EDITOR’S LETTER Claire Lloyd has been a member of the Homebuilding & Renovating team for 14 years. She’s currently in the midst of another renovation. IMAGE: ANDREW SYDENHAM Bringing the outside in with plentiful glazing has become a hallmark of the modern home, and rightly so — introducing natural light and views of the garden has never been so paramount. However, if on completion of a self-build or extension project those views resemble the aftermath of Glastonbury festival, it can rather spoil that feeling that you’ve finally crossed the finishing line. I admit, it’s a mistake I’ve made on my own projects; in a bid to get the house habitable, the garden is overlooked. While currently blessed with an established garden, I’m feeling the effects of this during my latest renovation — the recent wet, warm weather has seen an explosion of weeds, overgrown borders and untended beds. (I’m taking comfort in the fact that I’ve well and truly done my bit for the No Mow May campaign.) The lesson here is that considering the landscaping in conjunction with a building project can pay dividends. Over on page 64 we provide some great examples of self-build, renovation and extension projects which demonstrate the fruitful results of doing just that. New builds can perhaps benefit the most — a great landscaping scheme can help a new addition feel instantly established in its surroundings. (There are more garden design tips on page 104.) For those who want to capitalise on the connection between house and garden, turn to page 108 for our design masterclass to creating a sunroom and page 135 for our ultimate guide to patio doors. Finally, giving the concept of being green fingered a new meaning, we’ve put together 10 ideas for creating a more sustainable garden (page 169). Enjoy the issue. Jess Ralston, ECIU analyst, said: “If we want to increase security of supply and reduce bills at the same time, the only answer is to use less gas. That means insulation. And luckily, Sarah loved the house design that had already been submitted by architect Roger Abbot, since retired. FINE-TUNING THE DESIGN The approved proposal was for a contemporary house built into the hillside, clad in cedar boards to harmonise with surrounding woodland. “The plan was for the ground floor to be tucked in below the existing ground level, so the house wouldn’t be too tall.
