A 2018 meta- analysis of 45 studies published in The Journal of Nutrition concluded that high-fiber diets (defined as at least 25 grams of fiber per day) reduced the risk of type 2 diabetes. Research shows fermentable fibers in pears and apples can stimulate healthy bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract and improve post-meal blood sugar levels. Three cohort studies following more than 180,000 men and women over 18 years found a lower incidence of type 2 diabetes among those eating at least three servings of pears and/or apples per week. Eaten with its peel, one medium pear provides nearly a quarter of your daily fiber need. You might not be thinking “fiber” when you eat creamy guacamole. But half an avocado packs 5 grams. And according to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, people who eat avocados have better diet quality and consume less added sugars. In addition, a 2013 study published in the Nutrition Journal found that overweight people who ate half an avocado at lunch felt fuller all day long than those who did not. To further boost fiber (and antioxidants), try your guacamole with bell pepper strips instead of chips. Grape tomatoes are also a good source of fiber—3 grams in just 1 cup. And the lycopene in tomatoes may protect against type 2 diabetes due to its anti-inflammatory properties. The best part about end-of-summer produce? Much of it can be enjoyed raw. They are truly minis in the melon world, typically no larger than a small grapefruit. HAMI MELONS Crunchy-crisp texture, light sweetness, and a floral aroma are hallmarks of Hami melons. They trace their roots to (and are named for a city in) the Xinjiang region of China. Their netted golden rinds are streaked with green. HONEYDEW MELONS A melon mainstay, standard honeydews have green-tinged flesh that’s very sweet and a good source of vitamin C, folate, and fiber. GOLDEN HONEYDEW MELONS When ripe, these honeydew hybrids have a bright, yellow rind and stark white flesh that’s sweeter than standard honeydew.
