Thank you, papa-san and mama-san! On the 4th to 18th of December 2018, we represented Malaysia as exchange students to visit Japan. We stayed in a small town called Oamishirasato in the Chiba Prefecture where we attended Oami Technical High School. Besides studying, we also visited many Japanese landmarks like the Tokyo Imperial Palace, Meiji Shrine, Disneyland and several shopping districts. Thanks to our wonderful host, Mr. Kakugawa, we were able to get a taste of the traditional Japanese lifestyle too. For instance, the Japanese tea ceremony, calligraphy and meal preparation. Despite the language barrier, we were able to make many new friends and had an amazing time in Japan. It was undeniably the best trip ever where we got to learn and have fun at the same time! On 29th December 2018, about 305 Form 1 students of 2019 reported to SMJK Ave Maria Convent for an orientation. Most of them were accompanied by their parents. The students gathered in Mother Pauline Hall at 9am for a briefing about the school rules and regulations by the school administrators. They received their textbooks after they were introduced to their class teachers and classmates in their respective classes. Meanwhile, parents were gathered in Chin Pek Soo Hall. They were briefed by the school administrators on school rules and the importance of co- curriculum. F1 ORIENTATION FORM 1 ROADSHOW On 12th January 2019, a curriculum roadshow took place at Dato' Chin Pek Soo Hall. All Form 1 students attended the roadshow. The students had the opportunity to choose their uniformed bodies, clubs and games that best suit their interests. The seniors of each uniformed bodies, clubs and games put on their most impressive and stunning performances to attract more new members to their respective clubs. 78

Prefectorial Board Leadership Camp 2019 Theme : Courage To Take The Lead The morning session perfects of AMC Prefectorial Board organised a leadership camp in Outbac Broga, Selangor from 23rd March to 25th March 2019. The theme of the camp was “Courage To Take The Lead”. The aim of the camp was to instill leadership qualities into the prefects so that they could lead the Prefectorial Board. One of the most challenging activities we had in the camp was hiking up the Broga Hill. All 82 prefects hiked up the Broga Hill before dawn to enjoy the sunrise. The prefects helped each other giving encouragements and motivation so that everyone could reach the top of the hill. Lastly, we learnt to be brave to stand out from the crowd to take the lead and always help others during hard times. 82

Appointment of student leaders On 25th February 2019, a special ceremony for the appointment of student leaders in school was held. They were the prefects, librarians, class representatives and peer facilitators. Our guest of honour for this special occasion was Miss Irene Lock Sow Mei, who is a chemical engineer. She was a blood cancer survivor who went forth to overcome her illness to achieve success. In her speech, she enlightened everyone about her journey to success despite all the odds she encountered. She inspired the students to work hard and never give up. “With great power, comes great responsibility “, she quoted as she encouraged the students to fulfill their duties diligently and with responsibility. 83

Kini, Dr Chew Ait Jane bekerja di Klinik Kesihatan Kamunting di daerah Larut Matang dan Selama. Pada hari tersebut, beliau berpeluang untuk menyaksikan persembahan yang telah disediakan oleh pasukan pancaragam sekolah kita. Majlis tahunan ini diadakan untuk memberikan penghargaan kepada murid-murid yang telah meraih kejayaan dalam bidang akademik khususnya pada peringkat SPM dan PT3 bagi tahun 2018. Acara dimulakan dengan perbarisan lintas hormat para peserta yang mengambil bahagian mengikut badan beruniform, kelab dan rumah masing-masing. De Rhythmic Chimes On 30th March 2019, the Symphony Orchestra held a concert themed ‘De Rhythmic Chimes’. The Symphony Orchestra comprises 86 students and 4 teacher advisors who put in blood, sweat and tears to ensure the success of the concert. The audience’s heartstrings were pulled by the orchestra’s enchanting music. Their magnificent performance had exceeded everyone’s expectations and managed to take everyone’s breath away. Konsert Kelab Tarian Pada 20 Julai 2019, Kelab Tarian telah mengadakan konsert bertema “Arise and Shine”. Konsert ini telah mendapat sambutan meriah daripada orang ramai. Mereka telah mempersembahkan pelbagai jenis tarian seperti tarian latin, balet dan tarian moden. Kemuncak persembahan pada malam itu ialah tarian “k-pop” yang bertajuk “Kill This Love”. Pihak sekolah juga menjemput penari dari Yencci Studio dan kelab tarian Shen Jai High School untuk memeriahkan konsert tersebut. Selain itu,”Colour Guard”pancaragam sekolah, TITANS dan koir sekolah turut memeriahkan suasana konsert pada malam yang bersejarah tersebut. Konsert ini suatu kolaboratif antara ahli-ahli Kelab Tarian untuk menempa kejayaan pada masa hadapan sebagai kemenjadian sahsiah dan disiplin diri. Tahniah dan Syabas kepada Kelab Tarian kerana berjaya meningkatkan imej sekolah. 95

AAN 2019 Go Forth the IKIGAI Way! There was a buzz of excitement among the Form 5 students as the 8th annual AMC Alumni Network (AAN) event was finally happening. This special day was held on 13th July 2019, in Mother Pauline Hall. The theme of this event was “Go Forth the IKIGAI Way!” - ‘ikigai’ being a Japanese concept that means ‘a reason for being’. The day started with various icebreakers, followed by an introduction to the AMC Alumni. Candy Lo, the chairwoman of AAN 2019 explained the concept thoroughly and shared her life experiences in achieving satisfaction in her profession. To discover your ‘ikigai’, one must first find what you are most passionate about and then how you can express that passion. This was followed by an interactive session where alumni with different careers shared their experiences. The girls were glad to receive the inside scoop of the industries they were interested in. All in all, those of us who came left richer having gained a glimpse of the future through insights shared from our alumni. 96

A WALK DOWN school is where many of us make MEMORY LANE deep, lifelong connections. Then FOR AMCians OF 1969 Aafter we graduate, we head into A walk down memory lane the wild blue yonder…and sometimes, we for AMCians of 1969 struggle to maintain friendships. On 15th of June 2019, the 1969 Alumni returned to their alma mater, 50 years after graduation. Guffaws filled the air as this group of matured ladies were taken on a tour round the school by the library prefects under the supervision of the head librarian, Tang Yen Ee and deputy head librarian, Beh Rui Ying. Madam Liew Swee Fong, our principal, gave a welcoming speech followed by a splendid performance by the cheerleaders, the Titans, who wowed them. After that, they took a walk down memory lane to all the nooks and corners of the school, finally landing them to the newly renovated library, renamed Barré Haven. They were impressed by the Cafe Corner, offering snacks and drinks for sale to students, while enjoying the pleasure of reading books and Kindle Readers. It was indeed a great transformation for these golden girls. But no matter what changes occur, AMC will always have a feeling of home for them, for this was where they grew up, providing the foundation for their formative years. There is a proverb that states, “When eating bamboo sprouts, remember the person who planted them” and this proverb resonates deeply with the culture of giving back. Thus, we wish to thank the 1969 Grads for giving back, through sponsoring the lettering ‘Barré Haven’ for our library. When one completes a degree, one walks away with more than new knowledge, skills and expertise in their field. One also graduates with new insights, credentials, and connections; all of which can be put to work for their alma mater and its students.  Daughters of Ave Maria, Forward, let us march. 97

Teachers’ Day Celebration On 14th June, SMJK Ave Maria Convent held its annual Teachers’ Day celebration. That day was indeed filled with joy and excitement as students expressed their gratitude, love and appreciation to their teachers. The event started off with a speech by the head prefect, Chong Jia En and our beloved principal, Pn Liew Swee Fong. Before the cake-cutting ceremony, the teachers sang “Kami Guru Malaysia” in unison and recited the teacher’s pledge led by our principal. During the celebration, the crowd was entertained with many splendid performances by our talented students including trendy KPOP dances, hilarious dramas as well as singing performances. The celebration reached its climax when one of our teachers, Pn Sobana presented us a Chinese Song, which left the audience in awe and amazement. The event ended well. A simple yet significant ceremony to remind everyone to appreciate the important roles played by teachers in our lives. 98
