Angela Lewis Editor in Chief iSHINE Magazine MATTHEW SANTANA, JR. From the Editors’ Desk A NOTE FROM THE EDITORS 9.1.21 Great Day Beautiful People! Get Ready. Get Set. Let’s Shine! The September issue is here and it’s about the strength of a woman and women calling the shots and meaning business. 2021 is the year we finally got to see a female in the White House as the Vice President of the United States. The glass ceiling had been broken and women everywhere resonated with Sheree Whitfield’s famous quote, “Who gon check me Boo?” It was the signal to all little girls across the world that you can be whoever and whatever you choose. The strength and beauty of women lie in our uniqueness. We are in all shades, sizes, styles, and characteristics The time is now for women to embrace our passion and our power and recognize how Phenomenal we are! In case you need a reminder, here’s a poem that might help.

Phenomenal Woman BY MAYA ANGELOU Pretty women wonder where my secret lies. Phenomenal woman, I’m not cute or built to suit a fashion model’s size That’s me. But when I start to tell them, They think I’m telling lies. Men themselves have wondered I say, What they see in me. It’s in the reach of my arms, They try so much The span of my hips, But they can’t touch The stride of my step, My inner mystery. The curl of my lips. When I try to show them, I’m a woman They say they still can’t see. Phenomenally. I say, Phenomenal woman, It’s in the arch of my back, That’s me. The sun of my smile, The ride of my breasts, I walk into a room The grace of my style. Just as cool as you please, I’m a woman And to a man, Phenomenally. The fellows stand or Phenomenal woman, Fall down on their knees. That’s me. Then they swarm around me, A hive of honey bees. Now you understand I say, Just why my head’s not bowed. It’s the fire in my eyes, I don’t shout or jump about And the flash of my teeth, Or have to talk real loud. The swing in my waist, When you see me passing, And the joy in my feet. It ought to make you proud. I’m a woman I say, Phenomenally. It’s in the click of my heels, The bend of my hair, the palm of my hand, The need for my care. ’Cause I’m a woman Phenomenally. Phenomenal woman, That’s me.

Rhonda Turner The Strength of a Woman Removing Barriers Many black women in America report feeling pressured to act like a superwoman, projecting themselves as strong, self-sacrificing, and free of emotion to cope with the stress of this everyday world in their daily lives. Black women are certainly not seen as geniuses – or even labeled as hysterical or pathological. When a Black woman suffers from a mental disorder, we are labeled as weak. And weakness in Black women is intolerable.” Too often, Black women struggle with expectations and responsibilities that lead them to neglect their own health and wellbeing. There is little discussion about the challenges Black women face, and still less done to help them meet those challenges. Whoever said lightning never strikes twice failed to consider what life was like for Black women. Whether at home, at work, in an academic settings, racism and sexism create a dangerous storm for Black women to navigate through. When people assume you are strong enough to move mountains, no one will come to your aid. They believe it’s okay to pile on responsibilities and expectations without end. Yet, Black women can be just as delicate, fragile, and vulnerable as other women. Black women do not owe anyone back-breaking strength. We are human beings and that means we can feel overwhelmed at times does not mean we are not strong women! We are surviving because it is the Strength of a Woman!

\"Since I can remember, I have always been passionate about storytelling and impressed by the influence it has on people and the decisions they make in life.\" - Matthew S. The concept when you assist another woman in rising, we all shine. Help the women around you! Give her credit if you notice them doing a good job... notify them. Who would be your go-to in an emergency, your honest advice, or if you needed a key business introduction? When it comes to relationships, you frequently get what you give. Women must support one another rather than tear each other down. Making meaningful changes requires commitment and mindfulness, so the next time you are treated disrespectfully, offer more positive advice and lead by example. It is always preferable to take the high road. If every single woman who reads this decides to do so. SOME WOMEN ARE LOST IN THE FIRE. SOME WOMEN ARE BUILT FROM IT. This Anthology is looking for 10-20 women to step into your Power & Embrace your sister. “Go ahead tell me that I’m not good enough tell me I can’t do it because I will show you over and over that I can.”

Leveling Up! A New Awaking Women must start the change from within their own communities, homes, and souls. Yes, there is systematic racism and we have been put at a disadvantage, but we don’t make ourselves any better off by playing victims and not doing the work to heal ourselves and move forward. People, BLACK PEOPLE are having real success by doing things differently. We must chart a new course not as victims but as victors! Self-governance, self-determination, and self- actualization are crucial. As a person we must take charge of our own destiny. Women are the foundation of the family. EVERYTHING BEGINS IN THE MIND. Black people have been physically free but continue to live in mental slavery. THINK for yourself. We must stop following the crowds. We must address our own weaknesses. Everything starts with us…WOMEN! Leveling up never stops. You must always aim to be always the best version of yourself. Easier said than done but everything starts from YOU. It only takes one spark to start a fire.

What is a Secured Credit Card? Secured credit cards can be a good option for building or rebuilding your credit. Secured credit cards require a deposit that serves as collateral for purchases you make using the card. If you default on your payments, the card issuer keeps your deposit. Otherwise, if you keep your card in good standing, your credit card issuer will return your deposit. Here are 5 benefits of a Secured Credit Card You can often get approved for a secured credit card when you can’t get approved for a traditional credit card. • A secured credit card will send your account history to the credit bureaus to be included in your credit report. • A secured credit card can help you establish or re-establish your credit. • Your security deposit is only used when you default on your payment. • You can earn rewards on purchases with some cards, such as Discover and Navy Federal's secured cards. Who can be approved? Even though secured credit cards are available to people with bad credit, and even though the security deposit reduces the risk to the issuer, approval is not guaranteed for everyone: • The issuer will usually (but not always) check your credit report for signs that you're an unacceptable credit risk. If you're in the middle of a bankruptcy, for For more information contact: example, or you're currently delinquent on other accounts, or you've opened a bunch of new accounts Jennifer Williams recently, you're unlikely to be approved. Self-Care, Self-Affirmation and Self-Love Self-love is one of the purest forms of self-care. The art of loving self is a daily practice essential for self- preservation. Self-affirmation is a key component of self-love. Making positive, uplifting statements affirms and reinforces love for self. In order to love others, we must first love self. Self-care and self-affirmations are vital elements of recovery and healing. We empower ourselves to take charge of our own mental wellbeing through the practice of self-care. By practicing self-care, we give ourselves the authority to say what is healthy for our mental wellbeing and what is not, thus creating the opportunity for us to choose. Self-care is not selfish but is self-preserving. We cannot show up for others and give to others when we don't have it left in use to give. July 24th was International Self Care Day. It was a day that internationally encouraged everyone to engage in some type of self-care to promote mental well-being. Every day should be a day of self-care. Simple acts such as treating yourself to your favorite cup of coffee, starting your day with a nice, relaxing shower, listening to your favorite playlist, journaling, or going for a morning walk are all acts of self-care. Be mindful, be intentional, and be present with whatever you choose to do for self-care. The main factor to reach maximal benefit in acts of self-care is to be intentional and mindful. Allow yourself to move through each one of your senses to fully engage and immerse yourself in the self-care activity. Engaging in self-care is not only an act of self-preservation, but it is also self-rewarding. You will thank yourself that you did it! Self-affirmations replace self-defeating and self-sabotaging thoughts. Positive affirmations also provide hope and light. There are several ways to make self-affirmation a daily practice. One practice I encourage my clients to use is the mirror technique. The mirror technique is standing in the mirror and making positive affirmations. This technique force individuals to face themselves. This technique requires the individual to stand with a strong posture and make \"you\" statements such as \"you are fearfully and wonderfully made\" or \"you will do great things today\". This technique affirms positive thoughts of yourself. Another technique uses post it notes. The post it notes technique consists of writing positive, affirming statements on post it notes and sticking them in places such as a bedroom, bathroom, office, or car to serve as positive visual reminders throughout the day. They are like light bursts of sunshine. Strengthen your marriage by using the 5 Love Languages Good communication is the Key to a Healthy Marriage! Deborah Cooper Good Communication is the Key to a Healthy Marriage Ever wondered why some relationships just don’t seem to work out? Maybe you’re one of those people who has had relationships that seemed great at first but, as time goes by, the spark of fire and the feelings little by little fade away? Ever wondered why there are people who have been together for a long time and the fire is still burning? I have learned that relationships grow better when we understand each other. Lasting relationships take intentional commitment over time; however, it is much harder or even impossible if we don’t understand each other. Love languages” are how couples express their love —and how they can ultimately heal and nurture their own relationships. Love languages are also how different people experience love in their relationships, both giving and receiving love in a committed relationship with their spouse/partner. These love languages are words of affirmation, acts of service, quality time, physical touch, and giving/receiving gifts. Each carries own meaning.

Words of Affirmation Acts of Service Words of affirmation is expression of love Another love language is acts of service. it is the non-verbal through verbal communication that is form of love that can be time-consuming and exhausting, but supportive, encouraging, appreciative, and if it’s what your spouse or partner needs, then it’s worth the affirmative. 4 Knowledge Is Power DREAM BIGGER, REACH HIGHER AND ACHIEVE MORE… 4 Knowledge is Power was founded by Rhonda Williams- Turner in Delray Beach, Florida. With a Master of Science in Mental Health and Marriage & Family, Mrs. Turner began building a legacy that has grown over many years in leadership and her commitment to the youth within the communities. That service and dedication evolved into a larger purpose with a definite vision and mission for the organization. The organization seeks to positively influence and encourage today's youth during some of the most critical years of their lives. A time when they are faced with the need to acquire the attitudes, competencies, values, and social skills that will carry them forward to successful adulthood. As well as a time when they are faced with the need to avoid choices and behaviors that will limit their future potential. Parents and families play a critical role in helping our youth navigate this phase. It is our goal to work with schools, neighborhoods, and communities to extend and enhance the positive development Our mission is to provide positive activities to the community to help individuals accomplish more through educational and cultural experiences in hopes of stimulating the desire to dream bigger, reach higher, and achieve more! 4 Knowledge is Power organization is committed to providing high-quality programs for youth that will support healthy development, academic achievement, leadership, growth, and success. At the closing of each year, the young ladies participate in an annual Scholarship & Awards Gala. The Gala culminates each young lady’s matriculation through the program and celebrates their past, present and future achievements. At the Gala, each senior is awarded a “Trunks for Success Scholarship” which consists of a dormitory trunk filled with all the necessary essentials to live comfortably in a dormitory setting. Since the program’s inception, they have awarded over (100) trunks to graduating seniors, many of which were experiencing hardships in preparing for their first year of college. We are thankful to be entering our 9th year of service to girls in Palm Beach County.
