Preface: During this year, we have not stopped providing all that we can to strengthen our role and contribution to the promotion of the Palestinian society reality in the Gaza Strip, in addition to, working again with the youth, people with disabilities, media professionals, young activists and young women. We have also developed the role of media, supported skills and knowledge and invested the obtainable resources in order to boost change and transformation towards the best. Social Developmental Forum (SDF) did not work alone; this year, it attained its accomplishments along with a large base of partners from institutions, local groups and dozens of volunteers. Every year, SDF works sincerely to develop and expand this base as it deeply believes in the significance of joint work, openness to all and inculcating teamwork values to fulfill the greatest degree of transparency and active participation at all work stages. We always yearn to integrate all groups in the local community starting from planning, needs assessment, service provision and ending by evaluation. The year 2017 marked a remarkable one for SDF team at the level of programs development. The second half of 2017 witnessed the launch of youth program and qualitative addition in social and economic empowerment programs, besides the huge widening in the circle of local and abroad partnerships in order to develop the role of media, advocacy issues and raising awareness of basic rights and the services provided for youth and women sectors in the Gaza Strip. In the pages of this report, we review a new year of achievements and aspirations. We hope to be up to the community and moral responsibilities and to able to offer everything new and useful to contribute in improving the reality of the Gaza Strip, especially under the increasing political, social and economic complications that the Palestinian territories are experiencing. January 2017 Keef Shayefah Media Professionals and New Media Activists who are the Closest to the Marginalized Categories An initiative aims to integrate media professionals and new media activists with the issues of vulnerable categories in the society and promote the use of new media in relation to anti-corruption issues, services and access to information, besides the violations endured by these categories. Additionally, it works on assessing the reality of accessing information and filing complaints related to services through the integration among media activists, bloggers, new media activists and the targeted groups. 05Annual Report 2017

June – November 2017 The idea of the initiative is to launch a bus tour for activists and media professionals with the participation of 50 media activists,new media and media professionals from different media trends.The tour covered 3 stages for nongovernmental organizations that present services for youth, women and people with disabilities. Many interactive sessions with organizations’ representatives, the targeted groups and media activists were held. The participants in theses sessions highlighted their reality concerning obtaining the basic services, their assessment to anti- corruption efforts on the level of the organization and the targeted groups, their right to access to information and their experience in dealing with complaints system. The initiative also included launching a campaign on social media platforms and mass media to raise awareness of the right to access to information and basic services and their reality. Improve Reality of Obtaining Information and Basic Services Social Developmental Forum (SDF) and Collation for Accountability and Integrity – AMAN launched a strategic partnership course in order to develop a set of interventions to enhance transparency environment and the reality of accountability in Palestine. The partnership extends to 3 years in an accumulative approach where many activities were implemented in 2017. Regarding the course, we will introduce some activities in this part of the report. Accountability is a Practice and Access to Information is a Right Within this frame, we worked on the following sections: • Raise awareness and skills of activists and staff working at disability sector in the Gaza Strip about the right to access to information, community accountability, monitoring mechanisms and filing complaints; this was conducted through an 18-hour training program. • Develop reception of complaints and information disclosure system for 10 nongovernmental institutions work in community rehabilitation services sector in the Gaza Strip. • Train the working staff at 10 community rehabilitation centers on concepts of integrity, management of complaints and disclosure of in information at the non-profit organizations as a part of improving the transparency environment of rehabilitation sector in the Gaza Strip. • Discussion sessions with media professionals and civil society activists about the reality of obtaining basic services and information availability. 07Annual Report 2017

Boys and Girls Participate in Anti-Corruption Efforts: Students’ Initiatives to fight Corruption and enhance Community Accountability Project in one of the projects implemented in partnership with AMAN and the Ministry of Education in the Gaza Strip. It aims to involve school students in the efforts exerted to promote the environment rejecting corruption and inculcate this culture through practical application for a series of students' projects. During this year, a group of interventions was implemented as; • Conduct awareness sessions about corruption and the methods to fight it, besides techniques of including students in anti-corruption efforts whereas the interventions targeted counselors and teachers in 21 schools in the 5 governorates of the Gaza Strip. • Initiate a competition in preparatory governmental schools to design students’ initiatives that shed the light on acts of corruption in the field of services provision or misuse of public money. • Implement 3 students’ initiatives discuss anti-corruption efforts in respect of public services provision sector. 08 Annual Report 2017

October – December 2017 Youth Power Initiatives Initiatives are Effective Tools in Community Change November – December 2017 As a part of enhancing youth’s role and improve their integration and contribution to their local communities, SDF commenced Youth Initiatives Project in partnership with UNESCO and within NETMED Youth Program funded by the European Union. Five creative youth initiatives, which have potential motivational influences, were designed to concentrate on empowering the youth and their engagement; the participants were from both genders age 15-35 in the Gaza Strip. 09Annual Report 2017

The Red Gold Initiative North Gaza Strip – Beit Lahia It is an initiative to assist the Palestinian farmers to harvest strawberry in order to inculcate the culture of voluntary work and promote the local awareness of strawberry crops and its significance. The initiative aimed at identifying the challenges endured by framers on the level of production and the Israeli hindrances. It also came as a part of encouraging the national products and strengthening youth’s information in terms of agriculture in Palestine. Voluntarily, 50 young men and women age 18-24 took part in the initiative. Additionally, the initiative included some activities; most notably field orientation tour, taking part in harvesting crops in strawberry farms in north Gaza Strip, discussion about strawberry planting and the challenges faced by the Palestinian farmers and special tweeting session on social media about the initiative with hashtag #red_gold. 10 Annual Report 2017

“Plant with Us and You will see the Charm Initiative” European Hospital – Khanyounis Governorate It is a youth initiative implemented by establishing a garden at Oncology Department in the European Hospital in Khanyounis – South the Gaza Strip. This occurred after assessing the Department’s need for a special garden because of the absence of rest places whether for patients or visitors and the lack of green spaces in the Hospital. Additionally, the initiative added to the Hospital’s aesthetic environment since it had a positive effect on both the patients and the staff members. The initiative based on designing the garden and implementing the construction works, besides conducting entertainment day for the children at Oncology Department. Wooden chairs Initiative Gaza and North Governorates The idea of the initiative is to manufacture a number of wooden chairs via reusing old woods by UNRWA Artisan College students and then distribute them to 3 schools and a garden in Gaza Strip. It aims at strengthening the youth's role in providing local services and supplying some schools in Gaza with rest chairs. The initiative students managed to produce 20 wooden chairs for 3 UNRWA schools in the Gaza Strip and the European Hospital's garden. 11Annual Report 2017

Challenge the Change Initiative It is a competition among 10 youth teams who are active in the domain of using social media platforms in the Gaza Strip. It seeks to achieve the largest extent of interaction and participation among the youth in terms of civic engagement issues and reflecting them via digital tools. The initiative yearns to support the right of youth to active participation; socially and politically, in addition to enhancing the role of social media networks in reinforcing and advocating the rights of youth and boosting the digital content regarding youth’s issues and advocacy. One hundred young men and women concerned with community work took part in the challenge, along with new media activists and number of media professionals. Challenge the Change Competition was implemented with the participation of 10 youth teams from the Gaza Strip representing 70 young men and women from social media activists. As a part of the competition, 10 campaigns were launched on social media networks in respect of political involvement for the youth. Eventually, upon evaluating the campaigns, 3 teams were crowned as the winners. 12 Annual Report 2017

Encouraging Domestic Tourism Initiative Archeological Sites in the Gaza Strip Encourage visiting the archeological sites and raise local awareness about them is the ultimate objective for this initiative which was launched by a group of youth interested in promoting domestic tourism in the Gaza Strip. The initiative targeted 8 sites in the Gaza Strip as they were provided with guiding signboards to be easily identified, in addition to putting introductory bulletin boards inside them. This action was taken due to the lack of such boards or the damage of existing ones as a result of negligence and poor governmental services. This will facilitate the access of citizens to the targeted sites; in addition to increasing the knowledge and information of the visitors about the archeological sites and how it is crucial maintaining them as cultural heritage for the people of Palestine. 13Annual Report 2017

October 2017 Promoting Youth Role as Change Leaders in their Communities “Let’s Change” \"Let’s Influence and Make the Change\" Social Developmental Forum has sought to develop and launch \"Let's Change Program\"; a program aims to promote the youth role as change leaders in their communities in order to take part and create the change in their local societies. The Program especially focuses on increasing youth opportunities to interact with their reality and to experience their community’s issues; additionally, it seeks the active contribution of youth to create the positive change through using advocacy and social media tools as methods to express opinions, influence their issues and supporting them. Moreover, the initiative considers the issues related to the most vulnerable categories in the Palestinian society. The Program, including its first stage, was commenced in the Gaza Strip in October 2017 by SDF in partnership with British Consulate-General- Jerusalem. 14 Annual Report 2017

Build the Youth’s Capacity in Life Skills and Advocacy As a part of “Let’s Change” Program, a training program was conducted to develop the abilities of 73 young men and women age 18-25 in the field of basic life skills, in addition to designing and implementing advocacy campaigns. The pieces of training concentered on self-affirmation and communication and networking skills as practical tools for the concepts of participatory leadership and soul-searching in order to assert the pioneering role to achieve the positive change in the society. The pieces of training were divided into 90 training hours and covered a group of topics; such as team building, self-enhancement, communication and networking skills, art of dialogue, time management, group work, creative thinking, participatory leadership, advocacy concepts and tools, phases of designing campaigns, intervention project management and community change. Social Media Networks: Tools to Influence and Change As a part of “Let’s Change” Program, the technical skills and knowledge of 73 participants in the field of professional use of social media networks on the level of self-marketing were developed. Furthermore, these capacities were invested in advocacy and awareness campaigns. The training program lasted for 90 training hours and delivered by a group of consultants in new media; it also included an interactive application for using networks, management of content and developing performance on the digital platforms. 15Annual Report 2017

Digital Blogging and Journalistic Writing: New Training Course Twenty young men and women from Let’s Change team received training on digital blogging and journalistic writing. The training came within the second phase of specialized pieces of training of the Program and it was conducted In November in Gaza City. It is to be noted that the training aimed to promote creative and journalistic digital writing skills. The training dealt with a number of topics related to journalistic arts, types of writing and practical samples which were applied by the participants during the course. The duration was 20 intensive hours in order to improve the text content through social media and digital platforms. Photography and Video Making: Each Idea is a Story and Each Story is a Picture – Video Editing Training Video Editing Training is one of the specialized pieces of training of Let's Change Program. It was implemented over 40 hours and targeted 20 members of the Program. The training enhanced participants' skills concerning video editing techniques, dealing with visual materials, developing innovative ideas, producing infovideo, basics of photography and short movies, in addition to dealing with music, sound effects and standards of publishing on social media networks. 16 Annual Report 2017

Determine Issues and Priorities of Youth Sector: Members of Let's Change Program adopted a number of tools to determine the major challenges faced by the youth in the Gaza Strip and the main priorities. They implemented this action by conducting sessions with their relatives, decision makers and workers in both sectors; civil and governmental, in addition to meetings at the Palestinian universities in the Gaza Strip. The outcomes showed that the youth in Gaza sustain a group of problems, most notably; Concerning major priorities, they were right to work and civic engagement. 17Annual Report 2017

Raise Awareness and Advocacy Campaigns During 2017, Let’s Change Program members launched 2 campaigns aimed to raise local awareness and highlight group of issues connected to the priorities that have been the center of youth’s attention. According to the previous phases, the team has implemented the following: A Right, not a Favor Advocating Right to Work for People with Disabilities (PWDs) This campaign was launched concurrently with the International Day of Disabled Persons; it included several activities, most notably; • 4 awareness workshops in the universities in the Gaza Strip targeted 200 students to raise their awareness about the rights of PWDs. • Campaign on social media platforms including infographic video tweets, press reports, live stream on social media networks. On Independence Day Let’s Change team initiated awareness campaign about the Palestinian Independence Day in order to support the right of Palestinians to establish their independent sovereign state according to UN resolutions in this regard. It was also part of implementing activities that promote the civic engagement as a priority for the youth. The campaign was launched on social media networks through tweeting campaign on microblogging network and broadcasting tens of awareness digital materials like videos, texts and graphics. Let’sChallengeCompetition Youth and Political Participation Let's Challenge Competition essentially depends on using social media networks; it was launched among a group of youth teams in Palestine and conducted in December 2017. Ten teams took part and competed to produce innovative distinguished content on social media platforms to shed light on the reality of youth political participation from different perspectives. The first version of the competition was launched by a joint activity as a part of Let’s Change Program and Youth Power Initiatives which were implemented in the same year and focused on age 18-28. The participants from both genders were divided into 5 groups, with 5 each, representing; the activists, video editors, photographers and social media content managers; all of them have the dynamics of group work. The challenge in figures: • Participation of 10 youth teams in the Gaza Strip representing 70 young men and women from social media activists. • Launch 10 campaigns on social media networks in respect of political participation issues • 3 teams won 3 prizes after the evaluation process for the campaigns Teams’ productions during the competition: 20 Annual Report 2017

June - August 2017 Improved access of persons with disabilities to social services in the Middle Area – Gaza Strip The initiative was launched in partnership with Humanity and Inclusion (HI) within the project of; building the capacity of multiple stakeholders to integrate persons with disabilities into their marginalized communities in the occupied Palestinian territories. The initiative was implemented through a participatory approach based on the involvement of persons with disabilities and CBOs in the implementation of a series of awareness, lobbying and field action activities to bring about a change in the level of local awareness, political and procedural change by social service providers in the Meddle Area region. As well as investing in social media platforms in disseminating information about available social services to ensure that they reach a wider segment in the community. 22 Annual Report 2017

Main Activities: - Capacity building for 15 participants from representatives of service providers and persons with disabilities, in the rights approach for persons with disabilities through 18 training hours. - Improving skills for 20 activists with disabilities in fields of planning, follow-up and evaluation to contribute to raising their competence in the management and design of community programs through 18 training hours. - Developing code of conduct for 21 institutions working in the social services to activate the role of persons with disabilities in planning, implementation, follow-up and evaluation of social services. - Launching campaign to raise public awareness on the rights of persons with disabilities and social services, including: 23Annual Report 2017

We Work: Socio-economic inclusion of Women with Disabilities in the Gaza Strip We Work was launched in 2016 and will last to 2018 for enhancing the inclusion of WWDs by working on the socio–economic dimension. The project is implemented by SDF in partnership with EducAid Italy, El Amal Rehabilitation Society and Gaza Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CGGI). The project is funded by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS). 24 Annual Report 2017

During 2017, We Work contributed to improve the livelihood for a group of WWDs and their families and to improve their inclusion positively in the daily life activities through a set on interventions, concluded in: Enhance Communication and Management Skills SDF started 2017 with enhancement for communication and management skills of 20 young unemployed women with disabilities to empower them engage in the labor market, especially in the NGOs. The participates received 25 training-hour course in communication skills, self-affirmation, negotiation and persuasion skills. Women who participated in the 25-hour management training course have increased their knowledge in time management, problem solving, decision making, meeting and sessions management and wiring administrative reports. Accessible NGOs As a part of SDF contribution in improving access of PWDs to facilities and services. 6 NGOs were adapted to be ready to include some women with disabilities within the staff. The adaptation included setting signboards with sign language and Braille alphabets for people with hearing and visual disabilities in addition to adapting some entrances and toilets for people with physical disabilities. Engagement in Non-profit Sector 12 young women with disabilities were experienced paid training in NGOs after empowering them to engage in the labor market. It was a substantial change in socio- economic situation for most of them. It was the first experience for some women to engage in daily activities and to build new relationships and contact closely to different people. The experience was very good for all trainees to practice some acquired skills, learn new skills, strengthen self-confidence, build strong personality and secure their basic needs and daily expenses. Media Skills are a Gate to Expression and Empowerment In December 2017, SDF conducted a specific training course in media skills include video making, press writing and use of social media networks in E-marketing. The training aimed at empowering 34 employed young women with disabilities and small business owners to express themselves and improve investing the available tools in promotion for their projects and the products and services they provide. The gained skills contributed in maximize the targeted audience and access to wide range of customers. 25Annual Report 2017

June 2017 - January 2018 Improving the local response to the rights of work and access for persons with disabilities in the Gaza Strip The project was implemented within the project of strengthening civil contribution and national dialogue through the independent Palestinian media, in partnership with the Internews Foundation and funded by the Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI). The project was launched to contribute to the following: - The community is more aware of the rights of persons with disabilities - Persons with disabilities advocate their right to access and work in a participatory manner - The private sector is more responsive to the PWDs’ rights of work, and access - Develop the role of media as an effective tool in supporting the rights of persons with disabilities Main Activities: - Increasing media awareness about the right to work and access for persons with disabilities through 12 workshop training hours with participation of 18 media activists from various media organizations. - Increasing awareness of 24 employees from non-governmental organizations in the southern Gaza Strip on the rights of persons with disabilities especially the rights of work and access, in accordance with the human rights approach, through 12 workshop training hours. - Conducting 10 awareness workshops on the rights of people with disabilities, and the rights of work and access in particular, targeted 190 beneficiaries from the provinces of the Gaza Strip. - Strengthening the relationship of media professionals in the Gaza Strip with the issues of persons with disabilities and advocating for their rights through two dialogue sessions held between media professionals and related parties and persons with disabilities, with participation of 30 journalists from different media organizations. - Developing code of conduct to improve and adapt policy alignment for 30 non- governmental organizations operating in the Gaza Strip and commit themselves to improving their response at the level of regulations and practice: employment and access. - Designing a mural focus on the right of work, with participation of a group of artists. 26 Annual Report 2017

October 2017 - August 2018 Support the efforts of persons with disabilities to contribute to positive social and economic empowerment in the Gaza Strip The project implemented by the Social Development Forum funded by the Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI) SDF seeks to promote the empowerment of persons with disabilities socially and economically by encouraging economic service providers to harmonize their policies so as to be more responsive to the needs of persons with disabilities, to facilitate their access to financial services, services and information, to encourage the development of incentive programs and to ensure their access to opportunities To create an appropriate working environment for them, and to educate employees of banking institutions about the rights of persons with disabilities and the correct bases for dealing with them, and to work in a holistic manner. Main Activities: - Conducting 15 exploratory field visits to financial institutions; to review their policies, discuss their development, and measure their responsiveness to the needs of persons with disabilities. During the visits, the parties concerned were invited to play a role in the project activities; to provide support to persons with disabilities. - Conducting 2 focus group discussions: the first one conducted with participation of 10 providers of financial and banking services in the Gaza Strip, and the second one conducted with participation of experts in rehabilitation, human rights, Palestinian law, and a group of PWDs activists and entrepreneurs. The discussions contribute to: • Discuss the requirements of financial institutions to promote the inclusion of persons with disabilities and facilitate access to financial services. • Measurement of disability sensitivity, past experience with persons with disabilities, available and possible financial facilities, characterization of the code of conduct, and the outline of the financial inclusion Guidelines for Persons with Disabilities. 29Annual Report 2017

• Develop a memorandum of understanding agreed upon by the financial service providers in the Gaza Strip to enhance the economic participation of persons with disabilities and develop a reference manual on the financial inclusion of persons with disabilities, signed by 10 financial and banking institutions in the Gaza Strip. Capacity building of financial service providers: In order to improve the disability response of the selected financial services providers and expand their client base to include persons with disabilities, a training course on disability and equality was held with participation of 18 employees from 10 banking and financial institutions, 24 training hours, according to the components of the Community Rehabilitation Matrix and the International Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.  30 Annual Report 2017

Launching the Guide to Best Practices for Enhancing the Financial Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities In December 2018, during a press conference in Gaza City, SDF launched the Best Practices Guide for Enhancing the Financial Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities, in order to better practice the financial inclusion of persons with disabilities in banking institutions and financial service providers. It also contributes to enabling people with disabilities to access financial services, meet their needs and develop their small businesses in order to secure their source of income by developing and harmonizing the financial environment of banking institutions and financial service providers such as banks and lending institutions. The guide, which is the first of its kind in Palestine in the context of the organization of efforts in addition to adopting mechanisms and programs of work with their partners in the community of persons with disabilities and institutions working with people with disabilities directly, in order to achieve more comprehensive results and supports the achievement of sustainable community development. The guide addresses all components of the Palestinian banking community, \"Banks and lending institutions of all kinds\", where they are expected to respect the application of the principles contained therein, in order to promote the full participation of persons with disabilities. The best practices mentioned in the guide were practical recommendations on the provision of financial grants, practical recommendations for loans, recommendations for financing credit lines or establishment of trust funds, practical recommendations for revolving fund management, and practical recommendations to support self-help groups and the networking of persons with disabilities in financial institutions. 31Annual Report 2017
