TIP 3 GET CREATIVE BETTER BORDERS While some locations offer a steady stream 51 of natural borders, at other locations, you may have to take matters into your own hands and get more creative. While we don’t suggest damaging foliage, there’s nothing wrong with lowering a branch to fit with your composition. What’s more, the truth of this technique is that you don’t need a huge border to make a big difference to your frame. Even picking up a curved stick can provide interest to the corners of the frame. In bright light, it may also be worth switching back to the optical or electronic viewfinder, because LCDs can sometimes be difficult to view due to the glare from the sun, especially when shooting in the middle of the day. TIP 4 TIME TO EXPERIMENT The clue to creative framing is in the name. Get high, get low and switch up your focal lengths to vary your imagery. Don’t be afraid to experiment, and why not set yourself the challenge of capturing the same subject (in our case, this stately home) from multiple viewpoints using different natural borders. Once you’ve tried this technique once, you’ll begin to notice natural borders wherever you go and can incorporate them into other genres of image-making. For example, the next time you’re shooting portraits or street photography, try framing the subject with a natural border (as above). It’s challenging but rewarding! The Canon Magazine

WATCH VIDEO ONLINE VIEW THE VIDEO http://bit.ly/pp_193_3 PROJECT 3 TIP 1 EF-EOS R ADAPTER The EF-EOS R Mount Adapter is the standard version Canon makes, enabling you to fit your collection of old Canon EF or EF-S lenses to its new mirrorless full-frame RF mount bodies, such as the EOS R6. It’s also the most budget-friendly of the four adapters we look at here, costing just £119 at the time of publication. The adapter increases the flange distance caused by having a mirror in Canon’s DSLRs but this is absent on mirrorless models, and the spacer allows the older lenses to be used correctly. These adapters also feature electronic connectors so that lens and camera communication is possible, which means you can adjust your aperture and use features like autofocus without a hitch. TIP 2 CONTROL RING MOUNT ADAPTER EF-EOS R The Control Ring Mount Adapter for EF-EOS R gets an upgrade in the form of a control ring, which has become commonplace on Canon’s RF lenses. It enables you to control settings in much the same way as the command dials on the camera body control the aperture and shutter speed. We find the extra dial handy for quick ISO adjustments when using your old EF optics. To set up the control ring, press the Menu button and scroll through the Function menus until you see Customize Dials, where you can make changes to your front and rear command dials, as well as assign a function to the control ring on the adapter. 54 www.digitalcameraworld.com

WITHOUT POLARIZER EOS ADAPTERS WITH POLARIZER TIP 3 CIRCULAR POLARIZER WITH VND FILTER A circular polarizing filter is essential for a number of photographic disciplines, but perhaps most notably for increasing punchy blues in skies when shooting landscapes, and for reflections in water or metal and glass, which make them useful for product and automotive photography, too. This adapter from Canon uses the Drop-In Filter Mount Adapter for EF-EOS R and comes loaded with a removable C-PL filter. “Circular” refers to the pattern etched on the glass and not the shape of the filter itself. A wheel on the drop-in filter is used to turn the polarizer in order to change its strength, and is a breeze to fine-tune even when your eye is looking through the EOS R camera’s electronic viewfinder (EVF). WITHOUT VND FILTER TIP 4 VARIABLE ND FILTER 55 Just like the circular polarizer drop-in adapter above, the variable neutral density (VND) adapter uses the same Drop-In Filter Mount Adapter EF-EOS R housing, and can be bought separately without the housing, which would save a little money. The great thing about these adapters is that the filters are positioned behind the rear element of the lens, so filters can be used even with wide lenses that have a bulbous front element and no front filter thread – when these optics would usually require an elaborate and expensive filter housing. VND filters enable you to gradually block out light for slower shutter speeds, blocking out 1-stop of light at the minimum setting and a whopping 9-stops at the maximum setting. Variable ND filters are great for video use, too. The Canon Magazine

The AF performs brilliantly when shooting video, too, not even being fooled by subjects disappearing behind obstructions. While it possesses lightning-fast shooting speeds, the buffer’s limited by the choice of SD cards over CFexpress, with maximum bursts hitting 46 Raws and 184 JPEGs. EARLY VERDICT Our thoughts after first tests of the Canon EOS R7 speed machine T he Canon EOS R7 is the first camera you will reach for if you want the advantages of APS-C combined with pro-level speed and intelligent AF, with big-time image resolution. It’s a fantastic addition to the EOS R ecosystem and a worthy successor to the 90D and 7D lines, making the R7 a great proposition for wildlife and sports enthusiasts, and anyone wanting to get the most out photography. Whole Area AF makes the most of the R7’s 651 AF zones, so it’s PROS: 32.5MP sensor • Up to 30fps bursts • 7K oversampling • In-Body Image Stabilizer incredibly easy to lock focus on subjects anywhere in the frame CONS: Not the biggest buffer • Unique control wheel 88 www.digitalcameraworld.com

A super-telephoto lens can get you there, and a zoom beats a prime for flexibility when your movements are limited. That’s especially true if you’re confined to a hide for shooting wildlife or in a spectators’ area at a sporting event. A super-telephoto zoom can also come in handy for shooting candid portraits at events, so you can be unobtrusive and pick people out from a distance, while also blurring the background with a fairly tight depth of field. They can even give a creative alternative for landscape photography, giving a different look by compressing perspective. All in all, they’re extremely versatile pieces of kit. This type of lens is typically big, heavy and expensive, but it doesn’t have to be that way. Canon’s new RF 100-400mm for EOS R mirrorless is refreshingly lightweight and affordable, as are the competing Sigma and Tamron 100-400mm lenses, designed for DSLRs. And naturally, if you mount one of these on an APS-C format camera, you effectively boost the zoom range to a powerful 160-640mm. Let’s take a closer look at what all the leading contenders have to offer. The Canon Magazine 91
