughout the world and is needed in almost every field. But, sometimes our teachers lack confidence while communicating in English. Considering the widespread utility of English in every sphere including Education, the government of Maharashtra has undertaken various initiatives to enhance the English language skills of the teachers and simultaneously of the students. These programmes have contributed to develop the basic language skills of the teachers which have made the teaching learning process more effective. One such noteworthy project is TEJAS which is the joint venture of the state government, the Tata Trust and the British Council. ❖ Four basic skills in English: There are four basic skills of the English language namely Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. The TAGs (Teacher Activity Group) have enhanced these four basic skills of TAG teachers. These teachers too have made their teaching learning process interesting and joyful by implementing all the activities. All over Maharashtra, our ‘District Education Department’ under the guidance of the Regional Academy Authority (RAA), Aurangabad has successfully organized the TAG-meetings in each and every cluster through TAG-Coordinators, who are well trained by the RAA and the British Council. 63

❖ Enrichment of listening skills through learning by watching: In our TAG resource book there are various types of activities which are useful to develop the basic skills of the English teachers. Compared to the previous projects of English, TEJAS stands high as it offers the continuation of the teachers’ CPD. Because of the monthly TAGs, the teachers meet more often and share their learning and best practices with each other. In the TAG resource book, the section ‘learning by watching’ is full of a lot of informative and engaging videos designed by the British Council. It has become possible for the TAG teachers to improve their listening skills with the help of these videos as they can improve their pronunciation and expand their vocabulary. After watching these videos they communicate and discuss with each other in English about the videos and automatically use English in their discussion. Their confidence gets boosted when they use the learnt words and sentences into their discussions. They have started imparting this knowledge and skill to their students as well. TAG teachers have learnt to listen to each other and accept and respect the opinions of other teachers. TAG teachers have developed their listening skills through this ear-training program and the various games based on listening. They give ample listening opportunities to their students to listen to English. They conduct exercises in the class to help them differentiate between short and long vowel sounds. ❖ Enrichment of speaking skill Through language development section The language development worksheets provided in the TAG resource books offer a wide range of activities to help the teachers to practice their speaking skill. These engaging activities focusing on basic vocabulary and grammar have made the speaking tasks interesting and close to real life use. Due to these language development section activities: 1. The teachers have developed their basic vocabulary essential for speaking English. 2. Their knowledge of English speaking skills has increased. 3. They have become more fluent while communicating in English. 4. They implement their learning in their daily teaching learning process. 5. They confidently express their feelings in English in the TAG meetings using appropriate words. 64

6. They share the ideas, techniques and experiences of their teaching practices in English in the TAG meetings. 7. Their questioning skill has also been developed. 8. The level of their basic English grammar has also improved. 9. They are able to solve their linguistic problems through this section. 10. They have learnt the various types of error correction techniques through the language development section. ❖ Enrichment of Reading Skill through Learning by Reading Section: Reading is a very important skill for English language development. In the TAG resource book there are various types of reading based on different subjects. Due to these learning by reading section activities: 1. The TAG teachers have recognised loud reading as a tool for speech development. 2. They know the importance of reading skill for good English. 3. They have cultivated good reading habits among the students. 4. They can design various reading activities in their teaching learning process which make the learning process joyful. 5. They have developed an interest in reading in English. 6. They have good knowledge and awareness of pauses, intonations and spellings. 7. They have acquired new English words and clauses that form longer sentences. Enrichment of Writing skill through Reflection and Action Planning section In the TAG-resource book the last section is of ‘reflection and action planning’. It is the most important section as it provides us with opportunities to share our learning points in our own words. It’s a kind of application through which we practice our writing skill. Due to this ‘Reflection and Action planning’ section activity... ➔ TAG teachers can express on their own while writing their reflections and the action plan. ➔ They have acquired the skill of effective writing through the writing section. ➔ They can reflect on their ideas which they have shared in the activities during the TAG-meeting. ➔ They can prepare a plan of action for their classroom. 65

➔ They have participated in action research competitions by using techniques from this section. ➔ They have arranged writing competitions in their schools. ➔ They encourage and guide their students to write in English. ➔ In the TAG meetings, they expressed their opinions in English in a fluent and confident way. ➔ They have developed their own techniques through this reflection and action plan section. Other benefits of TAG-meetings ➔ The teachers have increased awareness about their continuous professional development (CPD) through the TAG meetings. ➔ They understand the various educational policies and practices in English. ➔ They have learnt to understand students and their different learning styles and how to encourage them to develop their basic skills of English. ➔ They have developed their critical thinking and problem solving skills through the TAG –meetings. ➔ They are adapting and applying the new techniques according to the level of learners in their classroom. ➔ They have performed various language functions in English such as requesting, greeting, clarifying, apologizing in TAG-meetings. ➔ They have learnt and used various activities such as interview, drilling, narration, skits, role play, tongue twister, debate in English in their classrooms. ➔ They encourage and guide students to develop their skill of questioning. ➔ They have created and shared their own educational videos especially in English. 66

Mr. Giriraj Maroti Tammewar Z.P.P.S Padel no.1 Block: Devgad I am very happy to share my experiences regarding the impact of TAG meetings and the role of a TAG coordinator. In the beginning I was very excited about the TAG co-ordinators' selection process so I decided to apply. I was selected for the TEJAS project as a TAG coordinator. After completing the training I took my first TAG meeting of two clusters, Manche and Pombhurle. It was a great experience for me. Initially the teachers were afraid to participate in the activities in the TAG meeting. But the magic worked in the second TAG meeting and one teacher after the another started participating spontaneously in the activities. Gradually in the meeting all the teachers started talking in English. They liked the activities in the TAG meetings to such an extent that they started implementing those activities in their classes. Teachers started taking warmer activities in their classes. While teaching they began to converse with their students in English and students also started to respond in English. After a few months, the students also started taking the daily assembly in English. This is the impact of TAG meetings. Mr. Amit Vitthal Patil ZPPS Maneri No.4 Block: Dodamarg There are so many projects and trainings organized for the English language. Four years ago the British Council conducted teachers’ training for the English language. That training was a very good experience for all teachers. All activities and ideas were very innovative. But as the days passed, it was observed that without feedback, teachers soon forgot all the activities and ideas. So our ‘Education Department’ in collaboration with the ‘British Council’ came up with a new initiative where they organised monthly forums for teachers at the cluster level. These meetings enriched the teachers with the activities to be used in the classrooms regularly, to communicate with each other in English and to share their experiences with other teachers. In the beginning, I had a little knowledge about this project. I still remember the first day of my training in RAA, Aurangabad. There were so many other teachers from every district in Maharashtra. Our master trainers made us familiar with the TEJAS project. The idea of speaking in English for three consecutive hours made me scared initially. But When I organised TAG meetings in my cluster, I confidently spoke in English for three hours. This miracle was possible because the TEJAS project instilled a sense of confidence in me. ❖ TAG- COORDINATOR: When I was selected as a TAG Coordinator, I had many queries and doubts about my role. But these doubts were cleared by the trainers of the British Council and RAA. 69

After completing the five days’ training at Aurangabad, I got confidence to face the training at cluster level. I organised cluster level meetings in Sasoli, Moregaon and Kolzer with the help of our cluster head Ms. Dalavi mam and Mr. Kubal sir. In the first TAG meeting, my TAG members were afraid to speak in English because they were not used to speak in English for such a long time. I had to motivate them again and again to speak a little bit in English to start with. Now in my cluster, TAG members can speak and communicate with each other in English confidently. This is the magic of TEJAS. All my TAG members are very satisfied with this project, because this project has equipped them with various activities and ideas which they can use in their classrooms. All the TAG members enjoyed every game, communication activities and all other types of activities during the monthly meetings. When we were discussing the previous TAG meetings, our TAG members also shared their own experiences and changes needed in the activities. This project built up the confidence of the teachers and this is useful to accelerate the learning process. When I compared my first TAG meeting to last month's TAG meeting, I noticed so many changes in my TAG members. Now they are full of confidence, they try to speak as much as they can in English. I think the TEJAS project is a milestone to develop English speaking at primary level. As a teacher I am also thankful to the TEJAS project, because it has enabled me to speak continuously in English. When I was making preparations for the TAG meeting, I got more information about every concept. Thus I conducted all the activities and funny games in my school, for my students first and later I used them in my TAG meetings. As a result, my students are now enjoying English as a game and they participate in all the activities. If faced with any difficulties in any activity, I solved it with the help of my TAG members. So I earnestly think that the TEJAS project is very useful for teachers, students and today's learning process. 70

Ms. Bhagyshri Govind Wadkar ZPPS Nandos Gaonkarwada, Block: Malvan ‘If you don’t step forward, you are always at the same place……’ We got the chance to step forward through TEJAS. The TEJAS project aims at improving teachers’ professional understanding and practice for the students' successful learning. I joined TEJAS as a TAG member first. It was a new concept for me and all other participants also. Every teacher was nervous about it, but after the meeting, we enjoyed all the activities. I started to converse with other members in English and other teachers also started to do the same. Thus, I gained self - confidence to speak in English with others. Now, my students also take active participation in all the activities which are conducted in the school. I try to speak in English with my students in the class. Students also enjoy speaking and try to imitate me. This is amazing because this is the first step towards English enrichment. After some months, the MOOC program was launched. It enriched me with more knowledge of classroom activities and new words. Then I got a golden chance to become a TAG coordinator. I gained a lot of confidence from the TAG meetings. I always carefully planned the activities, concepts, ideas, techniques to conduct the TAG meetings. When I joined as a TAG C at my cluster, every TAG member already had an idea about a TAG meeting. They were taking part in all the activities and sections. Each TAG member was participating in every section. 72

1. Warmer Activity: I used games, activities, action songs for all TAG members as well as students which made the session lively and interesting. I found out various types of activities from online sources. So, it was an energetic beginning to our TAG meetings. 2. Review: TAG members discussed action planning points from the last TAG meeting. They also discussed challenges and difficulties which they faced in any activity in their classes. They discussed solutions for it also. This helped in understanding others’ point of view. At the end we got many ways to solve the challenges or difficulties. 3. Language Development: This program focuses on basic vocabulary and grammar followed by activities to improve speaking skills with confidence and fluency. TAG members took part in small conversations, discussions and activities which ultimately improved their speaking skill. So, all TAG members developed their confidence in speaking. They learnt many new words and phrases. They thought of ways to adapt those activities for their students. They really enjoyed the activities as well as the discussions. 4. Learning by Reading In this section, there are topics for reading which are related to English teaching methods. We came to know about managing classes, arranging activities and various techniques, words and phrases. The TAG members discussed and helped each other to understand the main points or any difficulties. They answered, clarified the meanings of sentences, words or phrases. They point out and share ideas, opinions and reflections. They also discussed how it was related to them and their teaching method. 5. Learning by Watching: There were short classroom videos, showing learner centered activities. Every TAG member had a link of these videos. They thought about these activities in the videos. They got ideas on how to adapt those activities with the textbook activities. It was indeed useful to develop classroom English. TAG members got knowledge of using classroom 73

English. TAG members got ideas about using questions, flashcards, drills, pair work and how to develop learners' speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. 6. Reflection and Action planning: In this section, everyone reflected on the ideas which they had shared and activities they had taken part in during the TAG meetings. They noted down what they could try in their lessons. They completed the reflection questions which were the mirrors of their classes. They also make action plans. All these steps helped us to enrich our self-confidence to communicate with each other as well as in the classroom. We shared new ideas, teaching techniques, activities and experiences. We supported each other to face challenges and difficulties. We took the responsibility of our own professional development. This process of the TEJAS project has not only been pleasant but also playful and enjoyable. Thank you TEJAS. ‘Coming together is Beginning, Keeping together is Progress, Working together is Success.’ 74

Ms. Pratima Pokale ZPP Block: Kankavli ‘Stagnant water gets contaminated but running water doesn't.’ Similarly a man that stops learning can't justify the precious gift of life that the almighty has given us. I firmly believe in this and thus strive hard to live as a student for all my life. I always keep looking around and watch out to find new opportunities of growth. I found one such new opportunity in the form of TEJAS TAG meetings. When I got to know that I was selected as a TAG coordinator of our cluster, I was super elated. The fellow colleagues that I was supposed to teach were excited too! I organized my first meeting in the month of January 2020. TAG meetings have proved to be very important for the overall development of the TAG members. With the help of these TAG meetings I built up the confidence of my TAG members. All my TAG members participated in all the activities and games with great enthusiasm. TEJAS is very important for professional development. With the help of TAG meetings, we expanded our knowledge and communication skills for the development of our organization and pupils. As a co - ordinator I enjoyed the organisation of the TAG meetings. Through these meetings we learnt four different sections which are language development, learning by reading, learning by watching and then we used to have reflection and action planning. When we met in these meetings we discussed new joyful techniques to make our English teaching more enjoyable and interactive. I am fortunate to be a part of TEJAS project as it has provided a great learning experience for the TAG members, students and me as well. Before conducting TAG meetings I was not sure whether I would be able 75

to roll out this project successfully. This was my first experience with a project like this. But when I took two offline meetings and two online meetings, it added to my confidence and everything went well. Our cluster head Ms. Anagha Chiplunkar used to be with us in every TAG meeting. She too participated in various activities. She encouraged everyone to conduct such games and activities in schools and to reflect on their teaching and make an action plan report. I always provided opportunities to all the TAG members and made sure that everyone participates. I used technology and social media to facilitate professional development effectively and made sure everyone participates actively to get equipped with the required skills. I recorded students' role plays, skits and much more and uploaded them on YouTube also. 76

Ms.Rutuja Dinesh Jangale ZPPS Wargaon no.1, Block: Kankavli. ‘An Education system is as good as its teachers’. This great statement by UNESCO implies the importance of a teacher's role and responsibilities in the field of Education. As a teacher, I really feel proud to be a stakeholder of a grand program like TEJAS. Because of this innovative program I could get a platform to learn English and to be in touch with ambitious teachers. Under the guidance of a TAG co-ordinator Mr. Govind Wavdane sir and with the support of cluster head Mr. Sanjay Pawar sir, I have been trying out various activities and language games in the classroom since last two years. These activities and games not only benefit students but also teachers a lot. TAG meetings are just like a workshop where teachers are facilitated and trained to implement new learning in their schools. It is also a platform that belongs to teachers and is run by teachers only. Teachers are given freedom to get their doubts solved by the co-ordinators, colleagues and even they are motivated to share their new ideas and techniques with other teachers. So it becomes informal and teachers participate willingly. TAG meetings are also like rehearsals for teachers to enable the learners to speak and communicate in English. Due to this well-planned and action plan based programme, I could develop the interest and confidence of students in learning English. In a TAG meeting, speaking fluency, vocabulary, grammar, group discussion, reflection, short classroom films and worksheets are focused more to improve the quality of English of students and to update the teachers regarding their CPD. As per my experience, I can definitely say that teachers get engaged in these meetings more 77

actively than in any other trainings or workshops. And the credit goes to the framework of this programme. Students prefer to learn in a natural way. This psychology of pupils is centralized here. All the topics are full of activities and language games. So students eagerly wait for the period of English to play a new language game. Thus learning English goes on smoothly and effectively. Our TAG coordinator Mr. Govind Wavdane Sir devotedly facilitates the meeting and motivates the teachers to be active. He too offers opportunities to lead the meeting or the session. At present, our TAG meetings are being conducted online to prevent the spread of corona pandemic. All the teachers and supervising authorities join the meetings and use collaborative tools like padlet, mentimeter etc. successfully. TEJAS made classroom teaching and learning easier. When I started to show them videos from Learning by Watching, it built up their confidence. I insisted them to shoot their videos. The target language and techniques which are introduced in the meetings are working well. This has helped me to make the learning process joyful and meaningful for the students. Now students are using vocabulary and sentences such as like, don’t like, what is the weather like, can I help you etc. so naturally and playing games like onion ring, ladder race, stop the bus, fire on the mountain etc. skillfully. Actually, we teachers had been teaching English for years after years using just traditional methods. But with the introduction of English in primary education in 2000, we started using eclectic method. But TEJAS has moved ahead of all and prompted learners to learn on their own with curiosity and enjoyment. Students are now performing dialogues, activities, stories, games in English fearlessly and confidently. This programme has stimulated us to stretch our wings to touch the sky. ❖ Video Reference Links of classroom teaching and learning. 1. Video No. 1 2. Video No. 2 3. Video No. 3 78

Ms. Kunda Kubal ZPPS Satose No.1, Block: Sawantwadi From the year 2000 the Government of Maharashtra decided to include the English subject from the first standard in the curriculum. Initially it was difficult for teachers and students; so many trainings were arranged. Among those programmes, SMART P. T. training was noteworthy. From the last ten years the Government of Maharashtra has arranged various training programmes such as SMART P.T., Spoken English, ELIPS, LEP and TEJAS. I liked Spoken English and ELIPS very much. It was the first time for teachers to have a proper platform to improve their English teaching skills and to be more familiar with English. All master trainers did their job well to motivate teachers and to participate in each and every activity. At first we were not able to speak in English because of lack of confidence, but master trainers propelled us by conducting various motivational activities. When we went through these trainings, we became very confident to conduct our classes. We got so many ideas to make children familiar with the English language. These trainings made teachers' jobs easier. In the beginning, we used to translate each and every word. We were thinking in Marathi and translating in English. But after attending these trainings, we became able to think as well as speak in English. Now TAG meetings are a good platform for English conversations. These meetings enrich our confidence. I am thankful to all our master trainers for motivating us and building our confidence. 79

TAG : An Inspiration Mr. Pravin R. Kharat, ZPPS Awalegaon, Patkartemb, Block: Kudal TAG is one of the greatest opportunities provided to the teachers. They came to know about various English teaching activities. When I first enrolled myself for TAG, I had little knowledge about this programme. I participated in the TAG as a TAG teacher at Pokharan cluster last year. Now in the academic year 2019 - 20, I became a TAG co-ordinator at Awalegaon cluster. I was ready to be a part of this excellent project and learn as much as I can. I have noticed that most of the teachers participate actively and enjoy themselves. This is a positive sign. Initially participants hesitated to express themselves. After a couple of sessions, they were more comfortable. They shared ideas and participated in all the activities. I always try to boost the confidence of every teacher. I try encouraging them to first discuss among themselves in pairs and then share it with all the TAG teachers. The atmosphere during the session is supportive. I always ensure that my session do not turn into a lecture. I always try to keep it innovative and interacting. I use English during the sessions and deliberately use Marathi only when it is necessary. The purpose continues to make them confident in speaking English. I believe that learning is a process. I actively work along with the participants. We have a group on WhatsApp where we share new ideas, innovative techniques, videos of various activities etc. I always try to provide opportunities to all the participants, so that they can reflect on the sessions and equip themselves with the skills. They are able to adapt activities on 80

their own. I always ensure that the objective of the session is clear. I choose the right topic which is contextual and beneficial for everyone. I extensively use the Year 1 Resource book and the innovative activities mentioned in it. This resource allows me to conduct the sessions very easily and effectively. I use various types of warmer activities during the TAG sessions. I have realised that teachers need the assistance the most while using English in the reflection and the action planning sessions. The more sessions I facilitated, the more confidence I gained in my English speaking ability. I have learnt new ideas and techniques. The TAGs have also allowed me to take ownership of my own learning and development. In the end, I would like to thank our cluster head Hon. Mr. Talekar sir, my colleagues and BRPs who have helped me immensely in this journey. Without their support and cooperation, I wouldn't have been able to do all of this. I wish you all good luck for your future TAG meetings. 81

Ms. Mayuri Hemant Rane, ZPPS Rembvali, Block: Devgad Hello, I am Mayuri Hemant Rane; working as an assistant teacher at Zilla Parishad Primary School Rembvali, Cluster- Salashi, Block - Devgad, District- Sindhudurg. I am a TAG teacher. I would like to share my experiences about my teaching learning process after the TAG meetings. I feel so lucky to get an opportunity to join Teacher Activity Group [TAG]. When I joined this group, I was working as an Assistant Teacher in Zilla Parishad Primary School Karul. Block – Kankavli. That time I was a Class Teacher of class 2nd and 4th. The school was a semi-English school and so that from the 1st standard, we had focused on improving English and Marathi language of students. The school belongs to a rural area. Most of the students have farming background. So all the students were dependent upon their teachers and school for education. That’s why I have benefited a lot from this TAG training. Our TAG meeting went through four sections: language development, learning by reading, learning by watching, reflection and action planning. Our TAG coordinator Mr. Nitin Patil sir was involving every TAG member in the whole meeting by taking different activities, games or songs. He made the meeting joyful and learning a fun activity. So we are eagerly waiting for the next TAG meeting. This TAG group is very active and the cluster head of Damare Tivare Ms. Juhili Sawant is also very active. She attended all the TAG meetings from start to end so all the TAG members from our group were active in all the meetings. All the TAG members shared their good and bad experiences. We all disused on that. From all these 82

discussions, we got new ideas for developing students’ abilities of speaking, reading, and enhancing vocabulary. Our cluster head arranged TAG meetings in different schools every time, so we could see a new activity in that school. Because of these TAG activities, I was able to develop the language of my students. So it increased the confidence of my students. As a result of this, students also made conversations and could express themselves very well. After three TAG meetings, I got transferred. I joined Zilla Parishad primary school Rembavli and a new TAG group of cluster Salashi. This TAG group is also a very active group. Our TAG coordinator Mr. Shankar Bhujabal sir is a very active person. He made the group eager for meetings every time. He gave a chance to each TAG member to conduct a session. I took a session on the first section ‘Language development’. Due to this, my confidence level touched new heights. During this first year of TAG meetings, I got another opportunity of English Kit training. Side by side it has developed my students' English in the same academic year of 2019-2020. After that training my Z.P. School Rembawali got an English Kit. The material of the kit is useful for developing reading skill, vocabulary, making and writing sentences and to develop their grammar. The TAG meetings are not only useful for me but also for other teachers like me. This programme instilled more confidence in me. Because of the TAG Meetings I got new ideas, techniques and inspirations to teach my students effectively from our TAG coordinators, TAG resource books and my colleagues. (TAG members of my both TAG Groups.) Only through the TAG meetings did I get the confidence; that my students can speak fluent English with confidence. Because of TAG, I tried many techniques for my students. In it, I found a friend like TAG which helped me a lot. So thank you very much TAG and TEJAS project. I am also thankful to DIET Sindhudurg, BRC Devgad, Cluster Head Ms. Juhili Sawant Madam and Ms.Varsha Lad Madam, TAG Coordinator Mr. Nitin Patil Sir and Mr. Shankar Bhujabal Sir. Thanks to all the people who guided me directly and indirectly and supported me. ❖ Video Reference Click here - Video 1 Video 2 Video 3 83

Ms. Sanika Mahesh Shingade. ZPPS Anav Parabwada, Block: Kudal We all have learnt English as a third language. I used to love English very much, but I was scared while speaking in English. And so I avoided speaking and using the English language in my day to day life. But in the year 2019 TEJAS, (Technology Enabled Education through Joint Action and Strategic initiative) program started in our Sindhudurg district, in collaboration with the Government of Maharashtra, the British Council and the Tata Trust. TEJAS is a three years programme that promotes professional development of teachers and development of students. These TAG meetings gave us a strong platform to express ourselves in English. It was a big opportunity to speak with each other in English and express our ideas in English. In the TAG meetings I learnt a variety of activities. ‘Activeness of each teacher is the soul of the TAG Meeting’. So each and every teacher became active and whole-heartedly participated in the TAG Meetings. Therefore we gained more confidence to speak in English. The Most effective activity of the TAG Meetings is ‘role play’ activity. When I presented this activity in the TAG Meeting, all the TAG Teachers enthusiastically participated in the activity. All enjoyed these imaginary characters. We also conducted role play activities regarding our lessons like shopkeeper-customer, students-teachers, mother and son. From the discussions in the TAG meetings, we began to understand each other’s new ideas, new methods, and new activities. 85

We all started implementing all these ideas in our class. The children in the class were also very enthusiastic about these activities. I took various activities like – Point to the object, Role play activity, Self-introduction, and various types of games related to English subject. Therefore, along with the professional development of the teachers, the quality of students' learning began to develop. During the first TAG year, I conducted a lot of English activities in my school. MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) program also helped us a lot in our progress. I created several videos of English activities. In the second standard, there is an activity – “My Vegetables”. In this activity learners become a particular vegetable and introduce themselves as that vegetable. Like I am a cucumber, green and slim, I am a pumpkin, fat and yellow.” In that way all the students introduce all vegetables easily. We also sent those types of videos to our parents' whatsapp group. Parents also appreciated the acting of the children and activities carried out by me. ELCRLM (English Language Conceptual Resource Learning Material) kit is the most important teaching aid provided by the Government of Maharashtra. With the help of this kit children began to study in their own way. Now from the year 2021, all our TAG meetings are moved to an online platform. Last year we completed our first year resource book. Now BRC Kudal has chosen me as a TAG facilitator for the Humarmala cluster. Thanks to this type of training like TEJAS, MOOC and Spoken English. We gain confidence in speaking and using the English language in our day to day life. Because of this course we have become fearless about the English language. I hope that the Government of Maharashtra will continue to provide such courses to teachers. Thank you very much. ❖ Video Reference - 1) Activity: Chain drill (school Anav Parabwada) 2) Activity: My vegetables AnavParabwada Block- Block- kudal 3) e-Book Videos 86

Ms. Shalik Patil ZPPS Parule No.3 Block: Vengurla I am happy to share my experience of the English Language Conceptual Resources Learning Material (ELCRLM) kit training. I was selected for the three days ELCRLM training at DIET Sindhudurg by seniors. There were well skilled trainers who motivated us positively. They provide us with great opportunities to build our skills, knowledge and experience of the English language. In those three days training, Ms. Sushama Konduskar, HoD of English, Mr. Vijay Dhamapurkar, English subject assistant and their colleagues gave valuable guidance. During the training, I participated in all the activities. It helped me to develop my professional abilities. I participated in that training very spontaneously. I participated in the innovative initiatives taken in each session. Facilitators gave us information about each set of materials in the ELCRLM kit as well as the method of using it. Therefore, our knowledge was enhanced during the training and this experience increased our confidence. It helped me to enhance my own English. Training provides timely guidance about upcoming problems and obstacles. Completing the three-day training had boosted my confidence. Still, I was a little stressed. Because for the first time in my life, I was supposed to give this kind of training to other teachers. All the teachers were new to me because I had just started the job as a newly recruited teacher.. Three days ELCRLM training at DIET Sindhudurg was successfully completed by me and my colleague Mr. Rathod sir from my bit, who gathered the necessary preparation materials for cascading the training at bit level. While conducting this training, many teachers hesitated to participate in different activities. However, after some sessions, 87

they became more comfortable and freely participated in all the activities and started enjoying the activities. From my side, I encouraged all the teachers to increase their participation. Teachers tried to express themselves in English and that was a positive sign of training. I tried to ensure that my sessions did not take the form of a lecture and tried to increase interactions and minimize my talking time to give more chances to express them as participants. During the training, the participant teachers used maximum English language. Sometimes they used Marathi language when it was necessary. The main purpose of all the activities conducted during the training was to build the confidence of every participating teacher to enable him/her to help the students in the class and give ideas about every material present in the box. Teachers didn’t have any idea of how to handle the material. But when proper guidance was given they got ideas and teachers also suggested new ideas to use the material. Also they told us about using the same material in different ways. So other teachers got new ideas and communication skills developed automatically. I gave the opportunity to each participating teacher to express themselves during the training. All the teachers tried to learn new ideas and concepts to handle the material of the ELCRLM kit. Also they shared their experiences, problems, and solutions with each other. According to the use of each material present in the box and the schedule of reading provided in the manual, teachers conducted activities in their classes and school. After the successful training of the ELCRLM kit, I and my fellow teachers planned to use ELCRM kit material in our school. Accordingly, B, C, P, T, .... D, F, M, N ... related materials were given daily by each student so that their reading and speaking skills would be developed. I gave various materials from the box to the students and students used them to make pairs, words, sentences and so on. After coming to school, students use the material on their own. They practice recognizing words, making sentences etc. It has helped to dispel fear and negativity about English.I use the English kit material for each student, along with my colleagues. For this, the head of the center Mr. Dhananjay Chavan, the headmaster of my school Mr. Sameer Chavan, associate teachers Mr. Dattatray Mhaiskar, Ms. Vaidehi Gosavi give proper guidance and help. I am thankful to all the seniors and colleagues for choosing me as a master trainer for conducting this training and giving me the right guidance. 88

Ms. Shireen Nisar Sayyed ZPPS Urdu Kolpe Jamat, Block: Vaibhavwadi English is a foreign language. In India mostly every parent wants his child to speak English fluently. They expect this from every school. This tendency has created competition among different schools. I am a teacher and serve in a government aided school. When I came across the fact why parents are running after the English medium schools, I decided to improve my students’ English reading, writing and speaking skills. First I planned what I should give to my students to achieve my goal. The first priority was students’ vocabulary. This was done by running a daily basis activity that is Today’s word. I used to give a new word and it’s meaning on a daily basis. This activity was for the whole year. Secondly I started different activities to achieve the particular goal. In a few days I got the results. It brought a lot of confidence in me. Months after months and years after years passed. The achievement of my goal was fulfilled but still there was something that was missing. In the year 2018, I was a part of 5 days ‘Spoken English’ Training by ‘The Regional Academic Authority[RAA] Aurangabad’ held at Block level. The training had many activities related to spoken English. In that training, we were asked to join the Facebook group for Spoken English by RAA. After joining the group I learned that the members of the RAA group are also conducting different activities to enhance their learners’ speaking skills. There were very simple and interesting activities to motivate their learners towards speaking English. I got many ideas from that group to achieve my goals more effectively. Few months later I got another opportunity, which came in the form of the TEJAS Project. TEJAS is a three year partnership project between the Government of Maharashtra, the TATA Trusts and the British Council. This project is for improving the quality of students’ 89

learning of English in schools. An important part of TEJAS is the Teacher Activity Group [TAG]. TAGs are semi-formal monthly teacher meetings at cluster level. In monthly meetings we, the members of TAGs, get the chance to present our own class activities. We discuss the activity and its outcome. TEJAS has provided us with the Resource book. There are many activities included in that book. In every TAG meeting we discuss some of the activities from that Resource book and plan how to conduct those in the class. I conduct those activities in my class and drill it once a week. It is giving a good result in my class. The activity based learning includes every student in the class whether he is an active learner or a slow learner. Every student feels that he can also read, write and speak English. This is possible just because of the activity based learning. It is true that not every student is fluent in English. There are many students who make mistakes but it doesn’t bother my teaching. I give my students that liberty. Making mistakes while performing an activity is not a big issue for me. For me it’s important that every student is joining very happily. He is confident that he can speak or follow the instructions like his other class fellows. I believe that acquiring a language other than one’s mother tongue takes a little bit more time. I have that patience so I correct my students at a certain time otherwise I accept the answer as it is. It is ok for me. I just want to be their guide and a motivator. And if you also want your learner to be a good speaker or a good writer of English then you should also follow this rule. You will definitely see the positive result. I would like to share one more key factor of enhancing the speaking and writing skills of English. Describing the objects/situations brings confidence in learners. Asking questions is also a skill and it improves the fluency in speaking. So I suggest you conduct more and more activities based on descriptions and questioning skills. You can take many different games for it. I believe that it’s important to show the difference in sentence patterns between English language and the learner's mother tongue. The lack of knowledge of sentence patterns is the major reason behind making mistakes. Every year at a certain interval of time I give practise of sentence patterns in the form of tenses. It helps the learner to overcome his mistakes. ❖ Video Reference - Classroom Activity 1 90

TEJAS –A Booster Path for Me Ms. Smita Kishor Matey ZPPS Kudal Kumbharwadi, Block: Kuda ‘TEJAS is a milestone in our educational revolution.’ Would you agree with it? Yes I would agree with it because it brings systematic changes with an innovative project. TEJAS is ‘Technology Enabled Education Through Joint Action and Strategic Initiatives’. This is achieved through face to face training, online training (Zoom meeting, Google meet) through moderated and self access courses, Teacher Activity Groups (TAGs) at the cluster level, the creation of online communities through popular social networking platforms and teacher mentoring programs. All of these elements of the project aim to improve the teacher’s professional understanding and impact their learners. You know, why do people continue to stay in the profession? 1. Motivation to join teaching. 2. Motivation to stay teaching. 3. Motivation to grow in teaching. Above sentences always motivate me for my own CPD. I joined as a TAG teacher in Vengurla block. Now I am appointed as a TAG co-ordinator for the Kudal cluster. It's a wonderful opportunity for me to develop my language skills through the activities for self development. It helps us to encourage and build up the confidence of TAG teachers. I got new ideas for implementing in my class. I use different types of social media like Facebook, Twitter, Whatsapp etc. TEJAS is an activity based creative project that’s why learners get new ideas like (words/phrases/expressions). So it helps to perfect the vocabulary. It is helpful to share new ideas and resources in the class. TEJAS is an activity based innovative project. It gives a chance to use different types of social media 91

like facebook, Twitter, Whatsapp. It clears all doubts of learners as well as of TAG teachers. What did I do differently, as I became a part of TEJAS Programme? For Students: 1) Arranging different types of activity based programmes. 2) Learn with fun. In the academic year 2020/21 because of the pandemic situation, the TAG meetings were shifted to an online platform. ‘Schools are closed but education is continuing.’ Online zoom meetings have been very beneficial for me. Parents and students are eagerly waiting for the teaching learning process. Resource books provide us with different types of activities and we are motivated to build up the confidence of our learners. Learners are enjoying activities like Birthday celebrations. For Teachers:- 1) It creatively built up confidence of TAG teachers 2) E-moderate online communities 3) Arrange CPD Programmes 4) Creates a new and conducive atmosphere for English language speakers. 5) Provide online platform for TAG teachers MY new creation about TAG Meeting: 1) Involvement of Teachers: - Use of proper creative activity has become a part of every session. It helps us review sessions, key words, and new words/phrases/sentences written by TAG teachers in their posters. 2) One for me and another for you: - This activity is created just for fun by TAG teachers and me also. The TAG teachers are ready every time after doing this activity. The TAG coordinator also creates new activities and helps others to develop confidence and give chances to everyone. 3) Arranging activities with self motivation:-a black board game, learners diaries, storytelling, jump left jump right, group making activity all participate in above activities with joy. TAG teachers’ made self oriented videos with their own ideas and shared them on whatsapp groups. “Teaching is an extremely challenging profession and TEJAS is a way to overcome them! Thanks TEJAS. 92

Ms. Pallavi Arjun Sail ZPPS Vetal Bambarde No.1 Block: Kudal We all know that the Teacher Activity Group (TAG) is formed to improve the quality of students’ learning of English in primary schools. TAG is a part of TEJAS – a dream project of the Maharashtra government. When I joined it as a TAG teacher, I was greatly influenced by the easy and engaging activities, no lectures and friendly atmosphere. Our first TAG meeting was held in January 2019. I enjoyed all the warmer activities as they were game based, funny yet embedding the content of the respective sessions. Such as, throw and catch the ball –this activity is about introducing oneself, memory game is about recalling sequences of the sentences or phrases or action words, how much are the T-shirts for?– for developing communication skills. Though we teachers enjoyed the TAG meetings, it was challenging to imply those practical based activities in our schools as most of the students had limited vocabulary and low confidence. But when I started the first warmer activity (giving introduction), my students enjoyed this kind of learning. When I started singing the action song (hands on my side what is this dear), students came forward to speak in English and participated in the conversation (introducing the partner). Mostly I have conducted the activities on Saturday morning on the playground of all the 1st to 7th standard students with the help of my fellow teachers. Students eagerly awaited the next Saturday for more fun while learning. In this way I've got much positive response for developing conversation skills in the students. Unfortunately our TAG coordinator got transferred and then our meetings came to a halt for a few months. In December 2020, I joined as a TAG coordinator in Vetal bambarde cluster. Our cluster head arranged our first TAG meeting with 14 enrolled teachers. Initially our 93

meetings were arranged on the online platform. But due to network issues the online mode had to be shifted to the offline mode. So, by following all the safety guidelines of covid-19, we conducted face to face TAG meetings. First we understood the motives of being part of the teacher activity group. I am here, as a TAG co-coordinator because of the three key points- 1) I know the importance of English as an international language. 2) I am interested in communicating in English. 3) I like to share my own learning experiences with my students, fellow teachers and use English in day to day life. I would like to say that TAG teachers in my cluster are very active and complete the given assignments happily. They listen, discuss and share their innovative ideas, thoughts with each other. For instance, every TAG meeting starts with a warmer activity. Our teachers put new ideas into such activities and enjoy them very well. In the ‘Language development’ section, all the topics are based on day to day life, on communication of experiences such as travelling situations, simple messages, common dishes, news reports etc. The teachers perform these activities with enthusiasm and also help each other while conversing in English. If someone lacks vocabulary or confidence while conversing, discussing or writing reflection, TAG teachers help each other to complete the session and the activities. I feel proud to say that all the TAG members in my cluster coordinate well with others, they have a healthy approach towards learning new things and of course keen interest in learning the English language. Because of their helpful nature and positive response, I have succeeded in conducting TAG meetings effectively. I thank our cluster head and BRP for giving me a chance to be a TAG coordinator. 94

Ms. Sumedha Vardekar ZPPS Ambrad Bajar, Block: Kudal TEJAS (Technology Enabled Education Through Joint Action and Strategic Initiatives) represents a transition from the traditional cascade model of teacher training to a more sustainable internally supported approach that promotes holistic development through local communities of practice. I am very much lucky to be part of the TEJAS programme. I am playing the role of a TAG coordinator as well as a TAG teacher. I have gained more confidence through this teacher activity group from the year 2019/20. I have learned many new ideas and techniques and I am using them in my lessons. The ice breaker activities are very useful for me while teaching. The activities like onion ring, agree-disagree, recognizing pictures related to words, carousel, inner –outer, don’t say (yes or no activity) action words game, story making with the help of the words , ladder race etc. have engaged each and every student and the students too feel motivated and have become confident while learning. They are quite interested in such types of activities. Now a days, I am using multilingual approaches for my learners. I always give opportunities to use their home language. It supports and demonstrates their understanding of learning the content. I am treating all my learners equally and with respect. Now I have started developing a positive attitude towards the diversity in my learners. “It is possible for me only because of TAG. (Teachers Activity group)”. 95

‘A Student is a central part of the teaching –learning process’. In the traditional English classes, teachers were teaching using the translation method and the students were afraid to speak in English. This condition completely changed after joining the TAG –‘Teacher Activity Group’. When I joined the TAG Meetings, I wanted to take part in the discussions. At that time, the resource book came in handy with the useful language and the vocabulary. Now I can discuss and converse with my TAG teachers freely. I didn't know about LD( Learning by doing), LR( Learning by reading), LW( Learning by Watching) reflection and action planning before joining TAG group. The English Whats app group helped us in language development that’s why my speaking skill developed. While taking the practice of the speaking skills, all learners’ speaking abilities also got developed. Learners tried to speak very well. Learners took part in short conversations, short role play, singing a poem and giving short instruction, group work, discussions etc. We made a ‘Best practice Video’ of speaking skills and uploaded it on the YouTube channel. Learners were very happy about it. Their happiness is most important for us. We are able to do all these things because of the TEJAS programme. We have understood the ways of language development through language reading. We are working in pairs to summarise the main ideas in the articles by underlining or highlighting words and phrases which are important. We have taken lots of useful ideas from LR sections. “When we speak, we understand..... When we read, we better understand.... But when we watch, we get involved ......” In this way learning by watching helps us to memorize vocabulary, developing listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. And how is the experience as a TAG coordinator? It’s amazing. The TEJAS program takes responsibility for our professional development. I am able to develop confidence in TAG teachers. They can communicate effectively in English in the classroom. Those who were shy to speak English, can speak very well now. Nowadays, there are online TAG meetings due to the pandemic situation, still there is still a positive response to it. All the TAG teachers attend the TAG Meetings on time and 96

remain active throughout it. TAG teachers share their own experiences of teaching and learning English. All teachers take part in group discussions. They use different types of tools for sharing their own ideas. I always try to give my best in each TAG meeting. As I like new technique, ideas, different activities and implement them in the tag meetings, they enjoy that. In the era of online teaching, the TAG teachers are making teaching videos, audios, flashcards, teaching aids for the enhancement of the English language. They share those videos on students - parents WhatsApp groups. In this way, with the help of TEJAS programme ‘though schools are closed but education is going on’. I have big support from the cluster head, BRP and DIET team who always guide us.They arrange different types of offline training like Spoken English, Mooc Orientation, CAP, Read To Me etc. The supervisory officers always give us chances to attend these courses to develop our personal and professional skills so that we can improve our knowledge. And what about the parents? I am happy to say that parents are satisfied with the progress of their children. Because of the TAG group activities, our children speak well. They take part in all English activities. “Some parents say, we cannot speak or write in English, but when our child tries to speak in English, try to write something in English we are very happy about that. Parents are thankful to the teachers for giving them various opportunities to communicate in English. This type of parent’s feedback gives us more energy to work harder. How to plan the next lesson? Which ideas can I share with other teachers? All things I have achieved only due to the TEJAS Programme; with the help of the TAG- Teacher Activity Group. We have got an English kit. How to make words? How to make sentences? Picture reading, How to spell words? How to take part in the conversation? How to read? How to speak? These are all the activities that students can do with the help of this English Kit. 97

Thank you for giving me a chance to join this TEJAS-Programme, Spoken English course, CAP, Read to me project. I am sure that I will develop my English skills in the future as well. Mr. Sushilkumar Thakur ZPPS Pat Andurle, Block: Kudal TAG has helped me a lot as a teacher in my daily teaching learning practice. I am using different ideas from it which are creating a deep impact on my learners. I am going to tell you one of the experiences which impressed me as well as my learners. While teaching the ‘Topic-Map’, I made a map of the city on a flex and explained it carefully to the learners so that they should know every aspect of the map. This topic is included in environmental science and English (for routine conversation). I was teaching this topic to 4 th standard students. After explaining the topic, I asked direction-based questions to learners. Then I drew a big map on the floor. I asked learners different questions. I made a starting mark on the floor and kept the learners on it. I gave instructions to the learners to reach the given destination. We performed this activity in pairs, in groups and as a whole class. At this stage learners participated with more confidence. My learners performed this activity joyfully even though it demanded extra-time. After this stage, I motivated the learners to make different maps on the floor and play the activity. They also collected different maps from newspapers, magazines and their own campus. In this way, learners read different papers and used a dictionary and went on enhancing their English on their own. 99

Ms. Pranali Hadikar ZPPS Patye Punarvasan, Sasoli Block:Dodamarg TEJAS is a three year partnership project between the Government of Maharashtra, Tata Trusts and the British Council to improve the quality of students’ learning English in primary school. An important part of TEJAS is a TAG that is the Teacher Activity Group. TAGs are semi-formal monthly teachers’ meetings and I am very glad to be a part of the TAG. According to me, TAG is a golden opportunity for teachers as well as for students to express themselves and to develop their English language. Our TAG coordinator Mr. Amit Patil sir has made it easier by his joyful and friendly attitude. Learners come from different family backgrounds. Some of them are first generation English learners. Some of them get to listen to English in the schools only. Their educational and economic backgrounds are not the same. They differ in terms of aptitudes, types of intelligence, attitude, perceptions and so on. So, in these situations TAG is the best platform for teachers and students to communicate with each other in a supportive environment. Teaching a language is a complex job. Quite often, teachers use traditional ways of teaching. As a result, learners feel bored. They feel demotivated. They listen to the teacher with elongated faces. In fact, they would like their lessons to be friendly interactions. They would like to learn through fun, through doing things. Therefore, language games acquire special significance in a language class. TAG gives us a golden opportunity to interact with our students with simple conversations, simple games and 100
